The Luftwaffe's first appearance over Malta happened on 16th January 1941 when they attacked the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious which was undergoing repairs at Malta's dry docks. This attack changed the way the Maltese looked at the war. The attack is known as the Illustrious blitz. The cities round the harbour suffered incredible damage especially Senglea which was heavily hit being right next to the dockyard.

What saved Malta actually was a battle being waged thousands of miles away: The battle of Stalingrad. The Germans thought they would achieve a fast victory against the Soviet Union in Stalingrad. Instead in August they were still encountering staunch resistance from the Soviet army entrenched within the city buildings, with fierce battles raging for every building in the battered city. Hitler was getting impatient. He decided to settle the issue fast by calling in the Luftwaffe to level the city of Stalingrad into submission. So he decided to dump the plan to invade Malta and took the bulk of the aircraft which were bombing Malta from Sicily and sent them to the Stalingrad front, for the great relief of the Maltese people. A move that would prove futile as the Soviets would eventually launch a counter offensive in November 1942 encircling the whole Nazi German 6th Army headed by Paulus who surrendered to the Soviet forces in February 1943, which marked the turning point of the war and the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany and Adolph Hitler.
