I'm so glad they let you film this. I can understand why they didn't want footage of it whilst the ride is still operating, but now its going it's great to have a record of it

Why is the tunnel (maze) section fenced off ? That part was so cool where it looks like the trains going to crash into you
Travelled to the UK in 2019 to do some of the theme parks. Must have gone on the Ghost train on a bad day as not only were my VR headphones not working, but there were no live actors in the middle bit? No staff member or infected taking you through the maze, it was self guided with no smoke or lighting effects. The fake gift shop was definitely the best bit!
I went on this ride many years ago and I don't remember ever going through a tunnel? When there was jump scares with the VR headset on the staff would grab your legs to make it even more jumpy. I thought the whole experience was awesome! Gutted it closed down, thanks for the video.
That middle portion has really deteriorated since the opening. Hoping the replacement will do it better. Brilliant video Jack! Will we see any teasers of the new ghost train from you to give us an idea of what it is like?

Cool video. I never got a chance to ride it, so I was hoping for a good look at the demon in the fake gift shop, but I can't really make it out. Is the demon an actor in a costume or an animatronic?

I've lowkey wanted to see what the gift ship jumpscare has looked like for years, not gonna lie that was pretty underwhelming

Went on it yesterday and there wasn't VR there. What a pity. Might've been much immersive experience than with solely live acting. The idea of it is good, I agree that getting half way off the train kind of ruins it. There is so much potential, hope they develop it further to make it more intense. What I liked about it was that I had no idea what was going to happen. Before I went on it, I thought it was an actual ride with scary characters popping up in the darkness. So the whole thing was surprising and interesting.
People should not watch the video before they go on the ride though - that'll spoil the whole thing for them.
I really hope Universal Studios does something like this.

It’s a shame our vr headsets weren’t staying on and most weren’t working.. it was really good but definitely tainted seeing reactions while trying to sort yours out
I went through the new Ghost Train and compared to this it was really boring just some story about some sobs trying to attain immortality and while the rides aesthetics where nicer with kind of fake advertisement making the setting feel more real and the train looking good and grungy which is more fitting but compared to Derren Brown’s work the story was just a drag and the scare actors on their own just didn’t do it for me

I still have no idea what the hell this ride has to do with Derren Brown. It's a clichéd story coupled with poorly maintained and filthy VR headsets.
I thought they would rebrand the attraction due to negative feedback.

This looks kinda lame. I know it’s not the same as actually being there, but still…. The part with the “infected” guy was laughably bad and Derek reminding everyone to “keep it a secret” kills the immersion and reinforces that what we saw isn’t real. It’s a ride.

There was never infected actors when walking between the VR parts, why add in fake bits for your videos to give people a false idea of what the experience was actually like?

eh it was the most expensive attempt on the whole "let's put VR in theme parks!" craze, i still commend them for trying something new instead of just slappipng headsets on one of the coasters

This ride (from conception to execution) absolutely baffles me. The getting off half way killed the pacing. I'd only done it once and when we went nothing happened in that corridor (or if it did, we didn't see anything).
The concept of a Tube train and the theming of the train is great. This re theme has so much potential. I hope they fix the pacing (i.e you don't get off, or that's simply then end of the ride) and make it atmospheric and improve the capacity.
The reason it stopped was bc there were actors most of the times
When it originally opened, the middle bit featured the riders witnessing a train crash (which was an amazing effect when it worked), the ground cracking open (another great effect that only worked intermittently), and finally zombies would attack the riders.
One of the big moments of the ride is during all the getting on and off it doesn’t look like the same train you got on. Some people don’t look back when they first get off so don’t even notice until getting back on that it’s a tube train in the outside. So when you finally leave and it’s backing to being the old cartridge you question how all that happened.
Will be interesting to see how they utilise that movement in the new version as of course the cat is very much out of the bag that it moves

I went on this ride once and personally think it's a fantastic ride. The research and development that went into creating the ride, the triggers, vr and actors and all multisensory elements went above and beyond. The Merlin team and external partners did a great job. I think people that say that it's rubbish or boring etc.. maybe because they have ridden it too many times before, they're not experiencing the magic behind it all for the first time. Theme Parks don't always aim to please enthusiasts, but they do a fantastic job thrilling and amusing the general public. I'd have loved to have a second go!
It has no re-ride factor mate...yes its okay for first timers...but you know what to expect second time round...the half decent part about the experience was the fake shop at the end...

This does miss one point, which is reliability. When I went, the second half completely did not work and so never got to experience that part.
Queue times was also long, sometimes with pre-booking tike slots being required. But I do agree that they took a risk here by trying something new, and do believe things like this experiment should carry on. Darren brown ghost train is quite unique.
People want so much more these days and it must be difficult to come up with an idea that balances enjoyment and cost. This sort of ride appeals to me because of 3 factors
1) Im terrified of Coasters, never been on one (that 80s horror flick of one coming off the rails and decapitating everyone it hit did it for me)
2) I cant (anymore) ride a spinny round ride due to vertigo, really, I would barf my guts up now, as much as I loved them as a kid.
3) No chance on an up and down one (vertigo)
Maybe a nice tea cup or log flume.. wait, no, tea cup, spinning..urggh
I am genuinely gutted I didn’t get to try this. I love Derren, seen him live and think he’s a genius. Although it doesn’t look perfect at all, aspects of this really appeal to me, especially the ending and the pre show. I hope some of it stays for the reimagining
It would be both mad and sensible to retheme it to the waterloo & city line experience. 1 hour queue and the whole things a horror show

i know the ride had a bad rep but I did genuinely enjoy a lot of it. The VR aspect was wonky at best, but I love Derren Brown so much and the potential was there, if not fully utilised. I hope the new Ghost Train improves on it and keeps some of the hidden aspects.
As an American, I’m so glad I finally got to see why so many of my British friends complained about this ride. It’s definitely a lot of wasted ideas and improperly used elaborate equipment.

I went on this ride. I was so genuinely terrified that it brought on a fatal heart attack…. I died instantly but I live again…. I am destined to haunt this train for eternity and I’ll be waiting for you and watching you…

Cannot believe I queued hours for this when it opened and am so pleased its gone one of the most overhyped rides ever. Hope the retheme does not involve running off the train again. I would like to see them play more on the Victorian theme., make the train inside Victorian not modern. And use some video screens on the windows.
Tbh it looks rubbish!
Looks like they modified it slightly than when I last went on it - when moving between trains they had a bit where a fake train was barreling towards you down a tunnel and flashes its lights and horns which caused the biggest scare of anyone on the ride, but now they just have a stationary facade. But the creature in the giftshop also looked like a new addition.

I know I would have had a mental breakdown if I rode it irl so I'm glad I was given the opportunity to see the ride for how it was after all this time.
I remember going on this ride a good 3 years ago, I don't understand how so many people had such a bad experience with it. My experience was incredible, there were so many live actors during the middle bit and at the end withe gift shop. Its a shame you didn't manage to capture the entirety of the VR section though
Ah, there was more to the vr- I thought it seemed a little underwhelming and short for what was shown on the video, but that makes sense!
My misses had a panic attack on this and we had to get off but we got a free stealth ticket so not bad 😂
it does give gcse drama vibes, it’s not the acting in it’s self i think the acting is appropriate for the range of audience you’ll get on this on this kind of ride, The acting style suggests you are safe the whole way through which is great usually but, I don’t think it really works alongside an illusion & confusion based magic show, darren saying “keep the secret” after the gift shop scene just feels a bit cringey as there wasn’t really anything that made him earn my trust, I think to have a ride where an aspect of it is to keep the secret of it, it needs to not be anti climatic wether it’s talked about or not before going in
The idea was there the space looked great, i’m really excited to see what changes, maybe multiple story lines could bring people back?
Now Darren Brown Ghost Train is now closed it be nice to have the 3D 360 videos form the so anyone could re experience it in your own headset like Meta Quest 2. can you ask Thorpe Park if they can do that as it was my favourite ride there

Great video. Although not the best of rides, DBGT is an attraction I remember quite fondly, so thank you for preserving it for posterity. Where did you find the VR footage?
I went on this for the first (and now last) time during Fright Nights last year - VR was a bit wonky but still an interesting concept. I'd heard about the fake shop at the end but they seemed to divert us past it during our run; I spotted the photo kiosk as we passed the exit door to that room but wasn't able to get inside to look closer (and was later informed that those photos were on a "separate system" to everything else which is why I couldn't buy them from the app, if indeed they exist at all).
Is there any chance of getting some behind-the-scenes footage of the ride? The train mechanism is impressive, but so far I've been unable to find any photos or videos of it from the outside.

i was so honoured to be a scare actor for this attraction becore it closed.
It's a shame that a cool concept and then the final product becomes horrible. I wish they could redesign it and update it like for Nemesis at Alton Towers.

I am so glad I got to ride this version of it. As an American who loves haunted houses, spooky movies, and amusement rodes of all types - this was 1 of my 2 fave rides at Thorpe Park the other being Swarm. May even make it on my top 30 rides of all time for being so unique and thrilling. Slightly sad, I wont get to do this same version again. Though I will try any new version if I get to visit there again.

Incase anyone wondered, its not like this now its ten times worse and derren browns name was taken off. I went yesterday and was severly disappointed derren didnt f with my head, but even this version didnt do derren much justice :( 0/10 for the one now 3/10 for this. If they used better makeup and costume for the actors that would be great but that zombie is terrible, and the nun on my one was dressed in a poundland costume, one actor was being underpaid and needs to go do some broadway and the other one was awkward and did not want to be there. All day walking round the park all you hear is yeah the ghost train was shit😂save yourself the waste of time and try the walking dead one instead, its a bit scarier but dont expect any zombies :( good design though dont want to ruin it but it is built just like the walking dead (one of the places they lived and thrived)

I found out from employees that under each seat there was a separate pc powering each vr headset, which weren't ventilated well, so hence had a tendency to break down a lot, particularly in hot weather !

As someone who studies the ins and outs of entertainment design, this experience seems quite awful. I'm assuming Derren Brown is a big name celebrity in the UK, provided that his name and presence is emblazoned throughout the attraction. But I felt like his repetitive inclusion in the experience crippled every aspect of how good or scary this attraction could've been. It's like he's constantly telling you "don't get too involved, it's all fake." His presence repeatedly ripped me out of the story or whatever story they tried to portray. The preshow was waaaaayy too much exposition and it was in direct contrast to what kind of mood they were trying to create. I couldn't understand what the story of the ghost train was or why there was a zombie walking around or why we had on VR helmets in a subway train or why we couldn't breathe the "gas" or why we were on the train or why the subway train was pristine and clean on the inside but detailed like it came from the early 1900s on the outside. There was no who, what, when, where, and why to the story. It was all an inconsistent jumble of moods, textures, effects, and gimmicks that didn't mesh well together to immerse you into its world.
You're seeing the ride at its very worst. When it opened, it was fantastic. It had a lot more effects, a proper story and a whole host of excellent actors. The middle section was a brilliant and scary section with a brilliant effect of a subway train hurtling down the tunnel straight at you and crashing. There was an amazing demon at the end in the gift shop. Over the years, more and more things constantly got stripped out of the ride and the experience was bared back to the pathetic shambles displayed in this video. Such a shame that many people never got to experience this ride as it originally used to be.

The fake gift shop was the best part as we weren't expecting it and were just stood around talking about how strange and confusing the ride was when everything started shaking.

I mean it was only 1 person on the ride. But I see your view aswell.
Dude talks way too much. I didn’t come here for a lecture on fear. That middle part was incredibly underwhelming as well. Instead of having a subpar actor run out and make noises at you, they could have had that train car come at you. Or, just not get off at all since it kills the whole mood. Why do you get on a train with a victorian era exterior if the whole thing is themed around a modern underground? Sure it’s nice to look at, but it makes no sense. The story and theme have to be cohesive to keep the illusion for the audience. There are some great ideas here it just wasn’t executed well.
The VR aspect wasn’t around when I was on the ride. The story was rewritten as well. I guess the changes happened because the ride was getting some negative feedback and the licence for hiring Darren Brown expired.

That said, Derren did have to remember also for & frankly mainly should be, for, younger kids whose parents take them to theme park, but for an adult, well, errr, derren is the single most amazing illusionist / mentalist i really have ever seen, barr none, so something he did here & put his name too doesnt seem quite right
My sister did this the other day and said the first time was amazing. The second time was still fun but you already know what is going to happen.
Rode this and it was good but did the same thing at scarefest when it was a scare maze and it was a vampire in the crypt. I held my god daughter hand so tight she has my imprint on it for hours .that was just audio
