- Carol Burnett recalls falling in love with Hollywood as a child, catching the acting bug while attending UCLA, deciding to leave college, and moving to New York City to pursue her aspirations of performing in musical comedies on Broadway. Burnett discusses how she dealt with rejection in show business, her first big break, how she eventually got her own self-titled television show, lessons she learned as a performer, and how she maintained a work and family balance.
Carol Creighton Burnett was born on April 26, 1933, in San Antonio, Texas, to Joseph and Ina Louise Burnett. After her parents divorced in the late 1930s, Burnett moved with her grandmother, to a small apartment in Hollywood, California. She attended Hollywood High School, graduating in 1951. After studying theater arts and English at the University of California, Los Angeles, as an aspiring playwright, Burnett left school early and made her way to New York City in hopes of breaking into acting. Burnett made her first television appearance in the early 1950s with a short stint on The Winchell-Mahoney Show, a children's TV program. Soon after, she began co-starring with Buddy Hackett on the sitcom Stanley (1956-57). In 1959, Burnett became a regular on The Garry Moore Show. Over the years, she was also featured on occasional CBS specials. Already a popular performer, she got her own comedy-variety show, The Carol Burnett Show, in 1967. The show ran for 11 seasons, leaving the air in 1978. In addition to her hit television show, Burnett has appeared in a number of feature films, including Pete 'n' Tillie (1972), The Front Page (1974), Annie (1982), Noises Off (1992) and Post Grad (2009). She made her Broadway debut in the musical Once Upon a Mattress in 1959 and went on to appear in a few other Broadway shows, including Moon Over Buffalo (1995-1996) and Putting It Together (1999-2000). Her 1986 autobiography, One More Time: A Memoir, provided the source material for the play Hollywood Arms, which was performed on Broadway from October 2002 to January 2003. Burnett co-wrote the piece with her oldest daughter, Carrie Hamilton. Over her decades-long career, Burnett has won numerous honors, including American Comedy Awards, Emmy and Golden Globe awards, the 1980 Women in Film Crystal Award, the 2006 Presidential Medal of Freedom and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
From the 2013 PBS Documentary “Makers: Women Who Make America”, examines how women have helped shape America over the past 150 years, striving for a full and fair share of political power and economic opportunity.

Carol Burnett is 90 years old? Wow, look at her physical energy, mental quickness and upright posture. What an amazing lady and life!
This was recorded in 2012 as it is from a 2013 PBS Documentary “Makers: Women Who Make America”.
Having a crazy side , being in touch with it, helps you ride the Wives...a great Spirit that Carol...but a humble Beginning..
She is beautiful at any age. She's been part of so many people's consciousness. Amazing. See. Don't drink and a decent future might ensue. Probably the nicest pest you don't want to stop bugging you.💙 ps I remember my mother wanting to be her when she watched her show in the 60's
@@gregpendrey6711 My Mom was inspired by her...and shared the same quircky humor...Carol had a great Troupe...you could see they are having fun...lol
And her amazing beauty at 90! Amazing.....aging.....like fine wine❤❤❤
Who DOESN'T love Carol Burnett???? She's the best. Talk about a great American.
I see you have 91 likes
Carol Burnett turns that number, on 4-26
I have adored this woman and her talent since The Princess and the Pea and the old Gary Moore Show. Guess how old I am, though younger than her,❤ and she looks way better than me!
Sorry, Once Upon a Mattress....
I got to Meet Carol in 1998 and I will NEVER forget it!! She was and IS SOOO Sweet and Warm and Friendly to Me! She is a National Treasure!! Love You, Carol!
You’re so lucky 🍀 ❤❤❤❤✝️
My older brother Peter loved Carol Burnette. I didn’t know who she was. But I am amazed
42:12 at how good she looks around what now must be her late eighties.
“Reckless disregard for the truth” Good move suing ‘em! I wonder how that would work today in an age when people talk about “your truth” and “my truth” as if there is no such thing as truth. Anybody know if one can sue a lawyer or a contractor for reckless disregard for the truth?
ABSOLUTELY CORRECT 💯%. National Treasure!
Carol Burnett will be 91 April 26 of this year and she looks great.
I was a teenager at the time and I still remember watching the sketch with the green dress and curtain rod. We laugbed at home just as much as the studio audience!
I was about 12 I think. I fell out laughing. SUCH a memorable scene!!!
Ohh that’s my favorite! Classic! 😂😂
Oh my goodness, that when I fell in love with her too❤
I will always remember that scene, coming down the stairs, wearing Scarlett 's green velvet draperies, including the drapery rod ! ! ! I love all the players & skits. I was a friend of one of Carol's cousins, Debbie O. She raved about Carol. Debbie was just as funny as Carol. Where are you Debbie ? Howdy from San Antonio ! !
She is HYSTERICAL. I thank her for all her shows.
My favorite character of hers is Eunice, who always made me laugh.
Carol is a living legend.
Yes. Loved her character Eunice! And her accent too! A great actress, comedian lady!!!
Eunice was hilarious and heart breaking at the same time… so many dreams.
She is almost 90 years old if this was filmed ten months ago. What vitality this woman has!
From 2013 PBS Documentary “Makers: Women Who Make America”. Probably recorded on 2012.
@@paulazemeckis7835 So she was 79-80 at the time of this interview.
@@dmnemaineno, almost 90.....amazingly pretty!😊
@@user-yy7hg4ph6f Now she's 90. The interview was over 10 years ago.
Wow. When I got around show business I simply didn’t like it. She said you have to be born with the fire and I believe that
Carol Burnett is a national treasure.🙏❤️🇺🇸
Proud to give you your 100th like
Carol Burnett, Vicki Lawrence, Tim Conway, Harvey Korman and Lyle Waggoner....what a great comedy team!
All the great guest stars Steve Lawrence etc,
One classy lady!
A national treasure!
My favorite memories of Carol Burnett were laughing hysterically
with my family every week watching her show!
I can still hear my father laughing until he was crying belly laughing
and holding his sides!
Thank you so much Carol for the love and laughter! 😂
I'm 62 now. When I graduated 8th grade I was voted " the nxt Carol Burnett"
Just left that age
That’s cool!❤
She manifested her own destiny by visualization of what was going to happen ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yes she did, and it strikes me that she was and still is unaware of the mechanics of manifesting. Its seems she just inadvertently framed a visualisation/alignment.
In the 1960’s I saw her in the Dallas Summer Musicals in Princess and the Pea and Annie Get Your Gun. I met her after one of the shows for her autograph. I loved her so much! I was in awe of her red hair as she was always black & white on tv. I told her “I never knew you had red hair!” and she was the kindest person & told me in a surprised voice “I never knew you had blonde hair!” She made feel like the queen of the world! I still love her! ❤
Carol Burnett is one of a kind and there will never be another one like her! What a smart, genuine, humble sweetheart she is. She is amazing for her age and I wish her many more years of happiness.
I'll never forget the Gone with the Wind episode with Carol as Scah-lett O'Hara! Still laugh at that curtain rod over her shoulders!!
A classic but I've always wondered what the people that never saw the movie or read the book!!!
@@davidstoughton3257, Yes, you'd have to know the story to see how incredibly funny an idea that was!
We were blessed to have grown up during the 50s and 70s.
Good times playing outdoors all day, no cellphones- we didn’t even have cordless phones or an answering machine- how did we survive, and 7 channels of clean comedic entertainment for TV, without a remote control. It's fun watching her re-run's on UA-cam.
We were lucky to have shows like hers growing up. There’s nothing like that now sadly.
Carol has written a number of marvelous books about her life. I highly recommend them. She is a truly remarkable person.
Carol Burnette was my all time favorite growing up in the 70s, through junior high, high school and beyond. Now almost 60 and I still look to catch her reruns on TV each night. Not only is she an incredible talent, and warm hearted person, her imagination and attention to detail while she replicated all those famous movie stars in the classic films of the 40s and 50s is remarkable and flawless. I love hearing these background stories about how these immensely famous people found their way to the top. I often wonder in my generation if any of today's stars can compare to icons like Carol.
If that be the case( _'[your] all time favorite'_ ) then why not learn to spell her name correctly.
Her story about the $50.00 in the envelope is totally amazing. It's like the sender of the money KNEW Ms Burnett was going to forge the path that she did, and the sender wanted to ensure that she would be successful.
My goodness, Carol was 80 years old during this interview. She is as bright as a penny. God love her ... I certainly do!
90 years!
Thank you for the years of entertainment. 🇨🇦 Your show was a family favorite.❤
The UA-cams are still a fave with my family!!!!
I was born in 1959. She was my role model for me when I made people laugh!
the $50 dollars in an envelope is an amazing story a miracle . I think to your destiny
Jerry Lewis said about Carol that she is the greatest women comedian that ever lived, how right he was!
Carol I looked at how old you are, you don't seem that old. With your sense of humor, it keeps you young. truly,😊 God bless you
I love Carol Burnett! She’s a National Treasure!
This was the BEST interview ever. Sure do miss her show. Best comical variety show. She seems so down to earth and she looked great on this interview.
Carol Burnett is such a sweetheart!! I love her!!
There is power in ignorance, sometimes. If you don't know the odds are stacked against you, you aren't thinking about failure and you are willing to take the leap of faith.
This interview was done 2013! And all those icons as guest performers, what a privilege not just for Carol and her crew but for her audiences. So bless'd.
I absolutely love this woman. The contributions she has made to the entertainment industry are insurmountable. What an amazing person!❤
This was a very nice interview. She’s very open and friendly. I’m so glad she refrained from a political opinion.
What a brilliant woman.
GREAT HAVING YOU AS A COMEDIC BIG SISTER IN OUR FAMILY!!
I grew up watching the Carol Burnett show. What an exceptional, talented and Amazing Lady!! I love her!!!
She is still so pretty.....maybe even more now! What a doll.....love her, and my late Mother adored her!😊❤
Carol is simply the best. So proud she’s a Texan! Love you, Carol!
She's been in California for 60 years!!!
@@elizabethmencia6027 so what ? She was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas.
I could listen to her for hours! Fascinating interview; she is absolutely delightful!
Loved watching her show when I was a kid in the 70s. She’s had such an amazing life and is a great storyteller❤.
Love her❤️❤️❤️
She is Sunday night’s Carol Burnet show growing up.
Carol approached her start not only with drive, but with a good heart and intelligence. Plus talent and personality.
Shes got good memory. I watched Carol burnet show all the the time. My husband thought it was stupid. One day my husband watched it and he was hooked. It was hilarious.
How dear lord can she be 90..OMG...one of the loves of my life. thanks Carol.
Carol Burnett is my absolute favorite
She should be on one of the bills. To say she is talented would be an understatement.
Just now seeing this today. I grew up with all the variety shows...The Carol Burnett show was the best. Can't get into any of the reality shows they have now. So glad I grew up in a time where there were quality shows on...how I miss those days...
The way she 'was' is why she was a success. The women today are cocky, too sure of themselves' a-n-d the smartest WOMAN in the room.. just ask them. God bless you Carol ♡
Love Carol Burnett ❤❤❤
Absolutely wonderful interview! If only women these days had the same discipline as Carol! She could care less about “power”…she just worked hard and cared about people! 🙏❤️
Carol Burnett is amazing! She is still as vibrant as she was back in the 60s and 70s. I loved her in the films, The Four Seasons and Pete & Tillie.
I remember watching the Carol Burnette with my grandmother. The show was so funny! I loved when they would be doing a skit and start laughing themselves. Which in turn me and my grandmother would laugh even more. Best one was the Gone with the Wind skit. So funny!
Loved this interview. And Carol so perfectly expressed how women were able to get what they wanted in that era by being softer rather than shrill. I'm 80. I know exactly how that works and has worked in my own life. When given a chance men want to help women, but they don't want to be told what to do. It's called being feminine. Feminine energy attracts. Carol just gave a workshop on that for young ladies. I hope they were able to hear it. :)
I could not imagine meeting her… I would cry
What a beautiful and inspirational being this woman is. And what a privilege to see this interviews of my favorite comedian!
I really like Carol Burnett. She would be a great friend if one was lucky enough to know her. She is personable, honest, and gracious for what life has given to her. We need more humble people like this in the world today. Thank you Carol for the enjoyment you have given to others through your hard work and many talents. We are the better for being your audience!
Makes me happy to see someone thriving, sharp & funny at Carol's age I grew up watching her show that aired at 10PM on Saturday. A simpler time & fond memories.
Hollywood Royalty in a town of crazy people. One of the funniest and most respected performers, Carol drew in all of the best talent in one show. I watched it from the beginning and Carol's good hearted nature came through to me. Her book captures where all of it came from. Love to Carol Burnett. I hope she is comforted by family and good people around every corner. I love you, Carol !
I loved this interview! I grew up watching Carol and she is truly an amazing woman.
This was the best thing. I never realized what a down to earth and solid person she was. Good for you Carol.
Thank you for my childhood memories😊💗
❤I love you Carol God bless you🕊️
Extremely talented lady, she was the Mom I never had. Long may you run Ms. Burnett!
Love Carol!! She's one of the best, sincere, truly gifted, kind... she's escaped and/or avoided the narcissism trap that so many celebs fall into. She is just wonderful and one of my all time favorites. Still watch her show. Great cast and truly funny without turning to vulgarity or politics. Great human being!! 🙂
When TV mattered.

Carol is a comedy genius and I grew up watching her show, every Saturday night. I still adore her! We would all gather 'round the TV with popcorn and soda every week and we loved them all so much. Brilliant sketches and lots of laughter. I still watch the re-runs. Love to see that Carol is still doing so well and so youthful. Wow! My mom is the same age, born the same year, and they are similar (in the humor department). Thank you for everything, Carol!!!

Wow, an actress who stayed humble and real! Never got full of herself, except that one time, and was blessed to quickly be humbled by the inebriated man.

I love Carol❤. I grew up watching this show. So many wonderful memories and laughter she has given my family and the world!
Love her
I grew up as a kid watching this amazingly talented woman and she was, is, and will always be one of the funniest and most talented actor/comedian that has ever existed! Right up there as Lucille Ball and others that we’ve admired. Glad that we are privileged with still having her but when she is gone there will never be anyone like her!!
Lucille Ball and Carol were great friends and Lucy would send Carol flowers every year on her birthday. Lucy passed away on Carols birthday. Carol received birthday flowers from Lucy, who previously had ordered them for her.😢❤
Carol is so natural and down to earth. It’s refreshing to see especially nowadays. She seems to have had a very balanced perspective throughout her career and that was so important especially in that industry.
Thank you for posting this video.❤
Wonderful interview with a brilliant, talented, delightful Carol. Thank you. ❤
Carol is EPIC, a true legend on screen!
Carol Burnette give you a laugh
I ❤ CAROL BURNETT FOREVER. WOULD WORK FOR HER FOR FREEEEE
Carol makes me smile and cry tears of joy, she was and is such a gift to the world. Her comedy, her dramatic roles, and most importantly her heart touched me and so many. Thank you Ms Carol Burnett for everything.
