Swedish weapons are always so sexy, AK-5, S-tank, JA-37, JAS-39. They are all far beyond the front of their current time, impressively. After all they were always ready for fighting the monstrous Soviet Russian at any time in that period. Tough guys and blonde girls, long live Sweden.

swedish attack sub HMS Gotland is the bigest threat to the US Navy Fleet... in the most of the naval military exercises Gotland have got trough al of the us anti sub defence and sunc not only a aircraft carrier but several ships before they where found. Bofors AT4 is the most effective mobile anti tank weapon, used by most armys around the world.
and then we have the fact that we here in sweden educate almost every specialcomands like Seals, Rangers and Frensh Legionnaries in winter warfare... why well Lapplands Jägarna and Swedish Special Forces (Särskilda operativa gruppen SOG) simply kicks ass in winter warfare... Yes the swedish army can seam undermaned and without foundeings.. but the smal crappy force we hav still kicks major asses!

about 600kg war material plutonium is stored in Östhammar (forsmark) as late as 2010 swedish army gave away the last 3kg plutonium to the US
the turns around the swedish nukelear program is still held classified... nobody knows exactly how many warheads that where prodused but its estimated that 10 made it from "R1"

Perfect for domestic air defence/ patrols. A bit lightweight on range and payload but those aren't the most important things for civilised non bullying countries. Top notch on electronic warfare.

This is one good looking stylish plane
it dosent need to be 5th gen, its a defensive fighter :) it is made to do short takeofs and landings on normal roads (where cars drive) and it can be refueled and re-armed in less than 10 minutes by a untrained personell, like soldiers :D
if you wanna fly to another country and bomb them, then dont buy a Gripen, if you want to defend your country with a good looking highly maneuverable plane, buy Gripen ;D
The Flying Gasmask The part with landing on normal roads match Sweden (at least back in the days) Up in the northern parts of Sweden where i live we have alot of normal roads that was used for military planes to land on then hide them in the forest so none can see them from the sky. Sadly they aint used anymore tho.

adam josefsson Well not surprised south Sweden had hangars. Up in Umeå/Skellefteå they didn't have hangars. They had "parking spots" next to normal roads where they parked then covered them with cut trees.

+korahezra29 Agreed, but those Engines will hurt both the envioroment aswell as your wallet, the fuel consumtion is like 10x as much.. Gripen is quite badass without it.. Doens't excel at anything, but can still compete with Everything.
+ThePoutamo It excels at keeping your costs down :)And you really dont have to go bananas with the engine if weight is low and aerodynamics are super. Otherwise it would just be a new kind of JA 37 Thunderbolt..and that heavy bird had an suped up JT8 engine.. it was humongous, powerful and..thirsty.

It's a yugoslav national army (JNA , VT Institute Belgrade , Yugoslavia) last project . The project was called "NA - NOVI AVION" or YU SUPERSONIC.
Prototype made in 4 version and tested 1989 -1990 used engines imported from France and electronics from Sweden. Everything else was done by yugoslavian team.
Then came Tuđman -Milošević & CO.

The problem when people say gripen sucks is that they don't count money or purpose into the equation. If your goal is to fly very long distance to just drop some bomb then gripen is not the plane for the job. But gripen is a much cheaper and smaller (harder to hit) plane and is good against other planes and giving airsupport. Gripen have also the worlds best sensors system which allows them to look on missile against planes in high speed (extremely high) and send radar information to each other so everyone sees what one plane sees. If you count 3-4 gripen against one f35 then I'm pretty damn sure that the gripen plane will win BUT because these two plane or planes of that high technology have never fought against eachother in a real match to the death its hard (or impossible) to say how a match with 1 gripen vs 1 F35 or 2 gripen vs1 F35 or 1 gripen vs 25 F35 will end. Its all speculations!

but you cant compare Gripen to the F-35... Because the F-35 cant dogfight, it would be destroyed!
Finally someone with some sense! Everybody just thinks about engines and stealth. If it has two engines and stealth it is the best aircraft in the world according to them.
Its not fair to compare the f-35 to the gripen as the f-35 is used more for air to ground and reconnaissance missions but if you compare the saab gripen to the f-22 raptor it would be a much better comparison

Stunning aircraft, looks very similar to the Eurofighter Typhoon, not surprising as BAE systems jointly developed both this and the Typhoon. Huge respect from you neighbours across the strait in the UK :)

BAE systems has not jointly developed JAS 39 Gripen. It's Saab. And it's more similar to JA 37 Viggen.

The j-39 is more than half the weight of the f+35,plus that in a scuandron of 6,only one needs to have it´s radar activated,thus rendering it invisible to radar.The concept of radar invisibility is afolly,once your radar is active,you are visible.Andmademainly of carbon fibre it is truly "invisible" and deadly compared to the pompus F-35.

Well you've got some F/A-18's, don't you?
maybe because it's much much much cheaper to Operate F5's then Planes like the Gripen. For example a ground crew can take out the F5's Engines by hand and without a Crane/machine. it's only 500 pounds per engine.
F5's is meant to be cheap and effective for what it is.
Actually the gripen is very cost effective, and built for a small staff should be able to service it after basic training

but if Saab wants to skyrocket their sales of the Gripen ,the plane has to prove itself in an air force that fights every day .The air forces that battle every day are the Turkish and the Greek.The Turks have submitted to the F35 so its necessary for Saab to sell Gripens to the Greeks ( helping them with exceptionally good deals or even donate some-ok,not all of them - as theyre kinda poor).So if the gripen can make the name of the good and rugged fighter and so the sales will literally take off.Saab should invest on the Greek needs and reap the benefits

TheNomadicGrammarNazi I think the closest english word I know for reference is grief. Replace the f with a p and then ad -en. Griepen. Or maybe Griep'n ;)
Grip (pronunced just like grief but with a p) is the base word. Can also mean grip as in gripping something. Or to arrest someone. In this context it means "gryphon". I think it comes from the gryphon having big claws that it can carry people away with - but thats just a guess ;)
Adding -en at the end of most nouns in swedish is like putting "the" in front of one in english. Gripen = The Gryphon.

Swedish planes have always had these prefixes that explain the role. Just like B-, A- and F in the states. But JAS makes a pronounceable word that sounds OK compared to older models. Media and such have made the Jas-name stick :P

..well in Hungary you say the same. GripPen. It is easear to pronounce the word in hungarian with the double P. It is still a hell of a fighter and I am proud when I see a Gripen with "hungarian airforce" on it!

yes pretty cool and effective specs !! and i think not only the North should support that plane but also the poorer south Europe because of the neat price ,and the versatility .But the Greeks are too poor and sometimes they buy lots of US stuff like f16 and will face the f35 the Turks will soon have ,the Italians gambled towards the Eurofighters and also the f35 ,the Spaniards have the f18 and the eurofighters and the Portugese the f 16(also one engine ) .

Красиво показали, звук приятный, видимо поработали, да и вообще красивый самолет. Но война это штука грязная, безпринципна и убийственна. И например хорошей российской ракете будет наплевать сколько датчиков у этого самолета, насколько он красивый, его слоновые ушки отвалятся при виде какой ни буть СУ "SY" ). А так, я искренне рад что Швеция имеет, и делает вклад в развитие авиопрома человечества.

Вне серьезных военных конфликтов на нем летать наверняка приятно ) Как раз для шведов) Но меня умиляет тот факт что у них свой самолет, это говорит от том что они по сути, хоть как то поддерживают очаг своего самолетостроения. Может когда то, что то то у них и выстрелит. Поэтому уважуха им.
