the first Kenyan runner of international stature was in fact Seraphino Antao, a Kenyan of Goan (India) descent. Antao winner of Commonwealth Games gold medal, is now airbrushed out of this history. I saw Antao and Kip Keino run at Mombasa stadium.
Although he'll never admit it, Ryun probably regrets losing contact with Keino during the '68 Olympic 1500m race. Despite the altitude, he should have expected that Keino would push the pace, given that Keino had no chance of outkicking Ryun...
I suspect, culture, focus, interest, and hard work are more important than the altitude otherwise Colorado, Afghanistan, Northern India, Mexico, might be on top of the list.

I love the spirit of Kipchoge Keino against all odds
Jim Ryan was greatest miler in American History! A devout Christian that is a great role model.
Amen, brother !
@Jim Stark Well he was the greatest miler.

Frankly, it's body structure, culture, hard work, and then altitude.
Great piece on these two runners from different worlds who became outstanding runners.
Fantastic... yes, thank you so much for this
Loved watching Kip and such a gentleman.
Shows what training at altitude does for the distance runner.
My two favorite milers,
Jim Ryun has class. He was also a great father. Thanks Jim for your positive influence and fear of the Lord.
I learned alot today
Keino the marathon legend
Ryun ran a 4:06 mile as a sophomore, until recently the sophomore national record
God Bless Kip....but he could not come close to Ryun
Yeah, right. Are you forgetting the '68 Olympics?
Except when it mattered most...
Defies logic to say that since the Kip ran a great race and brat him.
