Are Two Heads Better than One? | Light Tank M2A2/A3

- Even with their twin turret layouts and machine gun armament of only machine guns, the M2A2 and M2A3 reflected a persistent effort by the US Army to modernize its armored force.
Despite being outdated by the outbreak of World War 2, the M2A2 and M2A3 tanks provided excellent chassis and components for future tanks. By using them, American combined arms doctrine was modernized, and tank crews were trained for overseas service. As the US Army worked towards developing an effective tank, the M2A2 and M2A3 tanks were useful stepping stones.

I will say that, in War Thunder, the M2A2 is an underrated low-tier tank. It's a great early game tank that you can use to rush the objectives thanks to its high top speed and small size. It may only have machine guns for its weapons but when equipped with strictly armor-piercing rounds, it can prove devastating against other light tanks. I find it's best used as a hit-and-run harasser. The biggest problem aside from its low caliber weapon, is that its largest caliber weapon has a very limited firing arc so if an enemy comes up on the wrong side, you need to be able to maneuver and turn quickly to avoid getting taken out. It's got a good safe place in my Tier 1 US Loadout because of this.
M2A4 was a seal clubber in low tier WoT.
and a pretty decent anti air
Sure but vehicles in WT and their performance isn't representative how it's like in real life
@@axeavier fully aware of that. Just saying that it’s a fun tank to use in a video game.
@@WildBillCox13 a seal clubber?
Training tank was the best use. Next best use would be as an indirect fire weapon carrier. M3 75mm howitzer carrier was already an existing design. Maybe make it an open top design like the m37 to reduce cost and potentially increase ammo capacity.
It's not noteworthy that in 1932 all the Us Army's tanks were either of WW1 vintage or some non-serious design. That was true of almost every army in the world at that time.
Contextually I think it was necessary to give an idea about what was being fielded by the US at the time prior to the 1940's. He should have rephrased that point though, since what you say is correct
i'll be honest sometimes I don't check in because I'm not usually a fan of the narration, but whoever this is, they did an amazing job, and if it's one of those robot voices, it's almost indistinguishable from just a really good narrator
That would be me! Thank you!
I wonder if a turretless machine gun armed m2a3 would have made a good recce vehicle
Unlikely to be honest. Sometimes Recce units have to engage enemy recce units. The recce unit that doesn't have a cannon of any sort is going to get slaughtered. This is why you see the big move toward autocannons that lasts well into the modern day.
The British used turretless M3 & M5 tanks for artillery observation post, in Italy, during WW2.
@@wolfehoffmann2697or the new self-propelled gub of the US army ( or light tank as also known) where ita gonna support recon and light infantry, it has a 105mm cannon.
I also made a Video on this tank but wow you guys just do it so much better, great video as always!
Based thumbnail.
The M2A2 makes a decent Anti Aircraft vehicle in War Thunder.
Loved to use this tank in Heroes and Generals!
Thats a lot of different numbers and letters to keep track off wouldn't you agree 🤔😉
With its extravagance of machine guns, the M2 "Mae West" looks like to perfect AFV for dealing with a Zombie apocalypse.
Ah the heros and generals special the m2a2
I miss when heroes and generals was good and had new content
Yeah hopefully part 2 will be good when it comes out in a few years
Excellent, data dense, content. Thanks for posting.
Glad you enjoyed it! Be sure to check out the article for even more in depth info!
Excellent video guys!
Standardization versus need. Dropped idler, single turret with dedicated gunner, were moves in the right direction. Commander in a one man turret is wrong. Especially in a scout tank, where the commander's job is to establish and maintain situational awareness, which he can't do while manning a gun. Ask Ex General de Gaulle. He knew.
*BREAST-TACULAR* !
The monoboob reigns supreme
Pool had 12 "confirmed" tank kills. What made up the rest of his claims were not tanks, some may not have been AFVs, and the bulk of his claims are unconfirmed. A serious historian should take up this research and compare his claims to the records of German units. As in the air, overclaiming was a real thing. He should get credit for what he actually did, which I'm sure was substantial, but likely hardly close to what was claimed.
It actually make sense to use two turrets in case of light infantry support vehicles as ambushes can be done from two sides at the same time. It was in fact original idea behind Russian Terminator, before it turn out into a joke. The main issue is that such vehicle itself is only moderately useful.
You're here too?! I see that severe russophobia hasn't subsided even slightly?
Nice overview
Great video and my favorite narrator!
Recoilless Rifle would have improved the tank's offensive capability.
The Dolly Parton tank.
Nah, that's latter and Soviet
It would have been useful in the Philippines.
Deploying weapon systems overseas always comes down to logistics. The many variants would need many sets of spare parts and transportation. With how hungry the Marines got on Guadalcanal, 7.5 tons of extra flour would have been a better choice than an extra M2.
I'm ashamed to admit that i clicked after seeing "booby tank". My inner 12 year old sense of humor showed itself lol.
Click bait successfull!
General Patton proves my point, it's not the tank, it's the tactic!
_(With the right tactics a Panzer VI could win over a modern tank, in duell or at platoon level)_
A Tiger would have a hard time scratching the paint of a modern MBT.
@@executivedirector7467 cats can both scratch behind the ear and lick it's butt.
@@executivedirector7467 you forgot modern tanks like their ww2 burthen, are weak on the sides.
@@merafirewing6591 I forgot nothing. Modern tanks are vastly better protected than WW2 tanks, and a modern crew would need to be asleep to allow any WW2 tank within firing range.
:)👍
Training tank for sure.. Deploying it like a Bradley would not have been a successful option. Under powered and under gunned
The tank would have been used as range targets by the Axis. Not a good tank.
The Pz I was also "not a good tank" but it was instrumental in burying France in a matter of weeks.
