    I met Kyle at an airport one time - he seemed like a nice guy. Has to be tough growing up the son of one of the best and trying to live up to the King's success. Just the same, it's an accomplishment just to race at the top level of Nascar. He actually was quite successful earlier on his carear. Losing his son was so sad for that family. I will say one thing - Kyle made money racing and he's making money as a broadcaster - good for him!

    See 11:15 for Kyle Petty reference (it's in good humor).
    Also: Why all the hating on Kyle Petty? Look up his stats on Wikipedia. He was a race winner and (almost) never had the best car. He was a legitimate title contender for a short time. He performed relatively better on the more technical tracks, indicating a decent level of natural ability. He was slow on the cookie-cutter tracks for sure... but if that's your thing then whatever. Remember that NASCAR talent is drawn from a huge population and is (or was) quite competitive back in it's heyday. A lot of these drivers could have been competitive in F1 had they been groomed the same as the typical 'go-cart brat' we see today. If you run top 20 in a Nascar event circa 1995 - 2005 you were pretty damn good behind the wheel. Richard made sure his son would have to earn his way into NASCAR. Many people don't know anything about Kyle's career. He drove for the Wood Brother's in the 80's when they were struggling and performed competitively (pretty much matched Dale Jarrett's performance with the same team). He helped turn Sabco racing into a competitive team. They fell off later on. Kyle was competing for (occasional) race wins up until 1997, and competing for top tens up until 2006. He was juggling lots of stuff outside of racing including running the team itself, charity stuff, and some tragic life events as well. He kept the team going through some tough sh*t.
    Personally, I enjoyed watching Kyle white-knuckle his way to an 8th-place finish at Bristol in 2005 rather than seeing some go-kart brat with a team whose budget was 10x Kyle's compete for race wins. I'd rather see drivers with personalities race even if they aren't competing for wins week in and week out. I like seeing an old-timer mix it up with the young guns; what other sport could you see different eras of drivers compete with one another?

    Dale Inman was an innovator yes. Petty's oversized engines were built by brother Maurice. Chad Knaus is a huge cheater and innovator dude. Illegal shock gaskets in 2005 at Dover, a device on the rear window to lower the window at Daytona in 2006, illegal fender modifications at Sonoma in 2007, etc. Those three busts right there were for blatant violations of the rules. Now his chassis setups that helped skew the rear end were pure innovation. He's brilliant, but he cheats too.

    I somewhat agree with you, with a few exceptions. 2006 wouldve been impossible without the chase. They simply found gold late in the season. 2007 also wouldve been hard because Gordon had a historically amazing season. Like 30 top 10s or something. 2008-2010 couldve been possible.

  • @kornnut43
    @kornnut43 11 років тому +1

    Right, but under the old system, all the drivers chasing Jeff, Carl and Harvick would have raced differently... it's fun to debate "what ifs", but at the end of the day, you can't really do that with the Chase\Non-Chase argument.

    It would only be possible on road courses. Ovals would be too dangerous. Cars are too heavy with a higher center of gravity...Cars would lose grip at higher speeds and whipsaw into the walls...NNS has a program to use wets at road courses. Only used them once in a race I believe. They had to add windshield wipers to the cars...

    You have a good point there. The crew chief has a lot to do with how a driver performs. Gordon had Everham, Stewart had zippadeli. However Knaus doesn't drive those cars. And both you and i know, nascar cars are as close to equal as ever especially with the gen 6 just coming out. The thing that impresses me is how Jimmie has won championships in so many different cars. Gen 4. 07 COT. COT. COT with spoiler. And now with the gen 6 he is dominating.

    With Gen 6 the train is back and turned exciting tantric racing where pairs of cars were fighting each into watch the same two lines of cars following each other around and around. This is compounded by the point system that is in place. So that most newer drivers are content with a top ten finish so they might have a shot at the chase instead of pulling out of line and going foe the win.

      @JTeam45 10 років тому

      Danica is only in her 2nd year of NASCAR... Kyle Petty had many more years to do better. People are really only putting Danica under a microscope because she's a woman. Also, Danica has won a championship on another major circuit outside of NASCAR, making her better than Kyle Petty by default anyways.

    • @joshdupkoski437
      @joshdupkoski437 10 років тому +4

      "People are really only putting Danica under a microscope because she's a woman"
      Funny, and people did the same thing with Kyle Petty, simply because he was the son and grandson of two of the best drivers in Nascar's history. With a little luck, he'd have had the opportunity to win the title in 92, and still did have a shot at it going into the last race that year.
      Danica, to be fair, like you said, is under a microscope because she's a woman, but it doesn't take a genius to see that she isn't even on the same level as Kyle Petty. It might be her second year, but I can promise this year will be more of the same "Danica Patrick in the wall". Plus, from looking at her stats, please do tell which championship she won, because I'm not seeing anywhere where she has won one.
      Since we're being fair here, to be honest, I don't think Kyle had anything left after his son died in 2000. You can tell by his stats and his finishes after that that everything was just going downhill after that.
      Anyone that claims that Danica Patrick is better than Kyle Petty, clearly doesn't know anything about racing. Kyle has more wins than her, and has more finishes better than her. The biggest thing Danica has is that she has marketing appeal. That's really about it. She does have talent, I'll give her that. Unfortunately,it takes more than talent to be successful. When she does more than Kyle Petty, then we can talk about her being better than him. Until then, fact is, she isn't.

      "doesn't know anything about racing..." excuse me? I've been watching racing for my entire life and race cars at the local dirt track so, let's discard that little comment. You really haven't given her any time to develop anything in the league, yet you're treating her like someone who has been in NASCAR for as long as everyone else. Being fair my foot.

    Oh I absolutely agree. Jimmie will never be comparable to Petty or Earnhardt because of the system he won under. Being good in the last 10 races should not a champion make. He definitely would have won some championships, but again, different systems and all that, so it's impossible to tell just how many he would have won. I surmise it would be between 2-3 like you suggested because he was dominate for the whole season in the first 3 championships that he won. Same can't be said for the last 2.

    That's exactly what I tell everyone! It would have been no problem to add the new safety features to the Gen 4 and we'd still have the great looking cars and the great racing. I can't believe how many people thought the Gen 6 was actually closer to a "stock" car. People really are gullible.

    They're a step in the right direction, but the Gen 4 cars were built with speed in mind. The Gen 6 cars aren't much different from the COT in truth. The Chassis is the same, just with a different skin. I admired the old car, and the technological improvements in aerodynamics. The old car was plenty safe as it was. They could've added all the safety to the gen 4 cars anyways. Besides they just looked badass!

    I think people say the "he wouldn't have won if it wasn't for the chase" for one reason that I notice. It's to keep Jimmie Johnson from being over exaggerated...Which I do agree on to some point he's good but he isn't that good. I do still believe he'd have maybe 2 or 3 even if they used a different strategy for the season if the chase wasn't there.

    Speed doesn't mean the racing is better, a lot of the time it actually makes it worse. NASCAR easily had its best racing in the very late 90s and early 2000s and speeds were much less than what they are now. The faster the car = more need for clean air.

    The Keselowski and Stewart part was a joke, 'cause you said "Don't hate the 48 for winning- hate everyone else for not stepping up. I know I kinda do." But yeah, that battle wouldn't have been so bad if Jimmie didn't decide to be a little baby and take a swing at his own car owner. I don't think he even understands that if he wasn't careful, he could've taken two great racecars out.

    Not exactly. These guys race a little differently under the Chase format than they did the season-long format. They are much more conservative under the Chase format for fear of losing large chunks of points. Under the season long format, they were much more aggressive because they had all season to accumulate points. It's impossible to say who would have won the championships had the Chase not been implemented. You can't just swap points systems and say so-and-so would have won the championship

    I f'n hate this argument. Had there been no Chase, drivers would have raced with a completely different mindset throughout the course of the 36-race season. It's a different day and age in the sport.
    Only in the last few years have teams even come close to the 48. I'm not a fan of theirs, but they set the bar - everyone else had to scramble to catch up, and they finally have done that.
    Don't hate the 48 for winning - hate everyone else for not being able to step up. I know I kinda do. lol

    Well it clearly doesn't race like it at all from watching it.
    They have a huge spoiler creating way too much rear downforce, a huge front splitter paired with huge rear quarter panels making clean air mean way too much and a dumb shark fin which pretty much works like a driving assist.
    Pretty big differences compared to the old car and gen6, and not good ones at that.

    I remember this race well...Gordon, Casey Mears, and Mark Martin chose to go off-cycle to the rest of the field. Gordon is also lucky that the rain ended what ended up being the Pocono 265, because he had a problem under the hood that would have ended his day had the race restarted.
