I would say he was a 90s college basketball legend IMO. He had that laid back cool style of play ,he kinda reminded me of an even older player named Johnny Dawkins from the 80s spurs and Sixers.
This was my favorite player. I wore the high socks like him. He was my idol. Like him i wasn't the most explosive athlete. I couldn't jump high, run fast, but I had body control dexterity and smarts. MOTEN just FOUND a way to score. He just maximized all that he could. He was my HERO.
I agree. His style was for the 80s..very smooth player. Buckets when the Big East was real...salute for this one.. another one might be..Terrance Morris Maryland
Thank you for making these videos. You're opening a window into a period of basketball where a lot of players were hindered by the structure of the game at the time. I'm guessing a lot of younger fans are having light shed on forgotten players. It's really wild to think about how many players would have been successful if the game shifted twenty five years earlier. Thanks for this post and all of the others. Do Kerry Kittles!!!
Every player on my 14 and under team wanted number 21 with long socks and put up numbers from the wing like Smooth is what we called him he's a D.C. basketball God 💯your the man for this one JC 💯
Met him at the mall in Syracuse when he was in college when he was primetime. Wow back then I wouldn't have never thought he would be featured on stunted growth.
@Stunted Growth, Lawrence Moten is definitely a Legend in my book. My favorite college player all time. He is the reason I signed with Syracuse. Much love for Moten and the Cuse. I love your channel, keep up the good work. You really dig deep in the basketball history corners.✌🏽
I've been waiting for months to see this video. I got into college basketball heavy in the mid 90's and Moten was one of the players that stood out to me super early. Along with Corliss Williamson, the O'Bannon brothers, Marcus Camby and Tim Duncan. So many great players in that era and Moten was a problem in Syracuse. Thank you Stunted Growth for this video 🙏🏾🙏🏾
The early to mid 90s.... it was a good time for the college ball. Being from D.C. , the history always intrigued me. I love where I'm from. Just learning how to take the bitter with the sweet, learning about folks experiences. U never know what really goes on behind closed doors. Thank you for this insight. Love peace and respect.
THANK YOU FOR THIS!!! This has always been the number one player I wanted to see an episode of and wondered what happened. He's nostalgia for my teens, he was an effortless silky smooth scorer, really a legend. Thanks!
Yo he's my favorite college Hooper of all time. Just bought his jersey again few weeks ago. Had the smoothes Jumper ever never in a rush with his slow motion silky Jumper.
Moreno actually had really good ball handling skills however often is the case Where you are drafted has alot to do with your success. Had he got pick on much better team he could have very easy fill a 6 man position
He was such the average of the type player they went for back then , I thought he would have held on to the back of some team's bench for atleast 9 or 10 yrs though.
Update: He coached the two older Lawson brothers (K.J. and Dedric) to a state title as seniors, and is currently the head man at Philander Smith College in Little Rock.
This was dope. He's slightly before my time but I remember watching a few games of his on ESPN Classic. Very unique skillset. Also, would you consider doing Sean Williams from Boston College? He was a record breaking shot blocker but never panned out in the pros for some reason
🔥 Well worth the wait thank you for this one as a kid i remember watching him cook always wanted to know why he didn't blow at the next lvl hell of a video 🔥 🔥 🔥
J.C. Stunted Growth big time salute for making my request a reality. 100% agree with your statement. As a east coast guy who’s lil brother was a huge SU fan I remember trying to explain to him why his favorite player was not getting run in the pros. I use to say he needed to be super wet with the J at the next level or he would struggle cause he had like a 1982 type of game in 1997. His game was more suited for a 6’8/6’9 ball player (James Worthy type). Still you have no idea how smooth the brother was unless you watched those games man. It was effortlessly for him. Much love and respect and keep up the great work.
I've always had a vibe that he wasn't going to make any noise in the NBA. I thought he would had atleast average 10 ppg but the NBA isn't meant for every college standout though
Moten is one of my all time fav players!! I remember playing 7th grade basketball wearing high socks just to be like him... Hahahaha. Good times! Straight DAWG at the 'Cuse!!!!
I played D3 in New Jersey the same years Moten was at Syracuse. We played summer league together (not on the same team) in 93 and 94. Moten dominated with his fundamentals and ability to get to the line and just put the ball in the hole. He was on another level. Great times I will never forget.
Easily my favourite Cuse player ever. Still blows my mind that he ended up as the Big East career scoring leader but never won a scoring title. I mean, how do you do that?
This was a decent piece you did on Sam. Did you know that his real sport was football, dude was Jerry Rice as a receiver and Ronnie Lott as a defensive back, but loved that roundball. One of the reasons he wasn't recruited that heavily was most scouts thought there was no way he wasn't going to play college football. His high school quarterback was Marvin Graves who was the QB at Syracuse while Sam was dropping numbers, but they could never convince him to put the pads on in college or Marvin Harrison would have trying to break his records!!! Keep doing what you are doing!!!
Dope video man. Loved Moten . One of my favorite Grizzlies . Watched him live in action back in the day . Loved the socks and his smoothness. Wasn't the fastest but smooth man .
Just came across this and absolutely love ! As a SU grad, this was much-needed. How about Adrian Red Autry? He was that great big guard who could do it all.
my friend had sent me a recent interview with Richard Dumas (from the Suns in the early-mid 90s) on Vlad TV. Can you do a vid on him? i know we all know he was hooked on drugs, but i thought he was gonna be the next superstar after his performance in 93, specifically the NBA Finals that year
Definitely agree. Moten could have been a star in the 70’s and mid 80’s. I totally forgot about him until now. I remember watching him play and I always felt he was out of place in the NBA at that time.
I’m from the Huntington, Wv area. So, I’d love to see a stunted growth episode on Tamar Slay, who was a former Marshall University great. He was drafted into the NBA, but never quite reached his peak. Maybe you can make a video, and summarize why? Thanks!
Dope video man did you ever do a video on Paul Mcpherson from Chicago and KERRY Kittles too he got drafted before Kobe that should be considered a stunted growth right.
I remember watching Lawrence Moton play in the Urban Coalition summer league in DC right after he graduated. Kenny Anderson and Allen Iverson were also playing. Moton had 25 pts and about 8 rebounds and was just being mercilessly tainted by the crowd for scoring like a white guy with 16-18 fly jump shots from the corner
Man o man, absolutely LOVED his game!! I don’t understand how these college superstars go to these expansion teams and wind up on Stunted Growth (Lets get it man) videos????? I remember Walt (Wizard) Williams who came out of Maryland drafted by the Sacramento Kings. He was a big guard, with average scoring ability, a good passer and a below average defender. He would of done well playing for a playoff team early in his career but like Lawrence Moten, he played for a terrible team in which he didn’t have the talent to carry. I guess my point is that NO PLAYER has the talent to carry teams without help.
Wore 21, high socks, and my nickname was him in highschool lol wore the socks in college too.... Even tried to play at Syracuse right after him...... Ended up at Arkansas. Didn't realize that high socks make you look slower though..... Learned that later in life.... But that was my guy
i guessed your third stunted growth before you even said it. You can see that his game was more geared towards the 70s style of bball. Game just didnt translate to the 90s. Good video.

I think he would be great in this era too with a good jump shot. There are a lot of dudes who are slower without an amazing first step but with size and craftiness they get by.

Lawrence Moten reminded me so much of Quincy Douby, except , without the range that Douby had (Quincy Douby another "Stunted Growth" profilee).
