How To Sew Ribbons and Elastics on Your Pointe Shoes | Lazy Dancer Tips

- In this video I will show you a couple of ways to sew your elastics
the criss cross and the loop around the ankle. I have tried them both, each method are very valid, again, it always depends from your shoe, ankle and strength. I personally prefer the criss cross option as it gives me extra support on the shoe.
There a various ways a dancer prepares her shoes. The more you dance the more personal a pointe shoe becomes. From sewing ribbons to breaking them in.
Ribbons are very personal too , more forward, back, more angled, less angled , everyone has got a different ritual.
There are different types of ribbons too nowadays , I absolutely love the ones with the elastic in the middle.
They didn't exist when I started ballet. When I discovered them they changed my life and help me out with a chronic ankle injury that I had for the past 10 years. The ribbons are strong but they have a give, which helps a great deal with the natural movement of the ankle and activation of the right muscle without restraining too much.
Have Fun!

Oh My gosh! You are a life saver! I needed these for practice today, and I hadn't sewn on the ribbons yet, so I was totally panicking, then I watched your (super-helpful) video and finished sewing them just in time. Thanks a million! :D
Wooooohooo!!! You are very welcome !!!!!! Kissy Ciao Alessia
For those who aren't sure with burning or are scared to do it, you can always just use clear nail polish to prevent the ribbons from fraying :)
Thank you so much for helping when i saw the video i was kinda scared to try it so i didin’t even do it so then i saw your comment and it worked! Thanks!
Omg!! Seriously??? All this time ive been turning on the stove and burning them 😨💀
@@ily-ob9dpyou should use a LIGHTER not the stove if you use the stove they will obviously burn

Now, gotta find ribbon and figure out how to dye 'em. Shame nothings open at this hour. Suppose beet juice would work? 🤷♀️🤣❤️🇨🇦

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!! THIS REALLY HELPED ME!
Yeeeeey :D:D:D
Instead of doing 4 ribbons, I like to do one on each foot that’s double the size and goes in the middle also. It helps with your pointe by forcing you to pointe when you go up.
omgosh you helped me so much thank you
:D
which side of the ribbon should be in contact with my ankle? my stretch ribbon has a shiny side and a rough side and I'm not sure which way I should sew it on
I got my pointe ballet shoes today Thank you for teaching v me how to tie them
I think I'm in love with how you say "Put them on the side."
So helpful just got my demi pointe shoes and I had no clue
How are you seeing your shoes so easily, I am trying to see mine but it is to hard for me to pull the needle through 😔
Come farei senza di te? Very helpful!! Thank you sooo much! (Ribbonssss!)
ahahah Carinaaaa! :D Bacioni Alessia
about to pick up my first pair of pointe shoes rn. i have to have them sewed in 3 hours bc that’s when class starts. wish me luck 😣
I was always under the impression that ribbons were intended to pull the arch of the shoe to support the arch of your foot. Is there any reason why you sew the ribbons so far up the shoe and not where the arch is?
Thank you I am getting my pointe shoes in two days and get stressed about sewing
Enjoy!!! :D:D:D
my shoe only came with one elastic, what do i do? i dont know if im supossed to cut the elastic cuz hes bigger than yours in the video, or if it was an error
Hey, they gave me wide and long elastics, should I cut it in half for width and just trim off the edges till it’s short enough?
My mom wants to sew my pony shoes but she wants someone who has done this before to do it for my first pair.
So the thing is my frost pair they sewed them a week later they ribbon snapped so I will learn for my second but I’m going to wait so I do t have to get a new pair by the show 😊
Ahh I have to sew my shoes before tmrw for the first time and this helped so muchhh ty ❤️❤️❤️ I’m prob gonna flop anyway though knowing me

Do you have to burn the edges of the elastic too?
thanks so much ur a life saver, one question about the elastics though, can i do both options on my shoes because I really want them to be secure, but im not sure if there is anything wrong with it
+Lazy Dancer Tips , do you have to sew the elastic around your ankle or can you sew it kind of in the same place as the ribbon and if so where would you put the ribbon higher or lower than the elastic😘😘😘👯👯
Hi Ladies, thanks you for your message. In This video as you can see i have includes 2 versions of sewing elastics, you will found what works for you as soon as you try your shoes on. It doesn't really matter where ribbons and elastics are sewn, as long as they are comfortable for you. Always measure your elastic around your ankle so it won't be too tight or too lose. All the best, Ciao Alessia :)
thanks a lot for this helpful video! Are you italian?
Chiara non c'e di che! Certo sono italiana ! :D Ciao Alessia :)
Should the ribbons be shiny side up?
thanks,
+Zhenia Verbovskaya in theory yes although I find that non shiny ribbons look better as they blend with tights and/skin;) ciao :)
Zheniya Verbovskaya Yes. :)
Quick question when you see your ribbon/ elastics do you go thro all the the fabric (like you can see a sticks from the outside) or do you only go thro the first layer of your pointe shoes?
U have to go through all the layers but using the correct color and not to thick of a thread that it's viable 😋
But when sewing it to the back u only go through the first layer at the back
I’m currently debating wether to sow on my ribbons or not because I did get told when buying my point shoes that different studios will have you sow them on in different places
Edit: I’m 11 and don’t know how to sow
What do you prefer, the loop or cris cross? I'm about to start at pointe in the first time, don't know everything yet :)
She said she preferred the criss cross for more support.
They didn’t give me enough ribbon. I cut them and one was way shorter than the other three. HELP!!!!
Hi - any advice for ribbon that is baggy around front of foot but stays (too) tight around ankle? I was going to buy the ribbon with the built in elastic but I had already sewn the regular satin ribbon on and they just are super baggy. I sewed them on an angle too.
Almost sounds like too much or not enough of an angle. Once you know where you're going to place it, slip your foot in to give you the idea of the exact angle maybe?
Also, tying them on when the foot is 50% flexed helps get the right tightness on the foot.
It helped a lot and my mum was easily sewing them!
Hi Alessia. Could you make a video about pirouettes on pointe shoes? (I adore bloch too
Hi Viky, sure thing! What exactly do you need to improve? :) Ciao Alessia
when I did pirouettes (because I ve stopped ballet unfortunately, but I am abt to restart soon ;) I felt that I d hope a bit too much to get in releve, and for the same reason I felt unsafe when closing 5th at the end, a little awkward and prone to fall. I ve been trained Vaganova technique and RAD, and both Schools insist to jump into releve, especially in pointe.
I have a question, so the drawstrings on pointe shoes, I've seen a lot of professionals not really have them, do they cut the drawstrings elastics off or tuck them in? I find them very annoying on flat balls shoes (I'm not en pointe yet but in a few months I might be!!)
Jennifer Dutka For me, I usually cut them. I haven't really seen anyone tuck them in, so i'm pretty sure they just cut them.
Is there a problem if I cut the ribbons not with the size of my arm?
not really , it's just to give you a rough idea of length. You don't want to cut them too short and not being able to wrap them around your ankle :) Ciao Alessia
I love bloch point shoes!!!!
Sophia Zabel u r not alone lmao
Please do food related or your diet video thank you😊
I will Luna! Thank you lots! Ciao Alessia :D
Hey, I was wondering, my left foot is weaker than my right, so my right shoe is softer than my left, should I swap so I use the softer shoe on my left to prolong their life or should I keep my left shoe harder to support its weaknesses?
Hi Ursula , personally I always found that swapping shoes around felt like wearing underpants back to front, LOL. Let's get serious now! Obviously you have noticed that your left is weaker than your right, and it's something that shouldn't be overlooked. You must try to strengthen that foot asap before an injury happens. Every time you do a strengthening exercise make sure you always do 4 or 5 rep more on the weaker side, otherwise your strongest side will get stronger and your weaker one won't improve! There isn't much you can do about the shoes, everyone has got one that will mush quicker than the other. You can try to prolong their life by adding glue and water and letting it dry overnight. I think, for now, for you it's good to see how your shoes are braking so that you can work on your muscles. You should be able to sustain yourself, don't let the shoe do all the work for you! Let me know how it goes ! Ciao Alessia
Thank you so much! I'll try that, I've been doing rises and theraband exercises to help, I'll try working through my left shoe more as well
Try the strengthening exercises i have for lower legs and feet , do them everyday, concentrate on all the parts of the foot, toes included, remember you are standing on those tiny-winy platforms! :D
Which is best? Criss cross or around the ankle? x
Chelsea Ll she said criss cross gives more support
You try what you like best, It's such a personal thing that only you can decide :) Love
Alessia
I’m a nanny of a little ballerina 😊 and I’ve always wondered why they don’t just already come how they are to be used… why don’t the stretch out the shoes and have the ribbons sewed on beforehand? I just don’t get it😅
When you sewed all the way through the shoe to the satin and didn't just sew to the lining 😫😥😔 NOOOOO! That makes me die inside a little bit. The outside of the shoe should remain untouched.
Danielle Hanson you do realize that you won't be able to notice anything from like 2 feet away right?
Some pointe shoes don’t even have linings, like Gaynor Minden.
That's a rule at my studio
“Try not the burn the house down, mom wouldn’t be happy” 😂😂😂😂
ahahahahha had to prevent disasters from happening!!! 😂😂😂
Why did you go right through the satin eeekkkk
I just got my first pair and already think i screwed them up 😅😭
I LOVE IT
Hi Alessia. I asked this question before other ballet bloggers' videos but I have no answer still from them... I had last times some ballet classes on pointe finally, but I have no idea how I should lift up myself on one leg in pointe shoes (eleve) (not all girls are doing this class on pointe shoes so I haven't seen the rest)?! Or maybe I misunderstood something (I live abroad and class is in foreign language). I have no problem with my feet strength or balance but really I don't know what to do now. I tried to find on internet something about it (one leg eleve in pointe shoes) but I have nothing. If something like this exists, how I should work to lift myself without plie (on both legs it's not a problem of course)? I work on my feet, ankles and calves strength, with you, with other bloggers, by myself at the gym... but I don't feel the difference at all. Please help:(
Hi Magda! Eleves on one foot are not easy, but i'm sure you will get there soon. Start with doing them parallel, in front of the barre, make sure you are not sitting on your supporting leg. Go through your demi-pointe but don't get stuck there or you'll lose the momentum to go to full pointe. For now help yourself with your hands on the barre, you might feel that you'll hop up rather that smoothly rise, then bit by bit, start with using only four or two fingers on the barre, therefore the back of your legs, bum and abs will work more and more and your metatarsal will gain more strenght.
Let me know how you get on! Ciao Alessia :)
I’m not even here for point shoes. My ballet slippers elastic is too tight and I have to put on a longer elastic haha
I only need one loop of the elastics, so, we’re do I put the ribbon? You only demonstrated were to sew on the ribbons with the cross elastic.
help my elastic isnt cut yet and i dont know if i have enough to crisscross on both feet. what should i do?
I didn't find this useful the tip for cutting the ribbon at around arms length didn't fit for me, so I unfortunately have to buy new ribbon
Hello :) thank you for your videos! I have a question that may sound stupid: i’m starting on pointe. I wantex to know if it is a good idea or if its useful to cut the satin at the top of the box of my pointe shoes for a better grip. I’m not very strong yet and struggle with échappés so would that be bad? Thank you! :)
I’d say bad idea lol
@@viola4825 thanks :)
