has that weirdly shaped Samick pickguard, same as the one on a 2005 Bullet that i own. (which i bought for cheap, solely for the nice rosewood fretboard neck) thanks for the tip about the 500k pots, that's what is making my Korean E9 sound so brash.
That is a nice Squier II , I gave one like it to one of my Grandsons , but it had Alnico V pups , I have two Squier II Strats - but " Made in India " and weren't plywood , thick solid wood body with a Humbucker in bridge ,the truss rod adjustment is at the body end or heal of the neck. only made two years and the bodies and necks are almost Fender USA quality, far better then the Mexican strats. The Made in India was on a sticker , no serial # either , which is in most cases - Bridge and tuners should be changed out . 30 year old plywood bodies resonate really well . My Korean is plywood , I put all Fender parts in it , tuners - Mexican fat tremolo bridge and Fender '59 pups , it's my favorite player. thanks for posting
I have one of these, it was my very first guitar (same color too). I got it for free with an amp from a friend who bought it new and barely played it, (on the condition that I play “Big Balls” by AC/DC) it basically just sat in a closet for twenty years until I got my hands on it. It’s still in perfect condition minus some chips on one of the horns, even has the sticker on the back in a readable condition.
@@wizrom3046 Took me like 2 years but yes I did. I learned a different AC/DC song really early on (I think it was You Shook Me All Night Long) and that seemed to satisfy him until I finally remembered to learn Big Balls (he’d get drunk and bug me about it every now and then but that was it).
I have the exact same guitar, serial S986xxx cool guitars, and the necks are amazing. I ended up swapping in a loaded Fender tex mex pick guard. Required very minor routing around the pots for it to fit. Still have all the original parts/electronics tho if I ever wanted to go back.

I picked up one of the 1987 Black Squier II in a Tigard, OR pawnshop for $160 about 3 years back. I think it sounds better than a regular Squier Affinity for sure.
Bought a Metallic Red E9, all busted up, for $50. Had to install a TusqXL nut, Fender inline Kluson tuners, touch up the paint (not easy), remold broken plastic tab on bridge p/u, find mid and neck p/u covers . . . new back pocket cover . . . lots of work. Great neck. Full sized trem block, bent saddles . . . 300K pots and .33cap . . . I heard about these Korean strats and thought I'd check this one out.
I have a contemporary squier 2 strat from Japan and dated it as an 89 according to the serial and it has had nearly every piece replaced with more expensive parts like a dimarzio in the bridge two fender single coils and fender tuners also has a killswitch and Dunlop strap locks on it, managed to get it for 230 from a friend. Needless to say he didn’t know what he had but I do and I’ll probably never get rid of it
I have an ‘89 MiK Olympian White strat with that sticker on the neck. I just recently wore the numbers away through regular playing, but it used to say the number that matched a number on the case it was sold in. Still have the case and the numbers matched, i have pictures of it somewhere on my phone
just got the s9 1989 in the uk this morning. first i didnt like the fact that its heavier than what normally starts wt.But, when i pluged it to my katana 50 mkii ex, boy, its a blasting excellent sounding guitar. the pickups are similar to my previous bullet 2017. one thing is why the body is made of a plywood? however as i said the sound and plays much better than fenders i played in stores. incredible guitar. even if i sold it would be for the bit heavier wt body. the whammy bar is full block., bridge is fender.
The plywood is the mid-grade stuff typically used for guitar amp speaker enclosures. My guess is that since Samick was making guitar amp speaker enclosures in the '80s, they may have had an overstock of that wood and put it to use for guitar body construction. Again, just a guess.
I have the same guitar. I bought it new in 1989. It's white and since I have long been out of the "playing in a band mode" It's perfect with no damage of any kind. I have played and looked at American Stat's, and really didn't seen any reason to change. mine sounds and plays just as well to me. If I want a different sound I will pick up my 2000 Les Paul Standard plus.
Middle pickup is out of phase, common for those 80's strats. That is why switch positions 2 and 4 sound like that "icepick" treble overload. You can reverse the wires to the middle pickup to fix it, or even put in a push/pull knob switch to select between in phase and out of phase. 🙂👍
I told my wife a couple weeks ago (as I was complimenting her) 😊 that if something is perfect than by default and therefore definition something measurably different can't be. You've come full circle to the specs and sounds and feel of that guitar which is perfect for you. (1) 12 inch radius (2) .008 gauge strings (3) ratty- nasally sound. Makes me think of a '60s guitar sound (4) linear volume pot, which I thought actually fattened up the sound when you rolled it down.
..I wouldn't change a thing on that. ..more sound options with the factory potentiometers. Those pickups sound really good to my ears and remember Dan Electro's were plywood Masonite Cheapo's that somehow sounded awesome. 😎. Looks shop store window new. Minty. Nice score.
They are fantastic guitars 🎸 necks are amazing on them I had one must of been best Strat neck I ever played and sounded so good plywood body is real good tone wood. Too many myths about laminate plywood nothing wrong with samick made guitars you are correct the E9 ones are killer necks too I love the E series Korean Squier bullet guitars amazing necks smaller bodies very comfortable to play that’s my thing. I have a red one E7 serial number on the neck plate due for a re fret soon later on but might be buying another one in red E9 the serial number also on the neck plate no fender stamped saddles so slightly different and neck looks wider.
I have this guitar. It was my first guitar (back in the early 90’s). It has oxidized (rough) frets and needs upgrades all around. What locking/non-locking tuners and other suggestions do you have for improving/fixing the guitar? Just like you, I loved playing it…buttery smooth to play.
I have one squier ii red, and just upgrade pickup with seymour duncan antiquity.. sounds better than any fender, i really loved it and never sell this beauty red.. amazing
@@joshcheaney7322 I have the white "E9" serial # from 1989, and it also has full size body. Not sure where the misconception comes from but is somewhat widespread that MIK bodies were thinner. Maybe the straight E series bullet Strats described above?

Nothing wrong w plywood, but the Indian version was solid maple ;) sleeper
Mine has tha serial number in a sticker, but what would the use fornit be though. Great comment, thanks

I got the white/maple E9 serial # from 1989. Over a decade ago. Such an awesome guitar. A definite keeper. Thanks for posting more info about them.

What pick ups did you install in your original red Squier 2 Korean 89?

hi man, can you please tell me what tuning keys you would use to replace the cheapos? Been looking a while. thanks
I had a butterscotch Squier Tele in 1987. 35 years L8r, I see one for sale at £2,050.
I have one squier ii red, and just upgrade pickup with seymour duncan antiquity.. sounds better than any fender, i really loved it and never sell this beauty red.. amazing
Tuners on mine were fine. Still replaced them with kluson f styles
Did you replace the tuners yet? Curious if you found replacements.
..what about weight and neck dimensions, you didn't mention.. and what's the difference bet the Korean silver label neck and the gold neck?
Silver label neck is plywood and gold label is the pro tone body made of alder or ash
I used to own a Squier myself
1989 squire strat Is a vintage Guitar? Oh my God.....
..is the body on that thinner?
Shouldn’t be. These old made in Korea Squiers are usually all full thickness. I know mine is 👍
