Part of it is learning to trust your coach and that takes time. Once I started to see some improvement results when you coached me my trust in you went up and then things really started to click. So from an athlete to a coach, don't take it personally of we dont listen. Thanks for all you do, Jane

Hi Dan! Agree the trust takes time. I definitely don't take it personally...what's challenging is seeing injury and burnout develop right before my eyes from training mistakes that are easily corrected. But that's part of the learning process sometimes and I've been there. Hindsight is always 20/20. 😊

If you are trying to coach someone, even on an informal level, it gets frustrating when someone refuses to listen to anything at the very beginning. I remember one balked that he was dreadfully out of shape and wanted to run a marathon, and I suggested a longer base period, but he didn't want to run in winter _at all,_ insisting that Program X a decade earlier was only 20 or 24 weeks total. I didn't dare say, "What kind of shape were you in when you started?"

too many choices, can't work for everyone ect ect
ALL EXCUSES- i was not accepting nor willing to put in the work
i thought the PLAN COULD NOT BE TRUSTED- but it was really ME i didnt trust!!!
    THANK YOU!!

Yes, at some point you just have to realize that you won't know 100% if the plan will work, but you won't know if you don't try. And ultimately, consistency is number one, so if you're simply getting in the miles on the schedule, so much will come from that. Keep going and you'll be amazed when you look back on your progress!!

One of the hardest lessons to learn for me was that running takes time (years!!) to see improvements especially for older runners like me. In my last marathon training I tried low heart rate training and it worked well as I had way more in the tank at the end of the marathon but I lacked speed to improve my time and mental toughness at the end to push even though I was not physically depleted. And then there is that I love running fast as it is fun and motivating.

LHRT is a great way to build endurance as you're running more volume. But incorporating 1 speed day in per week is important for getting comfortable being uncomfortable and allowing your body to tap into that speed. Definitely have to find that balance - all you need is small doses of speed though. Keep going - sounds like you're doing great.

Thank you Coach Jane, I always seem to cheer up when I watch another one of your fantastic videos. Yes, I am still riding the "stupid" bicycle, almost 8 months now. I mean it's all good, as winter is coming here in NYS, so it will be safer to "walk/run" than ride the bicycle. Guess it will be like "starting over again", except I know the process to get back to running, not sure that I will ever reach that goal of running 10 miles with you, I was close last year, not so much this year, LOL. I guess this old body has a limit, 59 soon, but HEY Coach Jane, I want to always remind you. THIS journey with you has always been a WIN for me, thank you so much, and have an Awesomeness week.

Always appreciate you sticking around!! Nothing wrong with keeping healthy and active by riding the bike.

I thought I was going backwards but:
I did 30 miles yesterday 90% in zone 2-3 and 5% in zone 4 (up some of the hills)
Not bad for 70 years old but not great. I would have been better all in the high Zone 2-3
I'm basically just speed walking trails with a little jogging here and there.
Now the next 5 days in the lower end of Zone 2 and then a hard Tempo for 8 miles
Rinse repete with a few "Pick-Ups" in there somewhere.
Edit . . . just three days after this I did a PB 10 miles run/walk at 12% faster than my previous PB and I was able to run a larger percent of it. (1000 ft of elevation in 5 miles)

I am open to suggestions like adding strength training and other running tips, but I’m also aware that certain plans and tips are not applicable to me at this time as a slow, overweight older runner.

I think that's why it's so important to choose the right plan first and to take time to research it so you know you have it right. Then that makes points 1,2 and 3 simple to execute. Not easy, buts simple. And as far as the last point of not being the exception to the rule, your point is valid, I think it's just important to think objectively and ask yourself if there's truly something you can't do/doesn't apply to you, or could it be an excuse? Not saying you're making excuses...I mean this for everyone to take an honest look at their approach. Obviously just getting out there and running for health and joy is number one...this is angled a bit more if someone's wanting to be more competitive with their running.

You dont need a structured plan so much as to work on the things that will get you closer to where you want to be which, like me, is to get that weight down. I need to drop 15 pounds and I seem to be stuck at 200 lbs after losing 20 lbs but I have more lean muscle mass as well so maybe I only need to lose 12 lbs. It's hard to tell but having a body mass of 27 is way too heavy and hinders training at my present age of 69. You should take a look at the YT channel "Evokeendurance" and watch the video (two parts) "The Physiology Of Endurance" so that you can basically write your own plan. This will also help you understand all the principles that Jane is always talking about (and WHY)
