The revolution started in there, within the hearts and minds of the people of East Germany. This is a very smart man who knows history, in depth, but I am afraid that he knows more about the Korean War than the war in Ukraine. There is the outside chance that Kim would get rid of North Korean criminals. Yes Russia has been reduced to asking weird people or countries for help. We don’t underestimate North Korea.

As a fluent Korean speaker who lived in South Korea for twenty years, I found this a fascinating and insightful interview, as one comes to expect from Ms Gerbeau.
Professor Sung Yoon Lee definitely has an accurate perception of the issues surrounding the North Korea question and I wholeheartedly agree with his analysis (and his suggestions for dealing with North Korea, published elsewhere).
The only point with which I would have a possible disagreement would be on the degree to which North Korea might be impacted by the replacement of Putin as leader of Russia. Of course, Professor Lee wasn't directly asked to imagine regime change of any kind, let alone one in which Russia became a western leaning democracy, but, should it happen, North Korea and China would essentially be isolated as the only major pariahs on the global stage.
If Russia were to become a true democracy, China would in fact be highly susceptible to pressure from the West: Measures such as desourcing plus sanctions, could in fact bring down a Chinese regime that no longer had a resource rich neighbouring ally.
At this point, North Korea in turn would become an unsustainable state, as it relies heavily on Chinese support for its existence. Under these conditions it is possible to imagine the collapse of the North Korean state.
These are, of course, highly hypothetical, even fanciful conjectures but, for me, this route remains on of the few ways in which I can imagine an end to North Korea as a state.
In this sense, I'm sure at least that North Korea would be extremely worried by and possibly impacted by a regime change in Russia.
At any rate, an excellent interview from Professor Lee.
Above all, though, it should be said, yet again, that Ms Gerbeau is by far the most talented interviewer on politics on UA-cam. She demonstrates a clear ability to listen to and understand her interviewee's comments and perspectives through the intelligent questions that she asks in return to any interviewee's responses. Given her obvious talent and equally evident popularity, it boggles the mind why she isn't covering a broader range of topics on prime time mainstream TV.
    Producers, take note!!

@@harmonsalmon7739 Professor Lee is a specialist on the subject of North Korea and how it should be handled. His main point is that the North Korean leadership is out-smarting both his enemies (US) and his allies (China/ Russia) and that they have more or less got their way since 1953. In other works, not in this video, he suggests a two point strategy of 1) containing the regime with strict sanctions with few exceptions and 2) interactions with the grass roots population through mass communication that aims to show the population the degree to which they are being lied to and that food and medical aid should be given to help underline the benevolent aims of South Korea, the US and their allies.
In this video, other than explaining that the North Korean regime isn't crazy in the casual sense and is in fact highly intelligent, as evidenced by their ability successfully to play all sides to get what it wants, Prof Lee is suggesting that, more than just military hardware as most commentators have focused on, North Korea has most likely offered military personnel to go to the Ukraine region. (Incidentally, this mirrors a Vietnam era deal by the US - South Korea at the time, whereby South Korea sent combat troops in exchange for military technology supplied by the US). He states that these troops will likely be sent in the guise of being medical or other supporting units (I.e. not fighting troops) whereas they will in fact be combat troops. (Other countries have regularly done the same with special forces troops). Professor Lee is basically saying watch this space and don't underestimate what is happening.
