When I was in the National Guard we had a ‘Nam veteran LRRP NCO. When out on the 2 week FTX the 1SG told me to deliver a message to that NCO’s section. I thought it would be cool to sneak up on them. We were all parked in the middle of an open field in the afternoon and I was about 50 meters away. The section was behind a high back HMMWV and I could hear the NCO talking to his guys. I got to about 10 meters from the HMWWV when I hear the NCO ask in a conversational voice “Can I help you Specialist?” _from right behind me._ Not only did he intuit I was sneaking up on him without seeing them, he Ninja’d up behind _me._

I love Vietnam era equipment, the perfect mix of old and new. I'll show this to my 86 year old dad he's a Vietnam combat vet. He was in 25th infantry, 38th scout dog platoon, 101st and 82nd airborne among others over the years

NOTE: One exceptional movie on LRRP in Vietnam was the independent film "84 Charlie MoPic" (1989). Just a fantastic full-length film on a 5-man LRRP team in the central highlands. It uses a unique filming technique from the perspective of a 2-man motion picture (MoPic) team who tags along with the LRRP team to conduct a segment of the US Army Lessons Learned program. Worth your time.

That movie is so terrible. I bought it for my father who was a LRRP years ago thinking he would really like it. He said it was stupid and completely inaccurate. I remember a couple things he mentioned: they had LRRPs wearing metal helmets and listing to music on the field radio when on a mission. There was a bunch of other silly crap that i don't recall. Not a good movie!
@@tac6044 - Yep. They talk too loud (psst...that's so the movie camera and mic can hear the actors). They play music on the PRC-77 (uh-huh...also done for the drama and to add a bit of sound track to the movie because US Army Lesson Learned videos don't have a sound track). The one Soldier who wears a helmet does so because he is partially losing his sanity - and NOT because it was common for LRRP to do so. It's for dramatic effect.
We can nitpick any movie to death - 'We were Soldiers' or 'Saving Private Ryan' or 'Platoon.' They all have flaws.
My father couldn't enjoy movies about the Vietnam War, either. It was his war. He did three tours. All these years later, I can't watch films about Iraq. They're just crap! All of them. So...the lesson is this...veterans don't enjoy films about their wars. The story is too real to us, and any discrepancy in the storytelling is so glaring that to us it appears to be an "intentional lie."
@@christopherlarsen7788 I really have no opinion about it and i was simply sharing an actual LRPs review of the film. He thought it was terrible. Then again he was judging based on accuracy.
I think I’ve flown in this very same Huey at an air show in Georgia in 2018. It was marked aircraft 104 of the 229th AHB flown and maintained by the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation. Great experience all around and went back the next year and flew with them again. I highly recommend to anyone to take a ride in a Huey. The sights and sound of the Huey is incredible!
I read Frank Camper’s LRRP:The Professional in high school. One thing he documented was his never ending search for the perfect primary weapon for his mission, including time spent with a .45auto M3 Grease Gun. He said “(Ammunition) Weight alone was reason enough to not carry a .45 ANYTHING.” Fantastic video, fellas. Thank you for the resources and work you put into this presentation.
Man, I haven't run across many people that remember that book much less read it. I remember reading that back in the late 1980s. Good personal memoir. 4th Div LRRPs if I remember correctly. You don't read many personal memoirs about LRRPs period much less from the "Funky" Fourth, so his is a rare book. Glad to find someone else that read that obscure book!!!

@@Henryivika Depends on date, unit and what level of command the team is from. Studies and Observation Group vast difference from a Line Unit team. Same for Marine Force Recon teams.

No lie, I had heard of LRRP as a kid from reading comics. In the GI Joe comic books, Storm Shadow, Snake Eyes and Stalker were all part of the same LRRP team in 'Nam

You are correct about the diversity of weaponry carried by LRRPs. A friend of mine (RIP) showed me a picture in a book back in the 90s, of him packing an S&W Model 19 in a shoulder rig...

As a former recon and CSAR guy myself, I got a lot of my training from some of these old LRRP/LRS guys. Mad respect for them. They are badasses of the highest order.
Been there and yes you are absolutely correct! Alot of my training was from old school vets, no socks, no drawers best thing they taught me!
My father in law was in Vietnam don’t have a lot of info of what he actually did or what unit he was in. He did talk about it very little but no real details. He passed 2 years ago and right before his passing he pulled out a box he had stored away. He was in the army special forces 68-69 and worked with the Australians other than that I’m not for certain what he actually did ,really wish I had asked now but felt if he wanted us to know he would have told us just didn’t want to be disrespectful by asking . I can’t remember what the patches were to describe them but we have pictures of him carrying the Swedish k. I didn’t even realize they were used in Vietnam until then. Rip Dennis(Denny)Shoup. Lost but never forgotten. Thank you to all that served. Thank you for taking the time to put this video together. Very interesting and informative.

If you were in any kind of SOG specialty unit where there were a lot of 'classified' operations and missions - which they all turned out to be- especially during Pheonix and if your unit/base camp was training ARVNs you used a wide variety of weaponry. Everything from grease guns to Thompsons to .30 M2s etc. Lightweight 9mm 'K's w/36 round magazines were popular among heavy night ambush teams where the idea was to concentrate as much surprise intense firepower in the shortest possible few seconds at close range. Then falling back fast and calling in the pre-plotted arty or mortars on your position to finish the job, which was unlike the running gunfighting in day LRRP ambush depicted in the reenaction here. As the well-done video here alluded to, there was a lot of different ways and equipment used to kill each other there.

not many people were issued that weapon, certainly MACV-SOG guys used it they were part of the 5th Special Forces in Vietnam. so you might go looking there for more info as they had their "offices" in Nha Trang which wasn't to far from where the Australian troops were based.

Great video! I’ve been watching for years and the videos just keep getting better
I forgot to add a comment about tiger stripes which we bought from the local market. I don't think the US Army ever had them produced at least not in 1967-1969. Some South Vietnamese Military Units wore tiger stripes, but I think they were also bought off the local market. I actually bought and wore tiger stripes on two missions. The first problem was that the locally made tiger stripes were made from a cotton material. That caused them to be like a sponge in the jungle and once they got wet(almost immediately) they hardly ever dried out and added weight to your overall carry. Your body also got rashes from the wet cotton where ever it rubbed especially the crotch area. I tried them during the dry season and they were miserable; I never even considered wearing them during the wet season/monsoons. Secondly they would tear easily. It exposed human skin to an open smorgesboard for all of the insects and leach relatives. As to their ability to camouflage the soldier, I'm rather undecided about that. We normally established an ambush on a trail at 10 feet or less from the trail. This was because of the vegetation and you needed to instantly see, hear and smell what was happening on the trail or bad things would be happening to you and the team. Because of the closeness to the trail, any movement made by a team member could be seen by someone on the trail and visa versa. That was an example of a sword with two edges: good or bad! Even if you didn't move the large, dark tiger stripes had a tendency to standout in the deep green of the bush. Whereas with the the jungle cammou being used, we could lay by a trail and the enemy would walk right by us and never know we were there. This was especially important when you realized what was walking by you was just a small point element which could be followed by several squads/platoon/company especially if they were NVA! Even though your heart would be at its maximum beats per minute, if no one moved we normally and safely let them pass or if things went to shit we blew our claymores. That is when things went to shit and all hell would break loose. My normal ambush zone contained a minimum of four claymores set out in cross kill zones and probably 10-15 feet from our fighting positions. That is why camouflage was a life or death matter for a Lurp.

From what I have seen in period pictures, the Tigers worn in Nam were kinda tight, or "skinny" as we would say now, idk if they had them tailored to be tighter but the repros out here are mostly too baggy...

Excellent video guys. I have not only been a student of LRRPs and Rangers from the Vietnam War. I’m in contact with several former LRRPs from the war. I also served for three years on a LRS (D) company where I served on a team as the Assistant Team Ldr in the 1st Gulf War. Attended the LRS School both the local and the Army courses. Love this subject.
We used much of this same gear back in the day.
I carried four M16 Mag pouches on my belt along with 2canteens and a bit pack with a first aid and a compass pouch. With my Strobe pouch on my lover shoulder harness support below my chest line. Because of the large Lowe Alpine rucks we got. We took off the detached belt supports that held a rappelling seat in it. Anyway. I also got my hands on a British chest harness. I carried extra mags smokes etc in it. I must have weighed 100 lbs on top of my own weight. Hard work. But it was a blast doing that job in Iraq. We vu moved all night and were dug in and hidden in the day. Carried a MULE with all of our personal weapons an ammo. Even two SINGARs with batteries and two five gallon water jugs. Damn. I was young.

Great video gentlemen. I enlisted as a 67N Huey door gunner in 1985 and all of the NCO’s in our unit were Vietnam veterans. I can still remember all of us new guys being mesmerized as we hung on every word of our elders. They jacked with me continually, like sending me to get rotor wash. But those guys were the coolest.

I love Tiger Stripe camo. I been wearing tiger stripe pants to Tactical Game skirmishes. A lot of people wearing OCPs now. But Tigers stand out in a crowd.

The first time knowing "ERDL" camos, back in 1994, when i was buying 1/35 scale "Nam Series" LRRP and Navy SEAL model kits made by Dragon. I even didn't know what kind of pattern is that, Vietnam gear information was minimal way back then. I became an ERDL fan since then.

Great video! The reenactment sequence is spectacular and as always great information to boot. I've always loved the tiger stripe camo. Funnily enough, I remember first hearing about the LRRP as a kid thanks to comic books! The original run of the GI Joe comics was written by Larry Hama, an actual Army veteran. He included a lot of realism and military terms into those early stories. As part of the backstory of Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes, they both served together in 'Nam along with Stalker as part of a LRRP team. Now you know... and knowing is half the battle.

Aaah, PRC77 - carried that a couple of times during my service in FDF.
They were license built here in Finland as LV217, also known as ”Ventti-seiska” (Vingt-Un-Seven, Blackjack-Seven, ventti having also the meaning that you are so tired that you are over the limit) and Sony Ryydman (from once popular personal casette player Sony Walkman; ryyd, ryytynyt meaning dog-gone tired).
We usually rigged those to the front, as to balance the load of the rucksack and also to be able to operate it without taking it off.
My grandfather was one of these guys. He was also in a Ranger company in korea.

I put together a complete early war Vietnam Marine set ten years ago. The hardest stuff to find the early Flak Vest without the two lower pockets and marine issue boots both were spendy when I finally found them. Cool vid Im gonna send the link to my uncle who was in 2/5 Cav, 1CD 69-70.

The Air Force survival knife notice the 2 holes in the guard they were there so a spear could be improvised from the knife if needed. 550 cord 6 plus feet 12 Ft. plus even better double through the holes to equal length then start wrapping and knotting as time and cord allowed.

My friend Jim Kyle WV was in the LRRPs from 67-68. He started with green fatigues then Duck camo then tiger stripes. He was in Cambodia a lot unofficially and went through TET. The VC by passed his FOB on the way to hit other targets. He went through the Mac-V jungle school. Graduation consisted of going out on patrol, but he had already been out on different operations prior to that school. He did say that it was helpful. Plenty of Green ERDL available in 1979 when I was on active duty as a NCO. I was training USAF air flight medics who were issued the Green ERDLs. Made sure I got a pair. Great video guys.

Many from the RVN LRRP and Ranger units were put into leadership positions when the 1st and 2nd Ranger Battalions were formed in the mid 1970s, some were my squad and platoon leaders:
Platoon Leader Lt. Bargwell, Platoon Sgt. Thompson (both deceased), etc.
I took notes while watching this video, from my first hand experience, and once I get my thoughts together I will post them here (I'm off duty Tuesday so probably then).
