4BT Cummins Ford Transmission Upgrade

  • In this video, I discovered that the slave cylinder in my 4BT Cummins Ford went bad. It snowballs from there.
    Old Transmission Setup: Small block ZF542 transmission with no synchros left, an internal clutch slave cylinder, and small block Ford clutch. Weak.
    New Transmission Setup: Brand New ZF547 Powerstroke transmission rated for higher torque, better gear split for diesel engines, external slave, and a Southbend Clutch.
    Parts ordered from Diesel Conversion Specialists.
    The setup is so much better. More positive clutch engagement, stronger parts, and better drive-ability. Keep in mind, this may be overkill for your 4BT Cummins. This one is pushing 184hp and 485 ft. lbs. of torque to the wheels. That is real uncorrected power. At the flywheel those numbers translate to 225 hp, and 600 ft. lbs. of torque.

    Just bought a 72 highboy. Going to restore and run a 12 valve Cummins. Learning a lot from your Channel. Love your truck!

    Watching one of your previous vids (test drive) . I would like to make some suggestion & maybe you already know these things . But possibly some of your readers do not . 4BT = 4cyl , block bored,no sleeves,,& T= turbo
    “1st” , > your add said 4BT , & then you said , > pre-turbo ! There could be a problem here,, “A”, did it originally have.a turbo ? There is a diff between 4B & 4BT in the oil system, the 4B does not have the piston cooling oil squirt nozzles!! AND the pistons are for higher compression!
    “2” > engine temp is very important, & you did not allow it to warm up before you drove it ! A locking throttle cable would help here .Would it be possible to adapt the shutters or that vinyl pull back ,from a big truck , that close of the air , to help keep engine at proper temp , especially since you live where it gets COLD , l think you would be a FIRST !
    “3”> The cooler the air going into the engine the better ie-> inter-cooler
    “4”> 4BT best operating RPM = 1800 for power & efficiency, so for highway use your transmission should have overdrive’s !!
    “5”> Top quality oil & filter & grease are a MUST , helps keep temp down , because of less friction , hence longevity!
    “6”> go to goodoil4u.com
    A good source of info , from which l have used & learned a lot , a GREAT group of guys , 4BTswaps , they do all kind of swaps , then there is also vbelt&son.com
    Have a good one Robert

    I'm loving the channel! I just got a 79 F-250 with 351M and C6 . I have a Cummins 4BT from a genset from your experience would it be worth it to swap? I know it would be entire drivetrain swap as far as tranny and transfer case. For now I have put a Holley Sniper 2300 I had on my Jeep CJ and it works to get me by. I want this to be my forever truck. My first thought was LS swap but after finding your channel this seems to be a better route overall. Thanks!

    I'm gonna be doing a cummins swap soon I'm just curious how did you get your speedometer to work? Most new units are electric sensor

    • @RustyJunkExhibition
      @RustyJunkExhibition  2 роки тому

      It's a mechanical speedometer. BW1356 had mechanical and electronic.

    Love seeing your videos. I will have to see if I can use a 6.4 starter on mine as well. The only issue i have with mine is then started half the time doesn’t want to work.

    • @RustyJunkExhibition
      @RustyJunkExhibition  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you. The 6.4 starter is bolt in replacement for the 6.0. The 6.4 turns this 4BT fast.

      I wish I could have afforded one. The ZF5 works well with this truck.

    must be nice to have 10k sitting around for a transmission swap on a personal vehicle... why wasnt the shop that cracked the good ZF5 responsible for fixing/replacing it?

    How do you like the gear split of the diesel S547 vs the wide ratio S542? I have a 97 7.3 with the S547 and a 95 f150 I put a small block ZF in and what to do a 4bt. I'm thinking the wide ratio would be fine based on the fact that the nv4500 is a wide ratio and people seem to be happy with that behind the cummins. I also have a big block ZF laying around I would most likely use so I can get the 13 inch clutch and an external slave. I've already been through a slave when I had the m5od in it.

    • @RustyJunkExhibition
      @RustyJunkExhibition  4 роки тому +2

      The gear split is night and day. So much better with the 47 compared to the 42. I will say with the 3200 RPM gov spring, the 42's split is tolerable, but I would never go back. Additionally, the external slave is peace of mind, plus more clutch options. M5OD=Junk behind the Cummins!

    love this! I currently have a f100 used to run a 390 on propane but swapped it out for a 300 in-line 6, do you have any offhand idea for what transmission or re gear ration I could swap in for a little more top-end speed? I want to find a visor for mine as well!

    • @RustyJunkExhibition
      @RustyJunkExhibition  4 роки тому +1

      Awesome! As far as gear ratios, it depends on what you have and what size tires you run. Numerically lower ratios will give you more speed compared to higher numbers (3.50 will net higher speed than 4.10). These era trucks usually ran a 4.10 or 3.50 gear ratio. Or you could look into swapping an overdrive transmission. If yours is 2wd it will be cheaper to do. M5OD or ZF5 will be fine behind the 300 and both are plentiful at junk yards. Good luck!

      Ok thanks man! yeah I have 31in tires on it right now and it's the 4x4 - 4spd transmission in it right now. I need to change something ( starting with smaller tires ) as I can barely hit 100km or 60miles.

    Have you thought about a TH350?

    • @RustyJunkExhibition

      Never. A non lockup, non overdrive trans behind a diesel would not be ideal. Plus, I like shifting my own gears.
