  • North West Cape trip in July 2016 to the Naval Communication Station Harold E. Holt located on the northwest coast of Australia, 6 km north of the town of Exmouth, Western Australia.
The station provides very low frequency (VLF) radio transmission to United States Navy and Royal Australian Navy ships and submarines in the western Pacific Ocean and eastern Indian Ocean. The frequency is 19.8 kHz. With a transmission power of 1 megawatt.

I worked on tower zero in the early 70's, changing lights, and basic antenna maintenance. I also did concrete and cable replacement work on the other 12 to ensure their foundations were up to specifications (working as a Laborer for the Antenna Crew. They also stuck me working on the towers at the Receiver and Transmitter Site). I spent many hours waiting to be picked up after a day's work - so much fun. The elevator went up around a 1000 feet and you had to climb the last 276 feet (at least I think that was the distance.) . That was my first time at Holt with my father and me as a dependent. I then joined the Navy and was blessed with another tour as a Radioman Supervisor and then a Teletype Technician (Thanks to RM2 Denny Larson - best tech ever). Anyways, to all, If you ever get the opportunity to visit the town of Exmouth, don't miss it.)

My wife's father is the project manager for the upkeep of these towers and the naval pier. The wooden room amazes me as everything is made from wood down to the nuts and bolts as it isn't a conductor

You're right. the vid can't show the sheer size of the towers, especially tower zero, which used to be the tallest structure in the Southern hemisphere. I was stationed there from 1989-1992, and the base was turned over to the Aussies, and is a shell of what it once was.

Was there still a building called "The Bauman Center" by the pool on base? I know it was there in 1987 when we left. Named after my parents. It was a youth center.

I was offered orders to go there in 1992. I was a seabee. But I knew it was very isolated and no where near the east coast of Australia. I also talked to a construction electrician that was in my battalion who was stationed there for a couple years and told me what it was like. Needless to say I ended up getting out instead.

The low frequency can be detected/received under water. 'Regular' radio and satellite signals, can not penetrate the sea's surface.

I was a US Navy ET that worked on SITE at the VLF from '88 to '90. I never could figure out why they put that little 1.5 inch speaker on the supervisor console to alert the duty RM when we had a crowbar. I mean... there was a bolt of man -made lightning going off inside the main breakers a few dozen feet away. Not like you were going to mistake it for something else. I guess you had to be there. LOL

Thanks for the taking the time to comment. I think the video doesn’t convey the true immensity of the towers, my first view of the towers early in the morning had several of the towers disappearing into the cloud deck and the tops poking out the top of the clouds, just didn’t video well unfortunately.
The pentagram shape is I think the engineering outcome of the short capacitive hat antenna design, I say short as the antenna is small compared to the wavelength that determines the physical dimensions of an efficient antenna at 19.8kHz. I don’t think the antenna is used for reception (others may advise otherwise); it is a reliable and independent means of communicating with naval ships and more importantly submerged submarines. See the movie Crimson Tide as an example of when this type communication base transmits commands to the submerged nuclear missile submarine - Alabama.
I’m far from convinced that the United States government or anyone else has the technology to intentionally alter the weather, particular when you realize that this site get hit by cyclones all the time.

I've seen it as a kid and it still creeps me out. The sheer size of them is crazy and trips me out. I remember seeing that one little wooden room in the middle and thinking that has to be an elevator down below where they are experimenting on aliens or growing more politicians in a lab. But on the serious side of things there is no way that place is solely used for good and we do not know what they are doing.

Great video thank you for posting it have a nice day keep up the great work. : ) It's such a big set of towers must get good reception. Compared to the space satellite dish the radio antenna are huge makes you think and 13 towers and it's shaped like a pentagram star shape you would be led to think that these towers are used as part of that radio tower weather manipulation like America keeps using . I have no prof butt lick bill just my suspicions thanks again have a nice day .
