this engine is amazingly quiet. Is that because the turbo is not hooked up?

    Opinions about this engine??

I realize that I am replying a year later, but I'll give my opinion anyway. I have a 3116 in a generator. It has been highly reliable and trouble free. It is economical on fuel costs, and it doesn't blow a lot of smoke. It is true that special tools are needed to synchronize the fuel control racks, and to service the copper injector cups if the injectors are removed. However, it usually is not necessary to remove the injectors or change the rack settings. Beside changing the fluids and filters, the only maintenance that needs to be done on a 3116 is to periodically set the valve lash and the injector timing. To set the injector timing takes a dial gauge, but it is not hard to do. My one recommendation is to add some lubricant or fuel treatment to your fuel. I live in California, and the low Sulphur CARB (California Air Resources Board) diesel fuel here has very poor lubricating properties and causes rapid wear on the fuel lift pump and injectors in a Cat 3116. One final item to mention about a 3116 is that it does not have cylinder liners, so it can not be rebuilt in frame. But any automotive machine shop can install sleeves in the block. I actually like the 3116 better than the later 3126 or C7 because the 3116 is all mechanical and doesn't need a high pressure oil pump or ECU.

@@frazzledude I appreciate your comment, one more question what kind of lubricant can I put on the fuel tank???

@@emersonbarahona579 If it is for a 3116 in a truck and you are in the USA I recommend Howe’s or Stanadyne. Marvel Mystery Oil also has good lubricating properties and does a good job cleaning the fuel system. I also have an old Ford pickup truck with a 7.3 IDI Diesel engine, along with my generator. So what I do is I buy a case of inexpensive motor oil and I mix it 1 quart to 5 gallons of diesel fuel. When the tank in my truck starts to get low I pump 5 gallons of fuel out of my generator into my truck and replace it by pouring 5 gallons of fresh fuel into the generator. That way, my truck and my generator always have reasonably new fuel in the tank.

WITHOUT THE TURBO THE ENGINE SHOULD SMOKE RODS OF COAL.
