I have used my own analog TV transmitter for years sending TV signals to different parts of my home and garage. They were quite easy to find at one time.
You do have to be careful since there are FCC restrictions about transmitters and how powerful they can be. Ham radio operators have to deal with them all the time. You need to get a license for higher power transmitters.

HetbTyler, I own a MaGica USB-C dongle for my Android phone that works really well... The kit comes with mini rabbit ears and I purchased a micro coax adapter to connect to my master antenna. It uses the PadTv app and I have all of my digital channel available to me (great tuner). It's perfect during power outages which are frequent here in Puerto Rico 🌴. There are many times when the outages are short-term and instead of firing up the generator, I can sit back relax and watch a little TV. I have also used it when waiting in the car for loved ones in a poor cell signal area with no internet access. As always thank you for your channel content.
I like retro gaming, so whenever I travel I bring a small 5" CRT, but I've also used it with my blonder tongue modulator and a converter box to be able to watch TV anywhere in the house!
I use to have something similar to this. When I'd take road trips with my college guy friends and I through Northern Wisconsin, Minnesota and Canada- I would always have this on in the car and try to scan for stations in the area.
I had a portable LCD TV my MIL gave me as a Christmas gift. I never realized how much I would use it. It was a great device, especially as a passenger in a car on a trip. Nowadays, you can't use a portable TV, really. Besides the antennas not being good enough, if you are moving at all, you lose the picture entirely. It stinks!
I had a TV like that that I got in the US forces in Germany. It had NTSC, PAL and PAL UK. I took it everywhere. It was fun watching TV in several countries, and allowed me to escape boredom on deployments.
My mother had a small LCD pocket television that had a mirror in it that she used to watch All My Children while at work at her office in the daytime. It was Citizen brand, I think.
My Dad used to have one of these. I had my Nintendo hooked up to it with an adapter lol. It actually worked pretty well. These things were so well made, my dad's never stopped working. But we got rid of because of the digital switch over. I wish I hadn't of gotten rid of it.
I can directly relate to this story. I have the exact same model portable TV. I was using it to watch the very last of the analog TV broadcasts while in a hotel room in Seattle, WA when the broadcast went to snow. That was back in the summer of 2009.
I make an FM transmitter for audio and put a video signal into it and got it to broadcast on channel 13 It transmitted about 300' too. It only worked in black and white.
I still have one of these TV's too! Manufacture date says Oct '83, and mine is a TV only (no radio) but still a Panasonic. After watching the video, I checked it -- No analog here! Tucked away somewhere - I actually have another similar size TV, which I got at Sears (in the 80's). I think it's called "The Binoc" since it has rounded corners like a pair of binoculars.

He was completely helpful in my search for an antenna and he also sent me names and phone numbers in my area for sales and install. And that's saying something since Iive in a very rural place! you cant go wrong it was the best $40 I ever spent!
I made my own transmitter in high school, so I could watch people play with the Nintendo system without knowledge. If they tried to disable it, they'd lose it too, as it was broadcasted even to the TV played on. Signal could travel about 60 feet easily, maybe 100 or so with color. I even have a DIY video on making one, and to my surprise how using a roof antenna made it go waaay too far. :) With rabbit ears, it didn't get very far.
I had a small tv like yours. Back in the early 80's I traveled to Europe with it and was at hotel in Avranches, Fr and watched the BBC from the Jersey Islands. Great find, I still have it, however, it would not work in France because, the French would broadcast TV in the same system as the USSR. It worked in Belgium, Holland, Italy and Gibraltar. but not in France. So like that!
The whole PAL, NTSC and SECAM compatibility scenario. France have of course changed to PAL in more recent times, but I was surprised to hear SECAM still exists in some countries.

They were a godsend during hurricane season ! Had a portable b&w tv with am/fm that ran on d-cell batteries or the ac adapter . Had an RCA brand converter to use on it . But it was useless when the power was out ! The wife threw the TV away ... but I hid the converter (got 2 if them stashed) from her , lol !
I was thinking about your channel today. I was looking into ATSC 3.0 broadcasts in my area. It looks like the model will be for channels in a market to cooperate, take over a signal and broadcast in ATSC 3.0 on it (called a "lighthouse"). That way they can get the clock started on their 5 year transition requirement. It really is the only option because there isn't any extra bandwidth for them to use during transition. This also means 4K will have to wait for 5 years as well, since the "lighthouse" is limited because it is being overloaded.

Very interested in seeing your video about your "private broadcasting". Also, if you watch the old sci-fi TV show Space:1999. Their communication device had a small 1 inch screen that really worked. In the TV show the back of the device ended with tube that was about 4" long. But in reality that was actually a cable that brought in the signal. Check it out....
Didn't Sony come out with the Watchmen? Which was even smaller than your Panasonic? The Sony had a CRT with a bent neck to make it fit in a Palm sized package. Check it out. I'm sure you could find info on it. Sony Watchman.
This is far from the smallest CRT in consumer and especially professional tech, CRTs less than half the size of this were used as viewfinders. There were even some rare color ones that were less than half the size, the color ones only used a single electron gun too which is amazing engineering since you normally need one per color (3).
@@pamm8608 CRT stands for Cathode Ray Tube, like LCDs and OLEDS, they were used in much more than just TVs. I'm talking about the teeny tiny CRTs used as electronic viewfinders in video cameras from the 80s and 90s.

It's true that viewfinder CRTs are smaller but they weren't able to pick up television broadcasts with an antenna. They were just basically video monitors.
I had some of these small tv's, such as the small B&W Sony Watchman in the 1980's and the small flat-screen LCD color TV from Casio among the many out there. I have the 4.3 inch color LCD HDTV, which is nice and receives some OTA TV, with it's antenna, but still works best with an adapter cable to F type for an external antenna for scanning the channels and full reception like a home TV. A friend who is in the broadcasting field said that analog TV was so robust to receive. I once had the Analog TV transmitter kit from the now defunct Ramsey Electronics, in Victor NY, near Rochester, NY. It was adjustable with a free wheeling oscillator that could be tuned to transmit on the low VHF channels, 2-6. You could input sources to transmit such as a DVD player or VCR. Also, those earlier analog tv's like I saw in Radio Shack could still tune up to Channel 83, before the cut back in channels for other transmitters such as 800 MHz, one could tune in an analog cell conversation on the TV tuner, until it beeped as the cell site switched the call to another site, then whereby you lost the conversation. The ECPA Act of 1987 blocked scanners and receivers from listening to analog calls. Then when cell phones 📵 went digital it became nearly impossible to receive them.
Looking forward to seeing your TV transmitter in action. I have one that is a super powerful RF modulator used to sent feeds to multiple rooms in hotel. Putting an antenna on the RF out gives it a strong enough signal to be able to receive the channel throughout the house on an old analog tv. The thing is big an cost a decent amount of money. I need to get an antenna analyzer to tune the antenna length on it, but it works. I'm super curious to see what you come up with! I can't wait!

Cool, did you hook an antenna up to the channel 3/4 RF out on a TV box? I remember trying this but I needed two inline coax amps to make the signal go more than a few feet!
Panasonic did make a CRT B&W TV around 1970. It had a 1” screen with a magnifying glass in front. It was featured on an early episode of the sitcom All in the Family.
A similar tv was featured on All in the family in early 70s,Archie on tv the best all in family episode,this episode reminds me of a Gomer Pyle episode St.carter on tv,that's a funny one to.
There used to be a Sanyo TV/clock radio like that. I think it was the TPM-2175 or similar. I saw it in electronic shop windows when I visited the USA in 1981. Also in Hong Kong a year later.
That may be the smallest CRT but it's not the smallest TV. I have a Casio LCD Pocketvision. I've had it since 1985. It fits in a small shirt pocket comfortably and has a removable back light which makes it even smaller. The screen size is 2.3 inches. I used it all the time back years ago. This was well before the internet. It still works. I also have a larger Casio color model.
I remember back in the 1980s having AM/FM radios that would also tune in to TV frequencies. I used to listen to NFL football games in the garage on CBS on Sundays. Then we got a portable black and white tv set. I ran a speaker wire up in the roof joists with a coat hanger for an antenna. Not very effective 😂
Thank you for being one of the last CRT fans out there. I have the very same TV along with a host of others. Always been a miniature gadgets guy with TV being number one on my list. I can hook a couple of them up to cable to watch and enjoy them but this one doesn't have an external antenna jack. Any suggestions? Did you know that you can make a very low power analog tv stations with a antenna booster a antenna and a RF modulator (a vcr will do as a ref modulator)
In Europe there are some pocket TVs with LCD screens for the DVB-T standard, also there are smartphone dongles for off-air TV reception. Is that not a thing in the US? Does the ATSC standard not allow for such devices?
Portable TV’s still exist. They are called smart phones. That being said I do miss the name Panasonic on Televisions sold in the USA. It was always my favorite brand. Although they are just starting up again with very high priced OLED TVs. It will be nice when they start selling affordable TVs again.

Batteries that old would likely leak now. It's rare for any old device to have original batteries, even if they are rechargeable, since they don't last.

World's smallest CRT - imagine trying to play light-gun videogames on this, such as Duck Hunt (NES) or Point Blank (PS1). The downfall of the TFT/flat screen, preventing the momentary flashes that allows light-guns to work.

Great, now all you need is an old VCR or VHS camcorder, or even an analog DVD player. I even have an HDMI to video and analog audio converter. I can enjoy analog anytime. All I need is the transmitter. 100 Watts on low VHF should do it.
Do you have knowledge about how to better deal with dish companies when you make the decision to cut the cord & end service with them? I've heard they will put you on hold or find reason to bill you for cancelling even if you're not under contract any longer. Idk if there is tips to making it as painless as possible.
Making an analogue TV station is easy use an old VCR that has av inputs and you feed a stb into it as a signal source. Then set the rf modulator to whatever output channel you want , then you will need to either make a new coax with the rf plug on the end or a converter plug to plug to the broadcast antenna. Yes use your old rabbit ears if you like.of course don't hook it up to a distribution amp and high antenna as that would be very very naughty and get you in trouble!
Now I use my phone and watch UA-cam anywhere and sort of kind of emulate the experience of a portable analog TV. Not the same. No personal experience of a properly portable set, though. I was born in 1961. Family didn’t get a color TV until 1970 and even that was on only 3 or 4 hours most days. In some ways I’m living in a new world, in others it’s pretty much the same.
The thing that was better about analog was that as a signal got worse it just added noise. Applies the radio as well. I wonder what the equivalent bit rate of a TV signal would be. We know it's 525 lines. What's the realistic estimate on horizontal resolution? What's the realistic estimate on bit depth? Is analog color TV 4:2:0 or 4:4:4?
At some point it will be in phones. I'd say it already would be if not for the ATSC/DVB-T split here and EU. Range is likely going to be poor, though unless they can figure out an antenna feed.

If you connect the copper center wire from something like a VCR or analog cable directly to the antenna you can get a picture.

I have two different Sony Watchman portable TV’s that are also very tiny. Used to take them with me all the time when I traveled.
The Sinclair Microvision was the smallest and ran of the battery found in the film cartridge for a SX70 super swinger.

It fits in a small shirt pocket comfortably and has a removable back light which makes it even smaller. The screen size is 2.3 inches. I used it all the time back years ago. This was well before the internet. It still works. I also have a larger Casio color model.
I remember back in the 1980s having AM/FM radios that would also tune in to TV frequencies. I used to listen to NFL football games in the garage on CBS on Sundays. Then we got a portable black and white tv set. I ran a speaker wire up in the roof joists with a coat hanger for an antenna. Not very effective 😂

Thank you for being one of the last CRT fans out there. I have the very same TV along with a host of others. Always been a miniature gadgets guy with TV being number one on my list. I can hook a couple of them up to cable to watch and enjoy them but this one doesn't have an external antenna jack. Any suggestions? Did you know that you can make a very low power analog tv stations with a antenna booster a antenna and a RF modulator (a vcr will do as a ref modulator)
In Europe there are some pocket TVs with LCD screens for the DVB-T standard, also there are smartphone dongles for off-air TV reception. Is that not a thing in the US? Does the ATSC standard not allow for such devices?
Portable TV’s still exist. They are called smart phones. That being said I do miss the name Panasonic on Televisions sold in the USA. It was always my favorite brand. Although they are just starting up again with very high priced OLED TVs. It will be nice when they start selling affordable TVs again.

Batteries that old would likely leak now. It's rare for any old device to have original batteries, even if they are rechargeable, since they don't last.
@@writerpatrick I have an old Compaq 486 laptop from 90 or 91 and it's nicad pack hasn't leaked and still holds a 20 minute charge. I know his tv is much older but stranger things have happened.
World's smallest CRT - imagine trying to play light-gun videogames on this, such as Duck Hunt (NES) or Point Blank (PS1). The downfall of the TFT/flat screen, preventing the momentary flashes that allows light-guns to work.

You can actually make your own with a 0.5” crt from a camera viewfinder. Btw, that tv is made from crt from earlier video cameras

Great, now all you need is an old VCR or VHS camcorder, or even an analog DVD player. I even have an HDMI to video and analog audio converter. I can enjoy analog anytime. All I need is the transmitter. 100 Watts on low VHF should do it.
Do you have knowledge about how to better deal with dish companies when you make the decision to cut the cord & end service with them? I've heard they will put you on hold or find reason to bill you for cancelling even if you're not under contract any longer. Idk if there is tips to making it as painless as possible.

Making an analogue TV station is easy use an old VCR that has av inputs and you feed a stb into it as a signal source. Then set the rf modulator to whatever output channel you want , then you will need to either make a new coax with the rf plug on the end or a converter plug to plug to the broadcast antenna. Yes use your old rabbit ears if you like.of course don't hook it up to a distribution amp and high antenna as that would be very very naughty and get you in trouble!
I might just have to join the revolution and start my own station. Wishful thinking, though.

Now I use my phone and watch UA-cam anywhere and sort of kind of emulate the experience of a portable analog TV. Not the same. No personal experience of a properly portable set, though.
I was born in 1961. Family didn’t get a color TV until 1970 and even that was on only 3 or 4 hours most days. In some ways I’m living in a new world, in others it’s pretty much the same.
The thing that was better about analog was that as a signal got worse it just added noise. Applies the radio as well. I wonder what the equivalent bit rate of a TV signal would be. We know it's 525 lines. What's the realistic estimate on horizontal resolution? What's the realistic estimate on bit depth? Is analog color TV 4:2:0 or 4:4:4?

At some point it will be in phones. I'd say it already would be if not for the ATSC/DVB-T split here and EU. Range is likely going to be poor, though unless they can figure out an antenna feed.
