Insanity can not be washed away. Get 2 maybe 3 jobs and do whatever it takes to Not be homeless. When I see a hopeless approach for a handout I say "got any change?" Or a smoke. Can't means won't.
Absolutely 100%. When I visited Tokyo, one of the things I found fascinating was the fact that the vast majority of homeless, often living in underpasses and pedestrian tunnels, typically had their belongings packed neatly into 4 or 5 bags, usually with a neatly rolled umbrella sticking out of the corner of one bag, and a futon or bedroll also neatly rolled. Like their possessions were BEAUTIFULLY arranged. It is just that they were living on the streets. It is a cultural phenomenon.
Worrying about all the "feelings", Ted, is what got us here. The leadership is the problem, the leadership is the trash, the leadership needs an overhaul.
I grew up in PDX and moved away about 11 years ago. I am saddened and shocked to see my once beloved city in shambles. The government is completely to blame and they need to take responsibility for it. I am seeing the same thing up here in Seattle. Sad.

Our government needs to start cracking down on this, and I mean hard. Then again we have a government up here that is so far to the left that they can’t see their own noses in their own faces. That pendulum WILL swing back to the right, HARD.
How about putting out trash cans? You are aware that dumping garbage in a public business is punishable right? People take for granted the everyday conveniences that the homeless do not have. How about asking WHY we have so many homeless? It isn't their fault.
@@khernandez46 "It isn't their fault." Really? All homeless are there for no fault of their own? That's not correct. We've always had 'vagabonds' hobos, and those who prefer not to join the capitalist system and opt out. I have no problem with that but to say that all are there because of no fault of their own, is absurd. We have help for those who wish to make their lives better. And yes, more trash cans would be helpful. (btw, I've gone to homeless camps, and asked people who sit at the off ramp with 'help needed' signs, if they would like to do yard work for a day at $15/hr cash. Not one wanted to make any money. Try it sometime.) But I also recognize the high rent problem, which has contributed to people living off welfare services. A lot of that comes from high taxes (which is used to help support the homeless), and regulations that make property so expensive to own, and to build on. Even with the $Ms in subsidies. At some point, other people's money will run out.
It's totally unacceptable and yet the people of Portland seem to accept it. Meanwhile a restaurant owner who hands out an unauthorized plastic straw can expect a fine from the government.

I live in Troutdale, just east of Portland, and I never go into Portland anymore. If we want our city back it must start from the top down. I put most of the blame on the mayor and the city council. I mean the whole city council. We need leaders who have the courage to do what needs to be done. If we keep listening to the cry babies, Portland will end up making old Detroit look like Santa’s Village. It breaks my heart to see that beautiful city dying and the so called leaders just stand there ringing their hands.
And detroit is even cheaper for blue collar workers to live & for people to start a small business. Somehow, Portland's cost of living has continued to increase even though people & small businesses are abandoning the city in droves. Two years after this video I'm going to make the argument the city is slightly cleaner, but the homeless issue is worse. Drug use and addiction are also worse. Many businesses have been shuttered and left town as well. The building you see at 3:06 is now completely closed and boarded up, the whole thing, as it was little more than a fentanyl dispensary (no arrests were made. Fentanyl use is legal in Oregon). The city and county have also spent millions of dollars handing out money to NPO's to "aid" the homeless, which has proven to due little more than enable them, and exasperate the problem. The county has also used tax dollars to hand out free tents and free tarps to the homeless. If someone sees something I don't, I'm all ears.

The problems shown in the video are not new. Its been allowed to happen, by long term sick politicians and lax policies. Its been allowed by the many oddball residents that vote for these fools. The homelessness is chronic, they are basically invited to show up in Portland, at the taxpayers expense. I lived in the Pearl district. My vehicle had homeless break in and sleep in it. It stunk and so filthy I got rid of it. There were rats in a field near my apt that would get in the underground parking lot. If take Max to work at the airport. Every day bums wanting money. And destroying businesses in Portland has the effect of unemployment which means homelessness. Put it together folks.

@@khernandez46 "It isn't their fault." Really? All homeless are there for no fault of their own? That's not correct. We've always had 'vagabonds' hobos, and those who prefer not to join the capitalist system and opt out. The building you see at 3:06 is now completely closed and boarded up, the whole thing, as it was little more than a fentanyl dispensary (no arrests were made. Fentanyl use is legal in Oregon). Should West Virginia keep voting Republican? How about New Mexico? Where do those states rank for education, poverty and welfare? Hmmmmm
Step #1: Grow enough backbone to take strong, decisive action.

Because housing expenciev and Intel Niki employee homeless people.

I'm a garbage man who works in Portland metro area and I see a lot of this city and lived here my whole life and it is sad to see how this city has turned out its not because of covid its because of drugs most of the homeless people are or have a drug problem. if people really want to work they can most don't and the city should be ashamed of what it has turned out to be its gross and embarrassing not to mention that the homeless steal everything they can and if I took my travel trailer and parked it on a street it would be towed because it is nice and doesn't look like a homeless trailer but they can and it stays there for months without good tags or plates so glad that my tax dollars are paying for nothing . As long as Portland has homeless people the garbage will never end .stop giving out tents and giving them cell phones and every other hand out and maybe they will stop coming here from other states that actually care about their city and don't give in to the homeless
Then you know this isn't something new - it's exasperated due to the uncontrolled rioting. Six years ago I went to the local Greyhound bus stop to pick up the ex-wife of a retired Military neighbor. She spent a few days - went back. She was part of the "drug scene" - missed the "life" - has since passed away. Had a lot of stories to tell.
