"I wanted it to be something that feels kind."
    - ONE (Mangaka of Mob Psycho 100)
To quote from my video "Mob Psycho 100 is a favorite show of mine because its protagonist is kind to an unfaltering degree. He knows everyone suffers differently, people come in all degrees of faults and issues because the world can be harsh, but decides to be kind anyways." Mob's story is so beautifully kind, and he's the type of protagonist I wish we had more of. I love this story so much and the messages it delivers, and hope I did it justice in this video!
A big thank you also to Syd Taylor, Brenda and Anonymous for helping out with the script - specifically the topics on Autism. I'm not Autistic myself, so gaining help from people who are made my script much stronger and accurate.

It's such a fun and necessary subversion for this kind of story. So often are the jock characters bullies and it would be obvious for the kid with psychic powers to join the telekinesis club. It's important mob joins the body improvement club because their ethos is closer to the overall morals of the show, and more importantly since they're already on the path of change. The body improvement club gives mob the momentum to drive his own change; while in contrast the telekinesis research club remains stagnate and show no intention to change. Only later through the momentum of mob, (and the body improvement club which uses their room as a storage closet, or rather they use their closet as a club room), do they begin to change.

Excellent analogy of autistic meltdowns. Mob as a character feels like a mirror to Saitama (who has already achieved all his developments) and is just a lovely treat to watch through and through.

Thanks for the video, my dude. I had not considered the autism angle for Mob. But it certainly tracks.
The full impact of mob's narrative didn't really hit with me fully until I finished the manga and got to the last panel. For me, Mob's power as protagonist is that, as his nickname suggests, he doesn't see himself as a protagonist but an extra in his own life, nor does he see his powers as something that makes him better than other people; by that same token, Reigen has no power, but often has protagonist moments purely due to his charisma and decency; even more, all the main antagonists see themselves as the protagonist who aren't recognized for their power.
It's a great inversion of the way shonen power fantasies often go in which outsider gets super power and integrates into society by learning to control said power and using them to save the day and then gets friends, feelings of significance, and a nice job.
By having Mob recognize that you only get anywhere in life by doing things and putting yourself out there, with grit, and taking it day by day - and most importantly not seeing yourself as the protagonist, or special for your talents - instead of becoming a chunibyo, he does get friends, confidence, and a personal sense of significance.
As a socially awkward outsider with a massive inferiority complex, I needed a message of: maybe working on yourself is more important than working on the things that make you special, more than I needed a reinforcement of "I need to be special to be accepted". Which makes Mob's arc not only poignant, but actionable. Because all the things he does are things you can do, yourself.
And after a few years of taking things day by day, as someone thoroughly mediocre, I've found friends, confidence, and purpose.

Thank you for taking the time to write this comment - I couldn't agree more and you poised each paragraph really well. Trying to see yourself as the protagonist in your own life can be really difficult when you see yourself as a side character, but it's definitely something to aim towards!

I love how we're not really led to believe this is a story about superpowers - we just get there because we've seen other stories with similar characteristics. And Mob challenging this comes as a breath of fresh air :)
Mob does get more powerful, but as you mentioned, in connection. And how beautifully balanced that this growth in connection is also a theme that shows up in so so so many Shonen, but as a subplot in support of the magical powers. This inversion here is fascinating!

I haven’t even seen Mob Psycho yet, but Mob reminds me so much of Tohru Honda in their unfaltering kindness and compassion, even if it’s seen as self-sacrificial. So often media portrays these characters as naive and easily taken advantage of, as if their actions need to have a tangible reward or they are worthless. That’s why I love it when we see a character overcome and succeed BECAUSE of their kindness, not despite of it, and we are shown that kindness and compassion and love are inherently good things we should pursue for our own moral growth.
    Anyway, amazing video as always!

I hadn't seen anyone compare him to tohru before but you're right, they succeeded in both of their stories by being characters who offered completely sincere and unfaltering kindness, its what allowed them to build up such strong support networks after all. I think Rei from March comes in like a lion is also an example of this, though his kindness might come in letting someone rely on him, series like this touch on how important kindness in whatever form is, and how it can save people even in the smallest of ways.

i don't think mob is on the spectrum. he was perfectly capable of showing emotions as a kid as seen in some flashbacks. the incident with ritsu made him fearful of his abilities. as mogami also said in the second season, the stronger you feel, the stronger are your psychic abilities. mob is a very feelsy compassionate and understanding character. he was scared of his abilities and shut himself off to the world leaving him somewhat behind. not autistic but rather traumatized. and with season 3 wrapping up his story i am confident to say that he really just had to accept himself as a whole.
he didn't "cure" his autism, he overcame his trauma

Although I also read Mob's outbursts as a possible coding for autism, it also can be read as how toxic masculinity urges to suppress emotions and to keep them bottled up, leaving many men unable to deal with them positively and finally exploding in such a way that can hurt those around them. It is very important that a shonen show portrays so many masculine characters that respect each other and encourage and nudge in a kind manner everyone around them to be better. The Body Improvement Club are not the only ones, but certainly the clearer example: they never mock Mob, they encourage him to achieve his goals once he decides to join them, they defend those who are weaker without being patronising, etc.

Similar to many, I found Mob Psycho 100 in a time where i was downtrodden and really needed the message it gave. I think it was about the time the World Domination Arc was wrapping up that I caught up to the scantilations and was eagerly awaiting every new chapter with bated breath. And then, when chapter 100 came (all sixty some odd pages of it) I felt...grief and elation in equal amounts. Mob had grown. The story was over. I would miss it, but it had irrevocably changed me as a person. It made me kinder to myself, more willing to treat me like i treat everyone else.
Then the anime came and, for all my gripes with changes in scenes and pacing and timing of omake chapters (mostly in the places where fights became more shounen and less about talking to the person you were fighting with to understand them better, though that was mostly Mogami and Toichirou) I was in a different place but I still needed that message. And, as an autistic person who had only just come to terms with that life-changing diagnosis, as well as someone learning to find comfort in my gender and sexuality (not new, but more resolute in their place in my life), I found comfort in Mob Psycho in a different medium. I loved the intricacies in the first seasons OP and how you could pinpoint later plot points in it. I devoured every episode and dragged my friends into it. All because the show might, at a glance, seem a comedy shounen (horror), but it's less about that and more about the characters.
One of the things I love best about Mob Psycho is that, while ONE's art might not be eye-catchingly pretty, he understands how manga works. His panel layout, story pacing, and intricate character moments sell the story where every other cookie-cutter isekai (which i do consume in the same way someone eats McDonald's, mind you) are more rock-solid, even if his style is easy to imitate for even an unconfidant artist. And that, in its own right, is a selling point! You don't have to be "good at art" to draw like ONE does and that's inspiring.
Idk i just wanted to say that, after the anime finale, I've watched as many essays on MP100 as i can and yours was lovely because it's true. Mob is kind and that's the point. That is his character, that is the driving force of the plot. A kind young man who changes as he changes others.

WHOA. i was so happy already that i discovered this amazing channel, and boom, a video on literally one of my fav shows ever. keep it up haha ! ! Last year, I had made my first video essay (it's still the only video I've made xd), which was about the supporting characters of March Comes in Like a Lion. After watching and rewatching the video a couple of times, I was really dissatisfied because, well, I'm too self critical and I overthink too much, which sucks. There were a couple of problems in the video, and it felt it didn't do my favourite anime of all time, any justice. But, your writing style reminds me of mine! and that gives me such confidence to try to do better, because I absolutely love your style, it is amazing

Honestly, Mob Psycho 100 is my top fav series 🥲 it touched me deeply. I had a character like him growing up that I used to cope with my life. So, you can imagine how much I cried when I saw Mob. 😂 I love him so much. I made it my mission to buy the manga and a figurine in the future. I relate to his struggle of wanting to stay kind even when my emotional outbursts hurt people and even though I struggle to connect with people in a traditional sense.

For me, a touching tribute to what I love so much about the show (other than the art styles employed and how much I admire how Reigen can be so carefree and exaggerate things without remorse!) . I don't really like many shounen series, so I was surprised I love Mob Psycho more than I expected; I see myself in him.

    • @linesinmotion
      @linesinmotion  2 роки тому +1

It's funny because Reigen's moments, like his "special attacks" (if you will 😂), are framed almost like how a normal superpower is. It's given an exaggeration and the titling of his attacks like you see in so many other shounen - and yet, Reigen is just some human guy haha.

I've been stalling this video until I put mine out! Finally watching it! Heard there was some pushbacks with the autistic interpretation of Mob? I mean there are definitely legs with what you brought up, and I find it interesting based on bits & pieces I know of autism, and even consider myself as having a spectrum of it. If anything thank you for bringing it up!
I actually interpret the percentile as him learning the nuances of the emotions, which the over-suppressions he did had numbed everything. And then meeting the fellas around him, he learns from them, and taught them back something as a fellow Esper. Give and Take. ONE has definitely delivered what he wanted with Mob.
