I gotta say that after about 20 years later, I’m glad that I got proved wrong and realize that it is possible to get the Ultimate Armor in Dragoon’s stage.
@superflashxmedia7706 you use a code and the first upgrade you go to will turn you into ultimate armor. usually the legs is the one people go to cause it's easier
Dr Light was like: X this is an armor upgrade to boost your…. Wait….. what the hell X… this capsule was hidden safety for only your arm upgrades can bypass them. How did you get in??? X: who gives a f, just give me the fkin upgrades….
I like the fact that they have sprite for X with only the body armor part despite it being almost impossible to get it without the buster armor upgrade, that's some quality work right there.
Pretty sure that they don't have individual sprites for each combination. Each piece of armor is overlayed on top of X and can be turned on and off individually.
@@mengo329 I don't think a ps1 for 1997 have that kind of tech, beside I have seen people who work on the same engine creating different sprite sheet for each part of the armor and their animation.
@@acidgolem2132 Considering the PS1 could render texture-mapped 3D areas, a second object on top of X isn't much of a tall order. Megaman X1,2, and 3 did this too, but with only the head, arm and leg parts being overlays and the body parts being a full sprite swap like you'd assume. They stopped doing it for X5 and X6 because it's really hard to figure out all the sprites for 4 sets of armors with their unique abilities.
To further my theory, unused sprites of Armorless X in the Shadow Armor's ceiling cling and Blade Armor's mach dash poses have been found, implying they wanted to try using the overlay method again to let you use partial armor sets but plans of course fell through. Also remember how if you play as Zero in Megaman X5's intro stage, X will be wounded wearing his fourth armor? The armor parts are overlayed on top of him there too. You can go into the game's files and see that he's actually completely sprited under the armor in that position, although lacking in detail
@@mengo329 And of course the Xtreme games went with the option of only changing X's sprite once you have the full set, as the GB and GBC shared the NES' "8 sprites per scanline" limitation which made the overlay method impractical at best.

It is neat, but it does not cut down on the backtracking of a 100% playthrough because you still have to return to Web Spider's Jungle for the heart tank after you have acquired Rising Fire from Magma Dragoon in this very stage.
Upon rewatch, the fact that the Ride Armor can break those blocks at all suggests that there was a way to get it up there when the game was being developed.
