Clark Gable didn't think he was Rhett but the audience disagreed ...Clark was born to play Rhett Butler and Vivian was born to play Scarlett O Hara. I love Gone with the Wind.

I heard Margaret Mitchell did pattern Rhett after Gable. And Vivien was astonishing as Scarlett. She atnd the character became one on-screen.
They were apparently very similar in real life, too. Inspired casting, great film.

Reading it, I desperately needed to see it and when I watched it I was blown away. Beautiful film and now I have an obsession with old hollywood, clark gable and vivien leigh. Brilliant actors, brilliant film, brilliant book. I adore it :) I like to think viv and clark didn't hate each other :) he got along with most co stars, he was a nice guy :)
@kerry OMG I was the same. I read the novel and I was dying to know what happened to them in the end (when I was reading the book) and I couldn’t wait to finish the book so that i could finally watch the film.
I don’t think I’ll ever come across another book like this and I don’t think I’ll ever come across another film like this. They’re both masterpieces so no wonder the book was a best seller and no wonder this movie has the highest box office ever (and no other film will ever beat it because there will be no other film like this).
I also don’t understand the backlash of this movie! People should watch it before they make any judgement on it!
And I also have an obsession with the golden ages of Hollywood!
The truth is that they didn't hate each other, proof of that is the photo where Clark visits Vivien on the set of Waterloo Bridge. that's the truth they were good friends

Yes,it was true that Clark Gable(1901-1960)at first did not want to play the role of Rhett Butler in the Civil War epic "Gone With The Wind" as it was too challenging for him.He would have preferred the role of Rhett to be played by Gary Cooper.It was finally agreed that Gable should be the first choice.
As for Vivien Leigh before she was chosen to play the role of the spoilt,vivacious and eye roving Southern Belle Scarlett O Hara many had vyied for the role.Tatullah Bankhead,Miriam Hopkins,Bette Davis and believe it or not,Lucille Ball.
But Olivier Selznick finally revealed who was the actress chosen to play Scarlett.It was the India born Vivien Leigh.The rest is history.
Yes,there were rumours that Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh did not get along well but then it was heresay.Yes,Vivien Leigh did complain about Gable's false teeth but that was that.
The pair hit it off and Vivien Leigh won the Oscar for best actress but Gable lost the Oscar to Robert Donat's "Goodbye Mr.Chips".
Even today,both Gable and Vivien Leigh are held in high esteem and forever be remembered for being the blockade runner and the vivacious spoilt Southern Belle.

When Clark Gable asked Vivien Lee to kiss him and there was a close up, I remember saying to myself "Oh my God". I thought and still do they were simply unreal - such beauty. When Olivia DeHaviland passes away it will be a sad day for me. She is the only major cast member still with us.

I know it: it was in 1950, when Vivien returned to Hollywood to do STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE- A party was given to her & of course every member from GWTW was invited- Vivien was very close to Gable when Carole Lombard died- I have a lot of nice stories between the two of them- Real pros !!-

Thank you so very much for this! I love the behind the scenes clips, many of which I haven't seen before. I'm sure Clark and Vivien got along well, even though he liked to make mischief on set with his leading ladies sometimes by eating garlic before kissing scenes or treating some as if he didn't want to kiss them at all (like with Jeanette MacDonald in 'San Francisco'). Vivien did have a problem with director Victor Fleming, whom she saw as a man's director. Fleming replaced George Cukor, whom Vivien preferred because he was more a woman's director.
the king of actors and the queen of motion pictures the music theme of gone with the wind was just perfect for that era and movie wow what a punch it delivered the three could not be beat
selznick may not have realized how strong the story and these two actors to deliver the main part of the movie just blew the movie out of the water like no other of that time over 4 hours long when i first was watching it for the first time i never wanted it to end but to go on for at least the next fulll day. lol loved the entire cast right down to prissey lol also magnif and how bout that wonderful mammy, when i went home i ws all of 10 yeawrs old i told my mom i wanted to have a mammy in the house she chuckled and said ok ill tell u father lol. IMAGINE? THATS HOW MUCH THAT MOVIE IMPRESSED AND CAPTIVATED ME. bravo to the entire cast bravo

I have never seen this pictures before. Here we also see Margret Mitchell, the author who wrote the book and after that almost directly died in an accident. It feels like they live up again - and who knows, somewhere they also do so.
Loved the film. Gutted it ended Rhett leaving Scarlett without giving their marriage another chance since she finally realised she loved him.

One history about the first meeting:
It was a photoshoot and Vivien was 2 hours late because Selznick had given her a wrong address, an angry clark told the people on the set that even if she was the most beautiful woman in the world, s he would never be with her Vivien was entering at that moment and she listened, put hher hand on is shoulder and said mr gable I think the same, if it were you would tell vivien leigh to go back to england and fuck herself, the photographer told the story in books about the movie, and said that clark gable had been amazed by her beauty and that he confirmed that she was the most beautiful woman, everyone on the set agreed, then they met at a party before they started shooting and they were quite close on the set, olivia de havilland She said that they smoked together and that the two of them played boats between takes and invited her to join. He visited her when she was recording waterloo bridge, after the death of carole lombard she lwas there for him, every time they met they had a special greeting laughing at what the press said about them. when clark died vivien wrote a letter to his wife and sent her a silver rattle for the baby

Vivien Leigh was FAR more beautiful than Liz Taylor. Vivien’s features were a perfect mixture of soft, sharp and her features were proportionate, her face was the perfect combination of beautiful, striking AND cute. Whereas Liz‘s Face was not very proportionate, her features were too soft and she had a weak chin/jawline.

I love all of these pictures of the two lovely actors, especially those of the ones where they are between takes and in regular pedestrian clothes because they prove that they were indeed friends off the screen. They made such a handsome couple on screen with such chemistry, and they obviously had a deep admiration for one another that translated into real life. Their performances are forever immortalized in this greatest film of all time.

Has anyone ever asked Olivia De Havilland about the relationship between Gable and Leigh ? Did they really get along or what ?
They got along very well. Vivien was married to Laurence Olivier and Gable was with Carole Lombard. They were good friends by all accounts.
there's actually this documentary called "olivia de havilland remembers". There she talks about her past in hollywood and I remember her saying something about how clark and vivien would be playing battleship in between takes. so yeah I think they got along.

They were only togeather in one movie which was the aforementioned masterpiece gone with the wind they never worked togeather again. And gable did have frequent costars like Jean Harlow and Myrna Loy.

Rumor said once Gable deliberately ate garlic before the kissing scene being filmed with Leigh. You bet that the hatred in Leigh's eyes in some scenes were no acting. LOL.
he suffered from halitosis which gave him bad breath....those reactions on some scenes were real due to his bad breath. he had dentures which caused him problems. That's what i read

Hog wash...a sappy soap opera with the greatest hype for a movie at that time. Certainly, a woman's picture, but there is nothing wrong with that. LOL
