About halfway through this I was waiting for him to bust out the cheese tasting phase.

The best chess players in the world still make mistakes all the time, such that they could never win against my cellphone. Why does a game need to be more complicated than that? At some point your strategy is so limited/unoptimized compared to the complexity of the game you may as well be playing randomly.
I mean hell they taught a neural network to play sushi-go and it was still owning the humans.

I think this game is really neat, but I think casual gamers might need some basics established from those previous two games before they'll be able to follow the rules of this one successfully. Still, I think the blending of push your luck and auction game is a great mix! There's enough variability that I think it'll hold up to repeated plays quite well.
Reminds me slightly of "phase 10" with the wild cards filling out runs
I just got done playing Axiom Verge for the first time and the glitched out thumbnail made me do a double take for a second

This just looks like Lost Cities: Rivals but with more rules? And even though LC:R isn't categorized as a push your luck, the fact that you need to claim cards in ascending order makes it really feel like one. Taking high values early can be very dangerous, since you go through the whole deck and never know when the lower cards are showing up, and those high values disqualify you from claiming them at all. So it's a balancing act.
Plus, it's a Reiner Knizia game, so it's gotta be great!

Not the only game where I spend the entire time sitting there trying not to bust

In case people are looking for a good push your luck card game, I highly recommend Port Royal. It's small, cheap, looks decent (at least it has artwork instead of just colours and numbers) and is easy to learn. It's so much fun, even with two players.
