When I visited Tokyo, one of the things I found fascinating was the fact that the vast majority of homeless, often living in underpasses and pedestrian tunnels, typically had their belongings packed neatly into 4 or 5 bags, usually with a neatly rolled umbrella sticking out of the corner of one bag, and a futon or bedroll also neatly rolled. Like their possessions were BEAUTIFULLY arranged. It is just that they were living on the streets. It is a cultural phenomenon.

I live in Troutdale, just east of Portland, and I never go into Portland anymore. If we want our city back it must start from the top down. I put most of the blame on the mayor and the city council. Did business there in 2012 from Australia. We where to stay there for 5 nights and left after 2. Junkies and there shit. Rental car broken into but i had taken everything out of it but still a hassle. The best was being assulted and they tried to rob us but being 230 pound ex rugby league player I was not having It and got one of them good one. Went to police with a good description and there reaction to us was a joke so we got out of there the next day. No surprise to me seeing what has gone on there. Did no more business there and didn't go back . Ohio was much better 2013.

I lived in the Portland metro area for 24 years and raised my family there. We loved everything about it. But I saw a real decline as the homeless situation got out of control with no viable plan to deal with it. Now the non-stop rioting has made it intolerable. When I was offered a job on the East Coast last October, I put my home on the market as fast as I could and left that city. I still have family in the area (Beaverton, Tigard, Salem) so I will return for brief visits.

I live in Cleveland, and we have almost 3 million people living in our Greater Metropolitan area. In my 41 years of existence I've never once seen a tent on a sidewalk here. Not even someone sleeping on a pallet or on some cardboard. I've seen a handful of tents in innacessible thickets hidden away next to railroad tracks and highway junctions in industrial areas. That's about it. We've had Democrat leadership my whole life and have significant minority populations that lily white Portland could only dream of having, and even still we'd NEVER allow this to happen here. When is Portland going to wake up? And Cleveland is the national joke somehow!

I lived in Portland for a number of years. I loved the area and the walkability of the area, all the transit. I rarely had to use my car. The beauty of the region was so appealing. I left in 2012. The problems shown in the video are not new. Its been allowed to happen, by long term sick politicians and lax policies. Its been allowed by the many oddball residents that vote for these fools. The homelessness is chronic, they are basically invited to show up in Portland, at the taxpayers expense. I lived in the Pearl district. My vehicle had homeless break in and sleep in it. It stunk and so filthy I got rid of it. There were rats in a field near my apt that would get in the underground parking lot. If take Max to work at the airport. Every day bums wanting money. Walking over needles and homeless to get to the Max station. The people of Portland didn't seem to care. I write letters to the mayor's office about why is this allowed to happen. That I'm paying all this income tax to be treated like this. That the homeless have rights and my taxes are being used to support them. I never got a reply. I decided ai had to leave and I did. I felt at some point Portland was going to collapse. It basically has. Its a disgrace now and should be taken over by the Govt.

I drove out there from Indianapolis with nothing more than what I could fit in my car, and driving into the city, I was really impressed and happy with what I saw, an absolutely beautiful place! I knew nothing of politics at the time, but on just the second night there in my motel room, I couldn't put my finger on it, but I just felt like this wasn't the place for me. Everything about it seemed great, yet... My third day there I packed up and drove to my second choice, Phoenix. In hindsight, I can only say it was God calling me out of there, as it was in Phoenix that I got saved, and his plan for my life turned out to be, and I am SO grateful!

They were so taken with the scenery, nice people, decent jobs, nice little two bedroom house with a garage, walking distance to mall 205. Give a 90 day notice in flyers, news, radio, what ever. If you don't pack up your camp it will be thrown away. In that 90 days setup either a community or shelter. After that 90 days any camps or trash is getting picked up and thrown away. Then every week keep hitting any campsite and keep tossing things away. They will get the message. Is it harsh, yeah it is. But if you got options for them then it's on them.

With the rent and mortgage moratoriums job losses are not a major contributor to homelessness...it's drugs, further decriminalization of same, lax law enforcement, and among the best benefits to be homeless nationally. When I visited Tokyo, one of the things I found fascinating was the fact that the vast majority of homeless, often living in underpasses and pedestrian tunnels, typically had their belongings packed neatly into 4 or 5 bags, usually with a neatly rolled umbrella sticking out of the corner of one bag, and a futon or bedroll also neatly rolled. Like their possessions were BEAUTIFULLY arranged. It is just that they were living on the streets. It is a cultural phenomenon.

Went to police with a good description and there reaction to us was a joke so we got out of there the next day. No surprise to me seeing what has gone on there. I lived in the Portland metro area for 24 years and raised my family there. We loved everything about it. But I saw a real decline as the homeless situation got out of control with no viable plan to deal with it. Now the non-stop rioting has made it intolerable. When I was offered a job on the East Coast last October, I put my home on the market as fast as I could and left that city. I still have family in the area (Beaverton, Tigard, Salem) so I will return for brief visits.

I live in Cleveland, and we have almost 3 million people living in our Greater Metropolitan area. In my 41 years of existence I've never once seen a tent on a sidewalk here. Not even someone sleeping on a pallet or on some cardboard. I've seen a handful of tents in innacessible thickets hidden away next to railroad tracks and highway junctions in industrial areas. That's about it. We've had Democrat leadership my whole life and have significant minority populations that lily white Portland could only dream of having, and even still we'd NEVER allow this to happen here. It's not at the beach, it's not at the mountain (yet somehow takes credit for both). It's on a filthy river that forces everyone to bottleneck over one bridge or another to get across town. I lived in Portland for a number of years. I loved the area and the walkability of the area, all the transit. I rarely had to use my car. The beauty of the region was so appealing. I left in 2012. The problems shown in the video are not new. Its been allowed to happen, by long term sick politicians and lax policies. Its been allowed by the many oddball residents that vote for these fools. The homelessness is chronic, they are basically invited to show up in Portland, at the taxpayers expense. I lived in the Pearl district. My vehicle had homeless break in and sleep in it. It stunk and so filthy I got rid of it. There were rats in a field near my apt that would get in the underground parking lot. If take Max to work at the airport. Every day bums wanting money. Walking over needles and homeless to get to the Max station. The people of Portland didn't seem to care. I write letters to the mayor's office about why is this allowed to happen. That I'm paying all this income tax to be treated like this. That the homeless have rights and my taxes are being used to support them. I never got a reply. I decided ai had to leave and I did. I felt at some point Portland was going to collapse. It basically has. Its a disgrace now and should be taken over by the Govt.

I drove out there from Indianapolis with nothing more than what I could fit in my car, and driving into the city, I was really impressed and happy with what I saw, an absolutely beautiful place! I knew nothing of politics at the time, but on just the second night there in my motel room, I couldn't put my finger on it, but I just felt like this wasn't the place for me. Everything about it seemed great, yet...
My third day there I packed up and drove to my second choice, Phoenix. In hindsight, I can only say it was God calling me out of there, as it was in Phoenix that I got saved, and his plan for my life turned out to be, and I am SO grateful!

After 28 years living in the beautiful Oregon, we have moved. I see no hope in clean-up while Oregonians vote in the same politicians. We lived in Lake Oswego (20 min. from Downtown) and the attitude was "oh it won't come here". It's a cancer it will spread. This was filmed in January, it's MUCH worse now.

They were so taken with the scenery, nice people, decent jobs, nice little two bedroom house with a garage, walking distance to mall 205. It's been 40 years since we left.

Give a 90 day notice in flyers, news, radio, what ever. If you don't pack up your camp it will be thrown away. In that 90 days setup either a community or shelter. After that 90 days any camps or trash is getting picked up and thrown away. Then every week keep hitting any campsite and keep tossing things away. They will get the message. Is it harsh, yeah it is. But if you got options for them then it's on them.
the options haven't been there. Cops threw away all thier belongings anyway. even important papers, etc. Then they had no shelter at all in cold wet weather. lots of homeless die on t he streets in portland from weather. PORTLAND IS HEARTLESS, and that is the real problem.

As you drive by homeless camps, you can spot the few that have some personal pride. There are tents that are tarped neatly and have no trash around them. They are at least trying their best.

With the rent and mortgage moratoriums job losses are not a major contributor to homelessness...it's drugs, further decriminalization of same, lax law enforcement, and among the best benefits to be homeless nationally. I'm a garbage man who works in Portland metro area and I see a lot of this city and lived here my whole life and it is sad to see how this city has turned out its not because of covid its because of drugs most of the homeless people are or have a drug problem. if people really want to work they can most don't and the city should be ashamed of what it has turned out to be its gross and embarrassing not to mention that the homeless steal everything they can and if I took my travel trailer and parked it on a street it would be towed because it is nice and doesn't look like a homeless trailer but they can and it stays there for months without good tags or plates so glad that my tax dollars are paying for nothing . She spent a few days - went back. She was part of the "drug scene" - missed the "life" - has since passed away. Had a lot of stories to tell. Sounded like more of an over the hill hippie commune than a homeless camp. It will be interesting to see who buys downtown!

Remember taking trips to Oregon and Portland in early 2000s. Still want to take a trip to see the Oregon coast, one of the most beautiful places in the world, but trying to plan how can fly in while avoiding Portland.
Luckily you only have to fly into the airport and then can drive right out on the interstate!

If we want to toss around political failings, there are plenty of legitimate gripes about both sides. I'm not a liberal. I'm a conservative and I'm a Portlander. Whether you're a Democrat, Republican, or a even Trump follower, you must see that when we fail to respond to radical elements (be they Antifa thugs, Proud Boy posers, or Q-Anon nutcases), the fabric of civilized society is damaged. What we need is not partisan gamesmanship and finger pointing, but real Americans standing firmly against radical and dangerous people on both sides of the political spectrum.
