    As a mechanic who often engages in custom fabrication work but lacked the knowledge and experience of an experienced welder / fabricator these vids are awesome Matt! The quality of my fab' work has improved immensely thanks largely to you mate ! - Appreciated !!

    I like your videos, I'm learning to mig weld and am finding your videos very helpful. I watched your mig settings for dummies, and learnt from that how to set my welder up first before anything. I'm yet to do welds that look as good as your bad one, but the other one looks awesome!
    I hope with some practice, I can weld as good as that.
    Cheers mate, nice videos.

    You can weld with one hand, its just harder, sometimes it has to be done especially on awkward guards for machines that are too big to reposition quickly

    You worked the torch more on the first weld, which seems to be the difference in the weld profile.

      The bad weld will actually probably stand up to a lot of punishment even though it looks ugly and a little weak in places. Some welders I know lay down some ugly as hell welds but they always pass any testing and at the end of the day a ugly weld that's strong is much better than a pretty weld that's weak.

    I like the info your providing it makes sense, I build tailor chassis and we have to tac a lot before welding it does look a lot nicer grinding back the tac in your video but I've notice if I weld say a 4 inch weld and the tac is in the centre you can't see it at all no need to grind it back

    Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance. 👍👍👍
    Might sound like a joke but I had that drummed into me as a young bloke starting out and 35 years later I still find myself running thru that in my head. Especially when I don’t want to do the extra bit of prep I know I really should. Never regretted going the extra mile. Cheers 👍

    Loving these videos man! Would be good if in each video you put a small box saying the thickness of each material and the wire feed speed/voltage you use, like a "KEY" box they use in maths. I am a beginner and I think things like this would really help other people who practice from your videos. Thanks a lot and keep it up.

    I was talk to world by my father at the age of 8yrs, I have been a welder fabricator and production welder since the age of 16 school, in my career I hold welding codes, I've just watched your video with MIG welding, you do you not drag MIG welds you push so you can allow your weld to pool to give you the correct penetration, you drag stick welding to allow swag form correctly, your welds have signs of undercut, this will make your welds weaker in the middle.

    1- tight fit up.
    2- tack in a place you can weld straight over.
    3- Dry run to make sure you can make the whole pass.

      @@gordbaker896 so glad someone said that/ When the metal is thicker than your ability to penitent then you need to bevel and fill.. Yes? When I first started welding I did some on a crane for pile driving on a barge and my welds looked like shit on the outside but when they went to cut one of them to move for a different position, it was discovered that it was fully welded and very strong. In fact under load my uglies held up and the pretties broke like old bones. Ironically I used a 50 watt buzz box to weld a broken universal joint (cast iron which you cannot weld ..so they said) on a truck on a friends truck who loved to burn rubber. He tried to break it as a bet and never could. Ugly as all get out but solid as a rock.... Later I learned how to make it pretty with better heat and flattening techniques. No worries if you have good penetration and build the weld from the center of the metal out.. right??
      and didn't the first weld break? sue to no preheating and fast cool down.. from fast pass?? Please confirm my assessments. Thanks

    • @gordbaker896
      @gordbaker896 5 років тому

      @@colin-manyeates-clan5221 In North America, you need special Certification to weld on a Crane. My welds too may look ugly in places. I call them Gorilla Welds. Ugly but strong. Penetration is key. Your friends Universal Joint was Cast or forged Steel, not Cast Iron. Glad you are learning.

    Could someone achieve the good weld after a few attempts for the first time? I’m torn between buying a welder or paying someone to weld some roll cage, plate mounts in my VXR. I know it’s worlds apart from welding, but I’m a highly skilled joiner, very good with my hands.. How would I set the welder up to make it go as simple as that? I’ve never even looked at a welder! LOL.. Any advise would be massively appreciated. The car is a very very expensive build so needs to be near on perfect, I’m really tempted to do do it myself, as you made it look so easy! ok, so I'm a very inexperienced first time welder, I've MIG welded only like 3- 4 times, and I can easily weld over my tacks, and they look perfectly fine, the trick is to keep going, and plow through the tacks, don't stop at each tack, or at least connect the puddle to the tack, don't leave a gap! then it looks great! just don't add as much metal to the spot with the tack, and run over it quickly. alternatively, as I said, you can just run up to the tack, and connect the weld to the tack, so its all one weld.

  • @ivorbiggun4919
    @ivorbiggun4919 6 років тому +2

    You push the welding torch moving creating a swirl and on the second you kept it still
    Regardless of prep the welds would of looked better on the second one had you used the torch the same on the first one
    Even without cleaning down the spotwelds you can Passover them again and melt the down you stopped half way then started from the other end
    I’d like to see you do it again welding the same and I’m pretty sure it will be virtually the same

    Sorry to be rude again but I think this is important and one other comment confirmed. With thick metal one should cut a bevel to the center and only have thickness one can penetrate. In my experience with heavy load equipment, pretty welds that are not built up from the center tend to break. Ugly ones that were built up from the center hold under load. The outside 90 weld is a good example of full penetration and filling but for an inside corner it should be beveled to the thickness of penetration.. Yes...???

      Depending on the type of job you are doing if yiu need max penatration then push but if its for a gate or something on the line of that pulling is strong enough
