    Irish girl claims: We have freedom of speech, it is not exclusive to America
    *************
    From the Fundamental Rights under the Irish Constitution:
    Freedom of expression
    You have a right to freely express your convictions and opinions (Article 40.6.1.i). However, that right can be limited in the interests of public order and morality. You can also not use this right to defame someone else as this would interfere their constitutional right to a good name.
    The Constitution also states that it is an offence to publish or utter seditious (material undermining the authority of the State or advocating for the overthrow of the State) or indecent material.
    Following a referendum in May 2018, the Thirty-seventh Amendment of the Constitution (Repeal of offence of publication or utterance of blasphemous matter) Act 2018 was passed. Blasphemy is no longer a constitutional offence.
    The State is also obliged by the Constitution to make sure that media such as the radio, the press and the cinema are not used to undermine public order or morality or the authority of the State. For example, the Censorship of Publications Acts and the Censorship of Films Acts allow censorship of publications like books, films and DVDs.
    **************
    So you have free speech as long as the government doesn't deem it to be "out of the interest of public order" or deemed "immoral"
    You do not have the freedom to speak out to 'undermine the authority of the state'
    And only up until recently, speak out against the church.
    Yeah... America freedom of speech is exclusive.

      Yeah, the more I learn about Europeans, the more I realize that they don't quite understand what free speech means because they're very ready and willing to police each other's words. When their governments start doing some whack stuff, they just shrug and say, "That makes sense. That person was saying something that might hurt someone's feelings." Even in their day-to-day lives, they monitor what they say and do to avoid standing out too much out of fear of being ostracized. Less so in the UK, but the more monoethnic the country, the more everyone feels pressured to conform. Someone who feels the need to restrict what they say and how they enjoy basic things like food isn't as free as they think. Even if the government isn't restricting them, the culture around them is...

      I was going to say, I've seen those old roads. There is no 'side' to drive on. They are barely wider than a buggy and curved to shed rain. If you move to the side you run the serious risk of ending up in a ditch. In Colonial America up to the invention of the steam engine, the primary method of transportation (especially of goods) was by boat. This is why old cities tend to be near waterways.

    To Diane and all Europeans....The reason taxes are put at the end of your bill is because in the United States, it is against the law to hide any taxes on items sold! All percentages of taxes and what they are for must be shown on your bill. This goes for any food purchases right down to taxes and fees for your phone bills, cable bills, personal property taxes, the lot. No fees or taxes can be hidden. In our country, the United States, citizens have a right to know why and what for they are being taxed. Each state has their own laws and taxes, which is why there is differences on taxes in each county, town, or city. Even with all our sales taxes, Europeans VAT tax is much higher. I could definitely be mistaken, but from what I hear, a VAT tax of 20% is placed on every item sold in Europe. Whereas, in the United States, it's around 10% on your total bill.

    • @MBNHedger
      @MBNHedger Місяць тому +9

      And because of this law, and because you can have different tax rates at every level (city, county, state) the stores have essentially colluded to calculate tax separate from the price. People would simply only shop at stores with the lowest listed price if tax was calculated at the shelf. So stores simply list the price of the item on the shelf which would be the same in all locations, then any price differences at the register are both too late to avoid and blame can be pass along to the government just as the sales tax is pass along to the customer.

    • @kenbrown2808
      @kenbrown2808 Місяць тому +5

      it's not against the law. fuel taxes are included in the listed price. American sellers don't include the tax, because people just look at the advertised price and decide to buy; and then the seller can tack on taxes and fees and they don't change their minds.

  • @CTBauer
    @CTBauer Місяць тому +8

    The Irish do not have the same level of "free speech" as those in the US. Irish laws punish speech "that deliberately and recklessly incite or stir up acts of hostility, discrimination or violence". In the US, "hate speech" is protected speech - despite what some believe should be the case. True, language which "incites" acts of violence is not protected under the First Amendment, but "discrimination"? The boundary of what constitutes language that incites is high; consider that the Westboro Baptist Church who intentionally protest at military funerals with the most heinous of speech - clearly intended to "incite" IMO - was deemed by the Supreme Court in an 8-1 decision to be protected speech.
    In fact, every single European country has laws specifically restricting certain speech (many along the lines of so-called "hate speech"), so "free speech" is not so free in European countries.

      The point about staggered start times for the school day is valid--allows the bus fleet to get all the students to/from school. Each school district sets their own schedules. My city started with high school, then elementary, then junior high (middle school). Some of the overcrowded high schools also had a late day schedule for the freshman class ending around 4:30-5pm.

    I, too, will avoid videos reacting to this woman. One thing I wanted to say, though... The US Constitution is fundamentally unique. We aren't granted our rights here by the government. They simply exist. Our constitution says what the government can't do, not what the people can do. No, Ireland does not have freedom of speech. Freedom isnt freedom if it can be removed by the government or easily voted away. Also, our President doesn't have power over our sales taxes, that's a local government thing.

      It started in steak houses. Non-steak food that wasn't eaten was left on the plate, but the leftover steak was brought home "for the dog". You literally received a little bag, sometimes with a dog illustration on the bag. You scraped your plate into the bag and fed your leftovers to your dog.
    People fed their dogs their leftovers before dog kibble was popularized in the 1950’s. Kibble was advertised as healthier than leftovers by dog food manufacturers.

    A doggy bag was an actual bag decades ago. Then, at least in America, it was rude to take home any of your food at the restaurant. I don't know why. But the patron would say, "Can I get a bag to take some of this home to my dog?" and blame their pet for wanting to make the faux pas of doing what society frowned upon. I can see a restauranteur turning up his nose to his food going to the dogs.
    I would think that a restaurant manager would think, "Oh! They ate until they were full! But they liked it so much they want to eat it again!" because everyone knew the food was going to be eaten by the patrons.
    The patrons won out, asserting they paid for it; they should be able to keep it.
    Nowadays, instead of the disdained term "doggy bag," people ask for a box to take their food home. Or I ask for a "to-go box." Every restaurant has clamshell boxes like at fast food restaurants, and no one is shamed for wanting to take their delicious food home.

I may be wrong but that is my understanding. For example, the UK government may put in a clause that hate speech will not be tolerated and is against their 'rules of free speech'. In the US, the rule is that the government cannot create laws or enforce rules that prohibit a persons right to their freedom of speech. Even if it is hate speech the government is not allowed to regulate it.

Most of the time threats are just ignored, but if someone thinks you might actually act on the threat you can be prosecuted for it. @@benjaminkeller4314 I had a law instructor back in the 90's who would disagree with you regarding the "fire" case. But yes, common sense restrictions regarding speech usually fall under some other law or regulation.

      @@rtyria I don't KNOW if the thing regarding the "cannot yell fire in a theater" case I saw discussed in the documentary is or was true. I just know that I've seen something that disputes the idea of that actually being illegal. If in fact this is based on a real case then perhaps there is some precedent there that, if left unchallenged, would determine the law in that scenario. But still... that may fall under some incitement laws that are not to directly regulate freedom of expression. The most important thing about the argument, is that the US government cannot regulate hate speech, cannot add laws that prevent you from 'speaking out against the government itself' or regulate your right to share your thoughts or opinions no mater how bad, unpopular, racist, sexist, etc those opinions may be. Now... government colluding with institutions like youtube, facebook, x, etc to regulate visibility of those opinions does cross the line. And just because the constitution protects free speech that doesn't stop government powers from trying to stop it. Stay vigilant my friends.

    The “World Series” in baseball has actually become more international than it’s ever been. Just because the sport is predominantly played in the US doesn’t mean that there aren’t players from many other parts of the world that compete in it, like Japan, Korea, Mexico, countries in South America and in the Caribbean and Canada. So, that said, the best players in the “world” play baseball in the MLB.

    I lived in Atlanta GA for 10 years. School made traffic worse hell than it always is. I hated it so much, I wanted to take every weekend shift at night I could get. The only blessing of the pandemic was very little traffic. I had to work as a registered nurse. I freaking loved that part.

    Our school start times vary because we rely on school buses for most students. Schools are often far enough away that students are not expected to walk. We have a certain number of buses to transport elementary, middle, and high school; so they do each level in shifts. High schools usually start in the 7:00 hour, elementary schools in the 8:00 hour, and middle schools in the 9:00 hour.

    It's called a "doggy bag" because whenever a customer had steak for dinner, they would ask to take the steak bone home to give to their dog. Over time, it would include other leftovers wrapped in foil and placed in the paper bag. Now, a take-out container is provided for the unfinished portion of the meal if the customer requests a doggy-bag.

    The reason for the early school times is actually because of the bus schedules. The same busses take high school students first, then middle school students, and finally elementary students.
