My best advice is to not get caught up in arguments and do experiments yourself. Give up music for a month of two (Ramadan is the best time for this practice) and see what changes it brings. If there are no changes then music isn't a test for you. But if giving up music makes you more focused in prayer, more attentive to your surroundings, improves your social interaction, makes you more productive (as is the case with me) then there is your answer. May Allah give us power over our nafs and desires ameen.

This is mentioned in poor man's help book by Hamza yucef, in the first episode, when he mentions if you hear different opinions about a matter and you get cought up in a web of contradicting opinions, question your heart because it will lead you to what's right if it's a sound heart!

@star bebe I get where you went with this but it may not be the best advice. Of course self understanding is great but if there are arguments for something or against it by great scholars such as in this case Al Ghazali, then it is of course beneficial to take them into consideration rather than trusting your own judgement without scholarly opinion.

    • @thechoice301

@@i_am_that_sink absolutely. I am no one to question opinion of the most esteemed scholars of our tradition. The only reason I went the personal experimental way with this is because there is such a great debate on this matter even among the most reputed scholars that to me it seemed like something that depends from person to person, hence this experiment. Allah knows best!!

I walked into a gas station yesterday. I was wearing a kufi. Got some coolant for my van. The boy working the register was a Muslim Arab. I know he was Muslim only because I've seen his father in the Masjid for Juma. If I were to assume based on his clothing I wouldn't assume he was Muslim.
He had rap music playing in the gas station. Modern rap music about drugs and women. He did not show any signs of shame when he saw that I was Muslim, he did not turn the music down and he did not even give me Salaam.
Music is a part of Western culture that isn't going away. The reason thre youth go astray with music is not because the music leads them astray. It's because the Muslims push them away when they listen to music. They gravitate towards people who allow them to be themselves. They gravitate towards people who understand the music the way they do. They want to discuss how the music makes them feel not debate whether it's haram or not. When the only discourse within the Muslim community becomes Halal vs Haram they start to spend time with less and less practicing Muslims until eventually they're spending their time with non Muslims and that association with nonbelievers is when they start to become like the nonbelievers who do the things the music promotes. I know so many converts who are from the West and grew up with music and no Islam who gave up Music for Islam and I know even more Muslim youth who were born Muslim and gave up practicing for the lifestyles portrayed in the music.
There is music out there that can bring you closer to Allah but it's blocked off by a wall of condemnation and judgement so Muslim youth don't listen to Muslim musicians. Their non Muslim friends will think it's lame and the Muslims at the masjid will shun them and look down on them. So they stick to the worst music available so they can at least feel welcome among their peers.

My advice is to look at the life of Prophet Muhammad pbuh. Have you seen any incident where he adviced people to get close to Allah by "sa'ma". The only way to get closed to Allah is by Ibaadah. So, in our short life do what is prescribed to us by Allah and his prophet in order to achieve success or "falah". Leave music, it definitely effects sha'waat (desires).

One needs historical training etc. If the hadith was about saying the flute was haram the prophet could just say STOP PLAYING IT ITS FROM SHAYTAN, but he did not. Also from the context of the hadith, it is suggeting the Prophet and Umar did not like the guy playing the flute, basically they though the guy was playing badly. Out of kindness they just coverd their ears and went away. Now i think that is very nice thing to do, not like some person out on the street people will shout abuse at them. Again we ahve to becarful here as we have no historical context etc etc.
