    OCD? What's OCD about doing a thorough restoration of something you want to preserve? It's not only functional, but therapeutic ;-)

      I'm heading out this morning to pick up a 1941 version 9A in similar condition. Your video is a true inspiration. Revealing the beauty, history and talent under those layers pays the utmost respect and resurrection to those that built the modern world we live in today. You've set the bar pretty high. I'll try my best. Much thanks.

    SB 9 was my 1st lathe. I bought a model C and have been converting it to an A, but I can't find what gears to use to make the gearbox ratio correct for the thread pitches. Was hoping to see the tooth counts on yours, but I might as well ask if you can tell me...great video. I had to clean and paint mine too, but now it looks and works like new!

    Awesome!!! I just sold my South Bend 13" (but kept the taper attachment) to get a 16" with riser blocks. Currently tearing it down also. I thought the taper would be compatible with the 16 but, it's not. Either way good luck on the new restore. It's definitely not an easy task, a lot of elbow grease is involved.

    PART 1
    "Aside from learning the theory and practice, there is a third factor necessary to becoming a master in any art-the mastery of the art must be a matter of ultimate concern; there must be nothing else in the world more important than the art. This holds true for music, for medicine, for carpentry, (machining)-and for love. And, maybe, here lies the answer to the question of why people in our culture try so rarely to learn this art, in spite of their obvious failures:

    I personally would had left it as it was if it was in good mechanical condition; I would had had the ways reground and gone through the gearboxes, and that's about it.

      Well, that's a matter of personal taste. To me, that lathe looked horrific with the metallic blue/gray paint. And one of the aspects to my hobby is restoring to (as close to) factory as possible. As for the ways, look at them in the final pictures - they're pristine with nearly all the scraping in tact. Thanks for watching.

    Beautiful restoration. It almost seems a shame to actually use it to cut metal after all this work. (But I don't really mean that - a lathe is born to cut metal and denying it would be the real shame.)
    I've had two SB9s: an early '40s with a brass plate asserting that it was subject to the War Materiels Board, and another plate assigning it to the Auburn Clutch Co. It was in very bad shape. The saddle had worn down so far that the ways had cut into the mounting holes for the oil wiper covers. The ways were visibly "sway-backed". Still, it gave me usable service until my father passed, and I inherited the second SB9 in my life.
    My father got it new in the mid-60s, and it has had only light use in the intervening 50 years. To be sure, my father used it mostly as a wood turning lathe for the last ten years he had it, so it was fairly packed with oily sawdust. The paint is still factory fresh for the most part, with very few dings. Some of the bright metal is now lightly "browned", but there is no pitting anywhere. I'm about to convert it to 1 hp 3-phase with a programmable VFD to get braking and reversing on the fly (without spinning the chuck off).
    I have a question about the serpentine belt. Doesn't that require a complete disassembly of the headstock and the jackshaft when it needs replacement? I've always used leather with skived/glued joints. (I can't stand the "slap" that a Clipper joint makes twice on every revolution.)
    I've just subscribed to your channel, so don't be surprised to find comments popping up on your older videos (like this one). They generally aren't meant to be critical, but just musing on how I might have approached some particular problem, and thinking "out loud" about it. I am prone to stopping videos and commenting while an idea is fresh, only to discover that my question is covered later in the video.
    I've begun posting a few videos of my own so, if you feel inclined, take a look. The best so far is the start of a series on replacing the CRT display in an older Anilam Crusader M (on a SuperMax mill) with a modern LCD display.

      Peter W. Meek Pete - thanks for those nice words, I sure do appreciate that. You're lucky to have one of those War Babies. Mine was a 46, so from that "era" but not from the war. My Heavy-10 was a 42, so right smack in the middle. My goal is get another 9 - but only if it's a war baby.
      You're gonna need to pull that spindle and counter-drive . Greg Haligan has a nice video on this:
      ua-cam.com/video/U1agcVkQ63U/v-deo.html
      But it's really easy - provided there's not a lot of rust and all the parts cooperate nicely.
      - Good luck!

    I would have taken advantage of the space underneath the stand with a full cabinet rather than a single drawer. Something like three drawers and a few shelves with a cabinet door. Far more practical.

    • @BasementShopGuy
      @BasementShopGuy  9 років тому +1

      John Tee Hi John - That lathe is long gone, by 2 years. The lathe came with that cabinet when I bought it. I have plenty of roll-away space to store tooling in, located close by to the machine anyway. It's funny, I actually removed the cabinet shortly after this was filmed. It obstructed the original look of the machine.

    A proper job there. Not just a strip and paint. How common are the taper attachments in the US? I think both your machines had them on? I've only seen one come up for sale on fleabay in the last year in the UK, and that was with a lathe. I'm guessing that if a draw bar and collets regularly fetch $225, then a taper attachment is going to be $450-500 in the UK. How would that compare with US prices?
    Anyway excellent job, and thanks for posting.

    • @markrainford1219
      @markrainford1219 9 років тому +1

      Ok, just been on Boxford spares website. To make a taper attachment from spare parts would cost an equivalent of $920! Methinks i'll be making one from precision linear bearings and titanium shaft and still save hundreds. lol.

    • @BasementShopGuy
      @BasementShopGuy  9 років тому +1

      mark rainford Not sure - tapers can be tricky. Some feel that they're a waste and (never) get used, others love em' and wouldn't have a machine without them. I've never had a "need" for mine, but that doesn't mean I won't. I'm looking for some projects to make, that uses the taper. I'll be shooting a video on that in the coming weeks. Thanks for watching!

    Hi Brad,
    I'm looking into buying a 1943 South Bend 9A lathe.
    Can you give me any advise as to what issues to look for?
    Are there shim's under the headstock for alignment with the tailstock?
    Any advise you could give me would be great.

    • @BasementShopGuy
      @BasementShopGuy  8 років тому +1

      Look for worn ways (worn "ridge"), slop in the leadscrew keyway, slop in the hand wheel. Hope that helps. Also look for videos on "hot to buy a lathe"

  • @crookedriver2079
    @crookedriver2079 8 років тому

    Did the ways on 40's & 50's SB 9's come with hand scraped ways? I don't see any scrape marks on my 1956 9A, even though the original owner (1 owner lathe) was a Model Engineer who made model engines, presumably with not a lot of wear on it.

    • @BasementShopGuy

      Scraping was on all ways for South Bends. The non-hardened ways, loose their scraping really fast tho.

    Fantastic job brad, in order to achieve the finish that you did, how many coats of paint were applied, how long did you wait between each coat, thanks for your time

      Honestly just one coat. Using a small brush really laid it on thick. I have a video (scroll WAY back) and I show the brush, etc. glad you enjoyed it!

    What do you do to make the pieces so clean and shiny? Make a video showing your technique, because I bought a lathe of this one and would like to reform it.
    I'll wait for the video, okay?

      Go WAY back to the beginning of my videos, I absolutely have a video showing the polishing of ball-cranks.

    Again a beauty!!Like the others..just AMAZING! How long did you need to compleet i?.Its hard to tell in the clip.But I can only imagine how much it was,as you dont miss even the smalest srew.I know,time is not a issue if you start this job,but I am just interrested in the time frame of the rebuild.
    Keep it up!!
    I rebuild old model engines,and know,the the endresult is the sweet reward,no mather the setbacks..Some peopel dont understand,that I spend houers with one smal part.
    Regards,Peter

    How do you restore worn spindles, axes, bearings, gears and ways? Every lathe restoration on youtube is mostly a cleanup and paint job.

      I typically only buy machines that are mechanically sound, as in this case. Or, try to source NOS parts.

    Good looking machine. I look forward to the rest of the series. Just finished watching you're new lathe from PM - good job. What paint did you go with on this project? I been going back and forth on what to use on a Bridgeport milling restoration I am working. (sorry I did not search all these comments as you probably been ask this before. Music makes feel like I am watching the Band of Brothers.
