THANK YOU!!! Seriously. I think it's ridiculous that Canon doesn't make it so you can remove the cartridges whenever you want. There is such things as defective cartridges (in my case) or like someone else wrote, man error (putting the wrong cartridge in the wrong slot). I don't understand their logic and I never would have bought this printer if I had known, out of pure disdain for their lack of customer understanding. Thanks again, you saved my night!
I received this as a used printer. It wouldn't print very dark, so I went and got more ink. When it wouldn't let me replace the cartridge I ended up finding a way to clean the 'blocked nozzle' under Setup. It cleaned it about 8 times and reprinted. Each time a little darker and more stuff printing out.
I thought I had tried everything to remove a very stuck cartridge but this suggestion to turn the white gear until it clicks worked perfectly, much to my surprise! Thanks so much!!
Thank you - this procedure works PERFECTLY! I can't believe Cannon would rather send you a new printer than walk you through this simple procedure. Why they made the cartridges non-removable is another mystery!
Me and my daughter were struggling to get the black ink cartridge out. Found this video and it popped right out. If I hadn't found this video she would have tore my printer up!! Thank you....
Wow, Thanks a Bunch! So Helpful, and you didn't waste our time getting us there, but right to the solution. I was about to give up on Canon printers. Now it's working again, and I can still use all the non-Canon brand cartridges I bought. If anyone has printer error B504, and your printer has basically shut down, removal and replacement of the cartridges was the fix for me. This video on how to remove and replace them is the best!
omg thank you for having this video!!! I have been fighting with my MB2720 for at least an hour including a call to Canon tech support to the tune of "Just keep running the Cleaning. It will eventually give up" THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
I am happy to say that after watching your video I was able to change the needed cartridges particularly the black because despite still having ink in it, it just would not print on the one hand and on the other it was not allowing me to change the cartridge so I was totally stuck. Following your instructions I changed the cartridge and it works like a charm. Thank you for sharing the video with us.
Thank you so much for this video. You really saved my printer and my sanity ... the written instructions elsewhere were hard to follow, but this video was perfect!
Glad this worked for most people here. I bricked my MB2020 printer using this technique. So those inexpensive ink cartridges aren't so inexpensive after all...
Thanks! I was about ready to throw the printer out into the trash, but can't afford a new one. I ran my cartridges dry, but no worries because they are a generic refillable. All working as normal now. Thanks for saving my day!
I have a Canon Maxify printer and accidentally placed the wrong color cartridge in the wrong slot. It fit perfectly so I didn't damage the printer. But I couldn't remove it to place the correct color cartridge in the printer. Then I saw your solution to this problem and it worked perfectly. I had called Canon and they said I'd have to send in the printer for maintenance. There was no way to remove the cartridge while it still had ink according to the tech. The cartridge I replaced the original with was not a Canon brand. So I couldn't send the printer in for warranty service. I would have had to purchase a new printer. Thanks again!
Thank you! My black ink cartridge was empty and printing blank pages but the printer still thought it had ink in it. It wouldn't let me change it and it wouldn't print. Why Canon would ever think this is a good system is beyond me. Thanks for the great save!
Wow! This worked so well. I've tried several other UA-cam videos fixes previously but they did not work. This was easy and clearly stated. Good as new!
THANK YOU THANK YOU! I have the MB2320 and this method worked like a charm. Canon was no help at all. Glad I found this link!!!! Thanks again for posting it!
I was about to throw in the towel on my Maxify 2120 but this worked flawlessly. Thanks so much for solving my problem....I had a question mark over one print cartridge that I was sure was empty and it would not let me remove it. Problem solved.
Well if it weren't for this technique, that WOULD be the only way to remove the cartridges before the printer allows you to! Thankfully, InkOwl is there to save the day!
Thank you for sharing. Saved my printer. I'm sure Canon has a back door to enable cartridge change but no one seems to have published it yet. Will switch to InkOwl to thank you.
As the rest of the comments, thank you for the video. You saved my printer. When in error mode, turn off and on again, listen to the cartridges traverse to the left and unplug.
So far I'm the only bonehead to install a new cartridge with the protective tape still covering the ink hole! Earned myself a dead printer until I found this video. Thank you thank you. Left a reference to you in the Customer Questions section on Amazon. Oh and SHAME on Canon.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! I accidentally installed the wrong ink, but the blue eject button was stuck up, so even though the printer wanted me to replace the ink, it wouldn't eject it!!! It still wouldn't fully eject it after I spun that white gear, but it now would actually drop the carriage and I could pull out the cartridge! :) Perfect!! Thanks so much!
Thank you! Procedure works on the MB2320. Please note that for those with larger arms/hands, if you accidentally push the blue cartridge release button up before the gear is turned/clicks, the button will not work. We repeated the procedure making sure that the button was not pushed up until the gear clicked. We had accidentally purchased a set of generic dye ink cartridges. The print head was clogging causing some streaks when printing. Look for pigmented ink, not dye.
Yep. That worked. Printer took "forever" to go through it's cleaning routine, but now seems to be back to normal. Thanks Ink Owl! Oh, yes. My printer is Canon MB2360
Thank you! I have been printing my blue forms in pink for the last two weeks while waiting for the Cyan ink level to pop up eventually, which it never did... life saver
Awesome stuff!! I cannot believe how simple this remedy is!! I will most certainly bookmark this URL for future reference and to forward my friends and colleagues.
Now I know why I stuck with Lexmark all these years. I hate to diss this Christmas present my brother-in-law got for me but my Canon Maxify 2120 sucks. I didn't know when it 'cleans' it uses my ink which caused me to have to replace the cartridges a few months after I got the doggone thing! Now the no name brand black ink won't print so I have to keep maneuvering the cartridge until it does. Thank you for this tip!
There is another video from someone else here on youtube, the better way is to remove the small panel above and in front of the cartridges, once removed you can remove all the cartridges at will. I used this system today, worked perfectly and no need to put this little panel back again, just left it out and refilling is a breeze now !!!
Another comment besides previous one. I did not rotate plastic gear on left of PRN because I do not which one. There are a few plastic gears on prn left side wall Thank you for your help
The only thing the video doesn't tell you is that the B504 error code can happen anytime while the generic ink is installed. We all know why it happens so I won't bore you with that point which you can read all about in any online Canon chatroom. However, what you may not know is that same error message can occur months later after installing one or more of the many generic cartridges out there. A leaking cartridge itself can cause the same error code to appear. My best advice if your someone trying generic ink for the first time is don't ever throw away your OEM cartridges. Even if you waited properly until the ( X ) sign meaning empty appears in the LCD color ink display. Keep the OEM cartridge just in case the error message appears later with a generic installed cartridge. Follow the video to remove the faulty ink cartridge but install it with the OEM cartridge and amazingly the ( Y ) sign will reappear meaning low ink and the printer will start working again. Just wait until the ( X ) sign appears again and install with a new generic cartridge. You may be even able to reinstall the half used generic cartridge removed as long as it wasn't previously leaking. That's the key and it isn't as obvious to spot a leaking cartridge as you might think. Just remember to keep the OEM cartridges as this same routine we just followed may be necessary again 6 months or later down the road. If you have no OEM cartridges left then a hard printer reset may be necessary to fix the problem. However, just know that contrary to popular belief your printer isn't dead . Worst case scenario buy an OEM cartridge and never throw it away when you buy generic cartridges again in the future. The 82% savings you get in buying generic ink in the future will make the extra money spent for buying the OEM backup cartridge in the future well worth it.
Worked for me too. It would be difficult to find out, how to break the system :-) Thank You !!! For Canon's representatives: this is a great printer, but there should be easier way to remove the cartridge in case of failure.
I'll add my thanks. Canon is usually great but they have locked this unit down too far. Tried another non-oem brand and the black went bad quickly and couldnt get it out to put a new Canon cartridge in until i saw these instructions, so may consider these refillables. Thanks again
Canon is actually not locked down compared to other manufacturers like HP. You can remove a plastic panel in your printer for much better and easier access to the cartridges. The how to is in this CIS installation video:ua-cam.com/video/W3DJtvuLB9Y/v-deo.html
I have used your method once before and it worked perfectly. This time, everything was going fine until I was unable to slide the carriage back to the locking position after replacing the empty black cartridge. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Thank you!!! I put the wrong colour of ink in and it was giving me an error message. I used your technique and was able to remove the wrong colour and install the correct one.
How do you know if ...and can you ... Replace only a color that is actually empty, and not ALL colors each time? The display reads "such and such color _may be_ low" ...and then it guides you to replace it. But what if it's not low?
hello i watched your video. very informative, i have a question, some people say if u are not using printer for long time remove the cartridges and keep in air tight bags, i bought this one new recently and my use is very less and i go on vacation for a month or two wvry year do u recommend that its a good idea to store them in air tight bags . because the manual says replace the new cartridge as soon as u remove one .
and how much time will this cartridge guve, i know i would be printing not more than 500 pages in a year and may be a 100 colored one , so how can i save the cartridges
+studiousnr This is not a good idea. The cartridges are not the part that will dry, the printhead inside the printer with its microscopic nozzles is what dries up. You should definitely leave the cartridges inside the printer until you are ready to install another. Leave your cartridges in the printer while you are on vacation.
+studiousnr Since you print so little, you should just buy a cartridge only when one of your inks is already low. The cartridges will keep just fine if left plugged into the printer. The PGI-1200 cartridges will last about 1200 pages of black or 900 pages of color, at 5% page coverage. The PGI-2200 will last even longer than that.
+inkowl.com thank you so much for your reply , so i was thinking as i am already half way through the black ink (i didnt know the setup ink only gives 400 black and 300 colored) i have alot of hp black dye ink from my last hp printer, can i use that if it finishes to refill , or if i wanna buy from you how much would be the price for only black or whole set.
Thanks for this. I managed to get confused and placed a Cyan cartridge in the Magenta slot, and found myself stuck in an endless loop of error 5501, but unable to remove and change the cartridge. How crazy is that?!I had to use a slight variation as I could not print a test page because of the error message, so I unplugged the power cord during the start up stage when the carriage was roughly central. The rest of it played out exactly as you described, and all is now well. Thanks again. How did we ever cope before we had Google? :-)
What kind of cartridges are you using? If you are using aftermarket compatible cartridges, make sure they are built with pigment ink and not dye. If you are using refillable cartridges, once again, only fill with pigment ink, and also only fill 2/3 full.
This was helpful, but my ink carriage was stuck in the lock position and the printer wouldn’t unlock the carriage. Upon startup it moved around a little and then gave me an error message and stayed locked up. I even called Canon and they authorized a return to send me a brand new printer. They told me that the ink cartridges had to come out before I could send it back 😬 so I was kinda stuck. There is a small rectangular white piece of plastic that holds the carriage in the lock position, if you can get that piece to unlock then you can move the carriage freely like in the video. If you are in the same situation that I’m in this video is only 1/2 useful. When I turned my printer on I pushed the little white piece back and held it there so it didn’t lock up , waited for the error screen and then I was able to proceed with the instructions in the video. Hope this helps anyone else in the same situation!
Further down the page you make suggestion for another query. That was to unplug the printer for one minute, then try the startup again. This seems to have worked. I'll see when I try to print something.
Hi I have a Canon Maxify MB2760 and have done this procedure a few times with no problems. Unfortunately this time when I replugged the power lead the orange Alarm light below the triangle icon comes on and never goes off. Tried many of the reset options on google but nothing works not even the screen. Any suggestions?
I did the same and aligned black cartridge, press or lift blue tap, but black cartridge won't come out. It looks like it is stuck in position. Any help please Joseph
I'm glad we could help you recover your printer! Genuine ink from Canon is always guaranteed to work. You won't ever have a problem if you use Canon ink. However, the cost can be prohibitive if you're on a tight budget or if you print a lot. A quality aftermarket ink like InkOwl's works well too. The reason is that we take care to match the original pigment ink formulation in terms of viscosity, surface tension, and density. This ensures that the ink will flow correctly through the printhead. Our inks are made in the USA, so we can guarantee consistency with every re-order. I've seen some very poor aftermarket inks on the market! Be especially wary of any dye-based inks for Maxify printers. The Maxify printhead is designed for pigments not dyes! You can tell if an ink is dye or pigment based by looking at the colors. Dye ink are translucent and usually very dark in color. Pigment inks are opaque and bright, milky.
Even with Canon cartridges, you are only able to remove the cartridges when they reach an ink level of 0% (empty). The technique in this video is a workaround to be used if there's something wrong with a cartridge and you need to remove it sooner. With our refillable cartridges, it works the same way. You'll install them in and leave them there until the printer says a color empty, at which point you'll be able to remove that color. With our product, you can refill that cartridge with liquid ink, put it back, and it will once again show a full ink level. For more details on our product offering for Canon Maxify printers see www.inkowl.com/?p=search&q=maxify We offer a full 30 day satisfaction guarantee as to the quality of the inks, and the quality of the product. We also offer a 1 year warranty on the products, so if the refillable cartridges were to fail, we'd be able to get you replacements within that time frame.
Unfortunately this procedure did not work on my Canon Maxify MB2140. It has in fact stopped my printer from printing evenly and skips out the first three full lines in a five line printout in every paragraph. I have done every maintenance function and I have done a deep clean several times, which has nearly emptied my new black ink cartridge. Is there any other solution to my print problem?
I followed your instructions but when I pulled the power plug and opened the door the inks were still locked in position all the way to the right. At what point during printing do you shut off the power? Right after initiating printing? When printing starts and paper is coming out of the machine? Could there be another reason my inks are not appearing in the middle of their track and moving freely, as in your video?
You should try it again, sounds like bad luck, the power plug was pulled right when the inks were at the right. You want to pull the plug as the printhead is moving left and right during printing.
The instructions say to turn the white wheel clockwise until it clicks - should the wheel then be turned counterclockwise after I'm done dealing with the ink cartridges?
For B504 error: One of the cartridges is empty or almost empty and not reporting to the control panel. Just remove the cartridges and weigh them, or shake them to find the one that is low. Jeff
I am getting a ? above the black cartridge but the printer does not prompt me to replace the cartridge when I turn it off/on. The cartridge is full but does not print any black. Any suggestions on what to do?
I was ready to put my printer in the garbage. My wife went to this site and did as instructed. Now works fine.
THANK YOU!!! Seriously. I think it's ridiculous that Canon doesn't make it so you can remove the cartridges whenever you want. It Works! Got a defective cartridge. Couldn't remove until I found this instruction. Back in business now!
I thought I had tried everything to remove a very stuck cartridge but this suggestion to turn the white gear until it clicks worked perfectly, much to my surprise! Thanks so much!!
thank you , really helpfull , it took me time to figure this out , finally I checked youtube and as always , Problem solved !!!!
Thank you - this procedure works PERFECTLY! I can't believe Cannon would rather send you a new printer than walk you through this simple procedure. Why they made the cartridges non-removable is another mystery!
They're removeable, you just have to wait until they are empty.
@@Floridafanatic28
And if they are not empty but not printing???
Follow the information in this video.
@@Floridafanatic28 They won't empty if the printer won't work.
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH! IT WORKED! I had defective cartridges that I couldn’t remove due to an error message. Bless you!!!

Thank you so much for this video. You really saved my printer and my sanity ... the written instructions elsewhere were hard to follow, but this video was perfect!
This was a great video. Got me back up and running in about 4 minutes including watching the video.
Worked perfectly. A defective cartridge was driving me crazy. Thanks.
Thanks.Your video got me out of a self made hole - in a stroke of engineering brilliance I installed the cyan cartridge in the yellow slot.
Buddy, i was about to break my printer. Love how i could find a perfect solution for this specific problem. 10/10
Perfect tutorial. Helped my wife at her dental office.
Glad this worked for most people here. I bricked my MB2020 printer using this technique. So those inexpensive ink cartridges aren't so inexpensive after all...

The only thing the video doesn't tell you is that the B504 error code can happen anytime while the generic ink is installed. That's the key and it isn't as obvious to spot a leaking cartridge as you might think. Just remember to keep the OEM cartridges as this same routine we just followed may be necessary again 6 months or later down the road. Thank you very much. Finally it worked. You are Genius. Best wishes. BZ
Thank you!!! I put the wrong colour of ink in and it was giving me an error message. I used your technique and was able to remove the wrong colour and install the correct one.
This was such a huge help. Thanks so much for putting this video out.
thanks buddy really work 100% my black cartridge is empty thanks so much :)

How did you solved 5501 error? I changed cartridges and have same problem on my MB5350 printer.
What kind of cartridges are you using? If you are using aftermarket compatible cartridges, make sure they are built with pigment ink and not dye. If you are using refillable cartridges, once again, only fill with pigment ink, and also only fill 2/3 full.
inkowl.com I'm using pigment ink. I'm tried it after refill. If I change cartridges with originals will it work for me?
Using originals will always work. If original cartridges fail to work, you must contact Canon for technical support.
inkowl.com what is the main reason for this error. only writes contact servicr. what will service do in case of original cartridge is not working.
Worked great. I replaced an ink cartridge and the printer shows it's full but it's not printing.
THANK YOU! However, the ink is not working very well now, only half of the text is printed. Any suggestions?
Please tell me if the cartridges of canon maxify mb 2150 can be charged again or that changed for good?
Further down the page you make suggestion for another query. That was to unplug the printer for one minute, then try the startup again. This seems to have worked. I'll see when I try to print something.
Many thanks for information that you provided very clearly. in addition thanks for refilling idea.
Thank you for this video. It worked for me.
Is it possible to physically remove the printhead to clean in this printer?
No, on this model, it can't be done without full disassembly of the printer which is absolutely not recommended!
Worked like a charm!!! Thank you very much.
You guys are geniuses!!!!
God bless your soul!!!!! Thank you so much for this.
Brilliant- thank you very much from Sydney
YOU ARE A LIFESAVER! THANKS ALOT! WILL ONLY BE USING GENUINE FROM NOW LOL
So if I use InkOwl ink will I have to use this method to eject the ink? Also what kind of guarantee do I get with your inks? Appreciate the reply
For more details on our product offering for Canon Maxify printers see www.inkowl.com/?p=search&q=maxify
We offer a full 30 day satisfaction guarantee as to the quality of the inks, and the quality of the product. We also offer a 1 year warranty on the products, so if the refillable cartridges were to fail, we'd be able to get you replacements within that time frame.
Thank you! It worked on my Pixma 2350.
This worked perfectly. Thank You
The instructions say to turn the white wheel clockwise until it clicks - should the wheel then be turned counterclockwise after I'm done dealing with the ink cartridges?
No, that's not required.
For B504 error: One of the cartridges is empty or almost empty and not reporting to the control panel. Just remove the cartridges and weigh them, or shake them to find the one that is low. Jeff
thanks for your explanation, its mean a lot for us
Thank you! This totally solved my problem.
Thanks inkowl. This worked a treat!!
I am getting a ? above the black cartridge but the printer does not prompt me to replace the cartridge when I turn it off/on. The cartridge is full but does not print any black. Any suggestions on what to do?
You contact your vendor, sounds like a defective black cartridge.
