The words were written by Saint Dallan in the 6th century. He was a monk from County Cavan. Mary Byrne translated the beautiful words in 1905. Since 1919 it has been commonly sung to an Irish folk tune, noted as "Slane" in church hymnals.

David used instruments in his worship, so I am happy to see the Catholics now are using music more often. I touches my heart.
And what exactly do you mean by that? Liturgical music form and function means that the choice of instruments need to be appropriate as well. This particular form lends itself to this type of arrangement. Our primary liturgical musical forms are our chants, sacred polyphony, and hymnody - and in this particular order.

This is a lovely rendition of our ancient Irish hymn. The words (6th century) to the tune Slane, are for all peoples of all faiths or none.
As as I was playing this song and as I just sat back and just rest on the Lord's presence in the Lord's presence you know just lay back under his arm and just rest so to speak and they're worse the angels are in this room and and I feel them worshiping god with me the the angels and as I sway my hands about in the air and just smiling so I just feel God just looking at me and just smile you know God's presence is just in the are you just know God's presence in the air and you know when he's smiling and God is smiling cuz you're waving your hands about in the air like so and you're worshiping god with him and he worshiping because the presence will be so sweet to where you just want to just sit back and just put your arms around the father and just just hold Jesus and never let him go one day I'm going to jump up into the father's arms in person and write my whole entire body around Jesus and just hold him really really tight and if you ask when am I going to ever turn him loose never and I'll be like Jesus I'm sorry but this girl is never going to turn that's me I'm the girl who don't who's never going to turn to Jesus loose once I get what's a jump up and knock him over with with a big hug just wrap your whole entire body around and just around Jesus and just holding knock him over with the big the hug would be so big to where ...he fall back .. he falls back into the floor and he just bursted out laughing so hard everybody can hear Jesus laughing in heaven there's no way you can miss Jesus laughing in heaven is so totally awesome I just cannot wait to do that and then go to the garden patch grab a whole bunch of flowers run back really hard fast and say Jesus I am right here I have something for you and he'd be laughing with such joy just nodding his head and just throwing his head back and just laugh such. Joy and I'll be like throwing those flowers on on Jesus and make sure they land in his hair at his feet everywhere I can just do a ballet dance and just throw my head back and laugh like a child does when their dad is there that's the way that's the way it's going to be for me whenever I get get to heaven

As soon as you sang "Be Thou my Vision...", my whole body broke into chills! I'm Catholic, but I've never heard this song! LOVE IT!! Is it Irish? Can you please tell me a little bit about this song?? I would love it if we could sing this song at Mass. But alas, you know we Catholics aren't really known for our Praise & Worship...the only thing I miss about Protestantland---the Praise & Worship. It is an ancient Irish Catholic hymn.
You should have been around in the Catholic Charismatic heydays of the 60’s and 70’s! I loved the folk masses the Church had back then, with simply guitars and everyone singing. Phenomenal!!
This hymn is set to the traditional Irish folk song "Slane." In the Catholic Church, Slane is typically sung with "Lord of All Hopefulness" which was written by Jan Struther. (hymn #410 in the current Missal)
