We had an 87 Tercel 4WD wagon SR5. Not sure why the horsepower ratings were higher in 86 but ours had only 62 bhp and you needed to work every single horse on the engine on most days, especially if you wanted to use the A/C. In 1989, my family drove up to Syracuse from NJ to pick me up for Thanksgiving. Problem was, driving back, we had 6 people and luggage to transport. With only 5 seats, my sister sat in the way back surrounded by my grandmother and aunt's luggage. Other luggage went on the roof. Fully freighted, we drove 200 interstate miles home in a snow storm with the engine under serious load the whole way.The wagon was seriously put to the test but handled it beautifully...and even seemed to like it. My favorite driving challenge/experience of all time`! Thanks for reviewing this!
Found out 4WD Tercel for less than most people's monthly vehicle payment! I call it the Six Hundred Bucks and a Clutch Tercel! They are fun cars! I had a 2wd Tercel as my first car and always wanted 4wd.
Boy I sure do miss my old 97 tracel That had no power steering, just a mirror and it came like that and one speaker but I loved that little car. It felt like driving a go cart.
I just bought one of these for 500 bucks, 480,000 km. Little rusty but everything works including the 4 wheel drive. Just a beater to bomb 💣 around in. POS but actually in the city 🏙 fun to drive…. I lied 🤥 radio doesn’t work but all mechanical stuff, lights etc do
Excellent review. Consider that the US includes California and Texas. There are plenty of these cars in good shape still running in the USA. Unless you live in Chicago or New Jersey
I remember my cousin driving one of these from Alberta to my house near Toronto in the 90s. It had holes in it you could fit your hand it, but the damn thing ran like a top and made the trip with zero issues
Summer of 1984. I had just finished my sophomore year of high school. My friend invited me to the movies to see Meatballs Part 2. He picked me up in one of these, brand new. It was his mom's new car. I thought it looked like a shoe box. But found it interesting that it was 4 wheel drive, which pretty much wasn't needed in Los Angeles.
I was trying to remember what this car was for a while, fun to actually see one working (I remember my dad had one in my early years, not sure when he gave it up). I wasn't sure if it was Toyota but I did know that it was 4WD capable, and it looked like a box. Thankfully that is all I needed to know in order to find it.
My mother drove an ‘87 4-WD Tercel Wagon that was unstoppable! A 5-sp transmission would have probably made it capable of flight. The car outlived my mother!
I'd recommend not shifting the 4wd while moving, it just puts extra stress on the trans which is extremely hard to find. And the cupholder is the giant hole of a center console. You also never mentioned that you cant use that extra low gear unless it's in 4wd. It's a 6 speed in 4wd and a 5 speed in fwd.
Love this car! If I had been old enough to drive and afford a car in 1986, I would have definitely considered a Tercel 4WD wagon. I remember seeing them and liking them as a kid. Like you said, so few have survived. I don't like that crazy tailpipe the current owner put on the car though.
Lol don't worry it was completely removable and just put it there for a bit of a fun and to practice some exhaust welding! I've already removed it and used the pipe to fix another projects exhaust
@@bronsonvanwingerden4930 Cool, glad to hear it! I think for this car, a stock style exhaust would suit it best, or maybe a slightly deeper tone muffler, but that fits in the stock location.
Wish you would have showed how the inclinometer worked. These cars had them to show pitch and roll. I had a regular '81 Tercel that I bought new in High School. One of the favorite cars that I owned.
It would be nice if Toyota made something like this today, that meets current safety standards and with modern technology (though not too complex, simple is better). A car like this would suit many people's needs. They don't need a pickup, SUV or Crossover. Though I guess the RAV4 and new Corolla Cross are the closest vehicles we have to this today.
Hey dude today I just saw one 87 for sale 4 wheel drive and I doing some researching on UA-cam I found your video and yes I will buy this little treasure. Thanks for posting the video
So yea.. It was covered in Marvin the Martian stickers, it may have won me the ugliest car of the class of 1997, and it may have shook like it was going to fly apart when I tried to break 100mph going downhill with a cello sticking out the back, but what I wouldn't give for one more legendary adventure in that blue box with wheels. I miss you old blue, you always got this 17 yr old teenager to school on time, and to work to flip burgers on the weekends, but you could take on a dirt road in the middle of the woods or run thru the snow like a champ. I miss you, my old Blue Bullet. You were amazing!!
We had one of those my Family bought because of the fourwheel drive, It was SOOO slow it had no power. Load it up with two kids and the back full air on was laughable. You just accept it that's about it. It was fantastic in the snow and was very dependable. We kept it and used it as a Truck basically cause we lived on a huge farm.Got a Subaru Turbo Wagon awd.. Much better car and much faster ...
Great review but you missed one of the best things. You didn't mention the shape of those front seats and the two grab handles per seat. That's very much like an off-road Safari style seat. Also known as Jesus bars
The 4WD system on the Tercel mechanically locks the front and rear axles together; so it's a proper part-time 4WD ... you will experience wheel scrub and drivetrain binding if you use the system on dry pavement.
Why a big freggin bottle test??? Why not something more relevant like a universal phone holder test? Or a good location for a 12v input test? Anyways great freggin choices in cars love the videos keep emm coming!

As a kid, you’d of rather walked to school than get dropped off in this. 35 years later you want to own it. 🤷🏼♂️
240,728 miles, 35 years...a true survivor! Another testament to the boring but beautiful Toyota.
Great review or a seriously under appreciated car. Love the plaid interior that some of these came with. Such a unique little animal.
Kudos for finding one in working condition. Amazing to see one survive. Love these reviews.
Oh memories. My family used to have this car but of course it rusted away!

I watch all the Tercel reviews I can find, well done
I want one of these so freaking bad
I saw what you did back there

My cousin had one of those in the 80’s. We called it the ghostbusters car. Would buy one as a winter beater if I came across one.
He is one lucky dude. I would love to have one of these again
Had a Tercel 4/4. Regret selling it and replacing with a Citroën BX.
so glad I found this video! I'm looking to pickup a Toyota tercel as a new daily!

I think he should change the size of his bottle has it can fit on every cars , but I really like your video tanks a lot 😊.

I love how Toyota put one reverse light right in the center of the tailgate.
The 1986-7 Lincoln Town Car had the same thing!! LOVE IT!!!!!😎😁
I'm here because of Jesse Pinkman.

Lol, no one is mentioning the exhaust extension?
I like my Tercel a lot!
The ceiling pattern looks like it came from a modern day Kia!
Oh yes, time to review my favorite car, the mighty Tercel 4WD! And no, me owning one does not at all make me biased. :)

Cool ! My high school teacher drove one of these back in the day !
Acura had the Legend, fwd but longitudinal mounted engine. Most Audis are like that as well.
Any info on the mounting brackets that were used for the rally lights?
Guessing he fabbed those up, but good question. I just ordered a light bar for my roof, but a couple on the bumper would be nice also.

Nice throwback to the mr2 lol
I’ve got both. Wish my MR2 was running so I could switch from one to the other.

Is it awd or 4wd with a center diff lock?
