@@mattlloyd-davies9993 Vocal editing is auto tune but done manually. So audio engineers will very carefully scrape through the vocal recording and remove/mute certain consonants, balance everything, make sure the pitch is perfect, etc. Auto tune takes the live vocals and just fits them on the grid in real time. Nowadays all audio engineers edit vocals, some people like post Malone will also use auto-tune in addition. I honestly don’t think it’s all that important a distinction, but vocal editing will get rid of a lot of things you’ll hear in auto tune and make it sound way more natural. People like Michael Buble are incredibly talented but his audio engineers will still make sure everything is perfectly in tune and cleaned up. I honestly don’t care even when people use auto tune, I think people are just gatekeeping it. There are some people I really enjoy who use lots of auto tune (like Camilla Cabello) and others who only clean up their vocals for a more raw feel (like Billie Eilish).

Right! And, most importantly, it has NOTHING to do with the singer being able to sing or not! Most famous singers know their singing technique. You just manipulate sound because you want certain effects. A precise vocalist can give you twenty great, perfectly serviceable vocal takes and prefer to have them combed through to choose the bits they like the most from each to form what in their head is the most expressive, rich and clear take.
Artists who are able to outperform their older album compositions live deserve a special part in our hearts. It shows their development and hard work of warm-up clearly. Devin Townsend for example.
