The GD88 is a rebranded Kydera DR-880UV. There's noting new or special as it's on the market since 2020 (I got mine exactly two years ago in August 2020 for US$ 159.- incl. shipping out of China. Most firmware bugs have been fixed two years ago due to the good Kydera support. I hope that the support will now continue (no updates since 2 years cause of a small community) as it's now available as a Radioddity radio. FYI, I made the recommendation for the power H/L icons (they implemented it within two days) as before they only had the useless green/red bargraph for power. 73 DK5BM

I'm waiting for Raddioditty to get back to me on a technical support question, and then I'll decide. I enjoy and appreciate the way you deliver the content. It's about the gear, and very well understandable. Most of my "fellow Americans" with channels like yours are more about themselves than the gear. If I want to see a clown I'll look at the circus. A lot of these channels receive donor radios from the companies selling the radios for featuring them on their channel.
It is hard to find an honest review of a radio these days as there are so many out there willing to gee up a radio on the strength of a free item. No malice intended here, especially towards you Matt just stating the way it is on UA-cam these days.
I follow a lot of channels on here and have a van load of radios.
Radiosifcation done a review of the same radio only difference being he also described a simlar radio too with a rebranded chassis the "Kydera DR-880UV"
      ua-cam.com/video/-a5QWYgwWjg/v-deo.html
I would say this time that Radiosifcations review was a lot more realistic as I have the same radio. I'm sure someone further up mentioned the kydera as well.
BUT in saying that, the usual rules of thumb apply where radio is concerned. what might be good for one may not be for another. And that could well be why your views to the HT is so different Matt 🤔
Thanks for sharing Mate, well laid out and clear narration as always.

200 plus page manual ... holy cow, truly multifunctional and well documented! Usually I hate the high compression sound of DMR, but it sounds relatively OK.
Shame it doesn't seem to have RX capability of AirBand in AM, would be a nice feature on top. Some radios have it and it is not even documented.

    • @baronedipiemonte3990
      @baronedipiemonte3990 Рік тому +1

That would be a nice option. I recently purchased, and returned two of the same radios (branded differently) that had AM Air, and advertised "frequency/data capture". The Air reception was marginal, and the "capture" just didn't work. And then the Chinese on eBay blocked me from buying radios from Chinese sellers. I told eBay BYE ! If I can't buy one thing, I won't bye ANYTHING! So to anyone else who sees this, if you buy a rig on eBay like I did, and return it, you're blacklisted. And many times, despite a different name, it's THE SAME SELLER !

    • @n1vca
      @n1vca Рік тому +2

@@baronedipiemonte3990 Thanks for the info. I can not share the experience, whenever I have returned something I would send a list of measurements and facts where the product didn't meet its specs, so I always got the money back and could still order other equipment. Maybe it has to do how serious you analyze their equipment and then point out in exactly which areas it didn't match its own promises. If you send it back without a proper list of reasons they think you do this as some sort if entertainment and then I can imagine that they stop making business with you. Put yourself in their shoes, would you send products across the planet when someone returns stuff without proper feedback?
I think there are people out here that have a shopping addiction and have more addiction than money, you really want to stay away from these customers. You will sink tons of money into shipping and end up with a pile of used equipment that can't be resold for the full price!
I am not saying that you fit into this category, but there are plenty of these people out there and as a dealer you can only survive if you stay away from them. I get where they are coming from.

Since the radio supports crossband repeat and the audio did not cut out on VFO A when you transmitted on VFO B, that would mean this radio supports full duplex which is useful for satellites. It would be interesting to see how this radio performs with satellites.

  • @AG7SM

It does look like a good DMR radio. What I'd really like to see is a form factor and UI that isn't copied from mid-00's mobile phones. The red/green buttons (hangup/call) and the general structure of the menus are giving me flashbacks of my Sony/Ericsson T68i. I understand that any extra effort they put into those areas would most likely result in a price increase, which means they won't do it, because they already have a good product that will sell well. Hell, I'm thinking about picking one up. I just wish someone would give the UI some love, and maybe drop the red/green cell phone buttons.

Have you tried it yet as a digital scanner, for example, if you set it to scan in the commercial uhf band, 453mhz upwards, would it halt and play the commercial dmr signal? Only my connect systems dmr radios do this flawlessly, my other dmr radios though good on amateur dmr do not always decode commercial systems. Keep up the great content. I got one of these a few days ago. Solidly built radio. The display is good. The biggest issue I'm having is the setup is very cumbersome in comparison to the 878UVII +. I have finally got it to the point I can transmit but no receive audio on DMR channels can see the S meter showing that it is reciving, analog works flawless. Tried wiping it clean this morning and set it up again with a fresh start but the "factory reset" is far from a reset. Going to set it aside for a bit and take a fresh look at it later.

The easiest way to set it up is to use individual channels per talkgroup:
      >First create a contact for each talkgroup you want to use.
      >Then create an RX Group for each of those talkgroups, you can add multiple contacts to an RX Group but for better understanding I would use individual groups. You can always enable promiscuous mode to hear other talkgroups if needed.
      >Next create a zone and add a channel for the talkgroup you want to use (hotspot use info below)
      >Then select the contact and RX Group for that channel.
      Simplex hotspots:
You must set RX Timeslot and TX Timeslot to "ON" otherwise you will have trouble transmitting or receiving from the hotspot.
      Duplex hotspots:
Set them up as you would for any other repeater, with the relevant timeslot for the talkgroup used.

I own the original Kydera CDR-300UV, Radioddity DB25-D and now the GD-88 (actually the Kydera DR-880UV version but it's the same radio, now running the GD-88 firmware)
The way I have my radios set up is each repeater has it's own zone and each talkgroup has it's own channel within the repeater zones.
I have had no issues receiving from repeaters or my simplex and duplex hotspots.

Hopefully the SMA is stronger than the ones found on most Chinese handhelds as they have a tendency to snap off if a high load is put on the top of the antenna. Motorola etc use a reverse SMA because if you drop the radio on the antenna, rather than the SMA breaking off the top of the radio, the SMA on the bottom of the antenna breaks off which is much cheaper and easier to fix. Would be nice to have some actual performance information rather than just a run down of the specs, even if it's just a side by side comparison with another similar radio, audio quality, sensitivity, blocking, would all be good to understand.

There's currently around 225k ID's. That is rising daily but still some time before we reach 300k.
However.. it should be possible to increase the number of contacts in future firmwares.
The Kydera CDR-300 originally had 200k and was then increased to 300k.. I have successfully written 500k contacts to the radio with no apparent side effects. Although it may be creeping into memory locations it shouldn't but an official firmware would take account for that.
      See this image: drive.google.com/file/d/1VNvLt3E3ULUe-gr0Ibel_hbS4RWeFyXD
This radio shouldn't be too much different, depending on how much memory it has. I haven't done any testing, mainly due to the fact it takes upwards of 50 minutes to write 200k+ contacts at 128bytes.

Unfortunately that’s the only thing it’s lacking, Bluetooth. But you can purchase BT adapters that plug into the mic/speaker socket if needed.

@@TechMindsOfficial Yet the BT option exists at Kydera. Strange not to offer the GD-88 which is just the same product with another name...

They also didn't want to supply me, an OM from Switzerland, although I was already a well-paying customer. I can't recommend the company at all I think the newest Anytone has more to offer than this phone from the shitty company.

Doesn't support APRS text messages, as I understand it. Only sends a position beacon. Disappointing.

The software is a dumpster fire. Not even the most basic of editing capability. Editing a zone corrupted the adjacent zone, destroying about 2 hours of effort. The serial drivers are trash. It is 2022 and this is a $200+ radio but still uses the same serial chipset as a $30, junk radio.
Manual is fine. Radio operation itself seems to work well, but there are some nuances to using GPS/APRS.
No DTMF from the keypad. So if you use repeaters with DTMF activated features, this is a fail. If you will only ever sit in range of your hotspot then it should be fine. But the software may cause PTSD regardless.
