This competency tool was developed collaboratively to support people working at Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) providing healthcare and all other related services. This tool is meant to support the individual and collective journey of ongoing self-assessment, learning, and commitments to incorporating Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism into clinical practice.
This tool is designed to guide the learning journey towards Indigenous Cultural Safety and culturally safe practice. This journey requires ongoing learning, reflection, and action. The learning process is circular rather than linear and it is not about reaching an endpoint of expertise, but rather about a humble and ongoing commitment to change and improving the quality and safety of health-care experienced by Indigenous people.
Brandi Dan is a Indigenous Nurse Educator with Vancouver Coastal Health. She is of mixed ancestry; English/Scottish settler on her mother’s side and First Nations (Bonaparte Band)/Chinese on her father’s side.
Alyson Parker is a Regional Clinical Educator with Vancouver Acute Professional Practice at Vancouver Coastal Health. Alyson is committed to a lifelong learning journey in Indigenous cultural safety, anti-racism, and specifically learning how to undo the harm done by her settler ancestors.
Jessica Key (She/Her) is an Indigenous Nurse Educator with Vancouver Coastal Health. She is Musgamaugw Dzawada’enuxw of Gwayi (Kingcome Inlet, BC) on her father’s side and British/Irish on her mother’s side. She has worked as a registered nurse since 2017, primarily with youth dealing with concurrent disorders.
Elan Nattrass is of mixed settler descendancy and was trained as Respiratory Therapist in Treaty 6 territory (Edmonton). She is currently the Regional Allied Health Professional Practice Lead at VCH.
If you are a healthcare worker in BC and would like to learn more, courses endorsed by multiple BC health organizations (i.e., VCH, PHC, FNHA, FHA, HEABC, IHA, VIHA, NHA & PHSA) are available on Learning Hub (learninghub.ph...) under the topic of "Indigenous Cultural Safety".
