The Japanese guitarist mentioned "SYU" (pronounced like shoe)is the guitarist for a metal band named Galneryus. He is my favorite guitarist. You guys should check out Galneryus! Very talented band.

Unlucky Morpheus are like the super metal group of Japan and class themselves as technical power metal, but for some reason are not as popular as they should be. I think one of the reason is from what I have seen, is Japaese fans seem to like one band and stick with that one, a bit like football teams, unlike the west where we like a music style and like the bands that play that way, also they started out as as band that did music for manga/video games. Another reason is that they do thier own stuff, they don't do anything with record companies, so they get no promotion, also they don't really have the buget for a big flashy video. They don't realy need a record label due to all the money they got from the manga/video game music, which allows them to do what they want, and not have an over reaching hand telling them what to do.
I am going to see them play in London in October @ Metal Matsuri with 9 other Japanese bands.
Another good song is "Knight of Sword". They also have just released 3 live videos one of which is "Angreifer", but that will have to much growling in for some people, there is a bonus that they have the violin take over the lead guitat role in the song as it was written before Jill joined the band.
They released what can only be called a jazz fusion album this year, a long way off the style they normal do.
    The Band:
Fuki (Female (singer)) - from loads. There was a fest. where she was on stage with 5 bands.
Jinya (guitar) - UNDEAD CORPORATION, Carbonic Acid
Shiren (guitar)(Growls) - ex- Yousei Teikoku, ex- Denkare
Fuming (drummer) - Galneryus, Thousand Eyes
Ogawa Hiroyuki (bass) - Carbonic Acid
Jill (Female (Violin)) - Rose Noire, Hollow Mellow, Fuki
Shiren has to be one of the best guitarists around. He and Fuki started Unlucky Morpheus 10 years ago, last year they did a 10th year anniversary tour in Japan. At the start of last year he left the other bands due to tenosynovitis of the arm, but stayed with Unlucky Morpheus, as it was the one he started and because it's not really full time it gave him chance to rest his arm. He has also been in the Kami band with Babymetal.
Fuki, what can you say about Fuki apart from she has to be one of the best singers in Japan and has to be the hardest working. She has just released a solo album with different styles of music on it. There are 3 video's from the album all different, you may like to give them a try. "Bloody Rain", "絶戒のJuliet", "Kamisama wa Kitto".
絶戒のJuliet has to be my favourite, and not because the video is just Fuki and Jill, but that does help :)

Another good song by them is Cadaver/Revadac, which has a bit of a musical trick. I'm a big fan of this band, especially the singer, she's perhaps a bit over the top but great nonetheless. If you're interested in another Japanese band I would recommend Ningen Isu with the song Heartless Scat.

Babymetal is the juggernaut of all these bands. They did two nights at the Tokyo Dome, 55,000 people each night. First Japanese band of any type to perform on one of the main stages at the Glastonbury festival in the UK. They are doing their 1st US arena at the LA Forum which holds about 17,500. Band-Maid in contrast are doing two performances at the Echoplex in LA which seats 780. They really ought to be bigger than they are. I don't think Unlucky Morpheus has ever performed outside of Japan, and Lovebites has only done Europe. Their management probably has to lot to do with it. Asterism, which is a Japanese 3-piece metal band of teenagers, got invited to SXSW in Austin. I am sure Yamaha had something to do with that. Not that they aren't great, you should check out Asterism by the way. "Rising Moon" ua-cam.com/video/IfxMi0Bx4x0/v-deo.html

From the little bit of research that I have done, it shows that Baby Metal is an industry made band and have way bigger backing and able to get way more push for festivals and worldwide touring. This proves that the music industry still has the power to create bands they are able to force feed us and the fans will love it. I have always hated this about the music industry. Maybe Baby Metal has more ability to do there own thing now. I have found out recently that there are bands that have been around way longer and done US shows and heard that X Japan did Coachella festival in 2018. Apparently only few Japanese bands have ever played the US on a large scale touring platform. I wish some of these lesser known bands had the ability to tour here in the states to get more exposure. I known they would do well even if there only played smaller venues. Maybe someday soon this will happen. Thanks for the view and comments, we love all the feedback from our viewers and appreciate them all. \m/

@@shoestring413 Amuse is pretty hated by Babymetal fans but I am sure Amuse's connections are why they got invited to perform at the Budokan years ago and Glastonbury recently. Another major Amuse act, Perfume, performed at Coachella this year. Band-maid is under the Avex Group which also has a lot of acts but Avex's acts don't seem to travel outside of Japan as much. Hell, there is a picture of the Prime Minister of Japan with Sakura Gakuin, the parent group of Babymetal. In Japan you need strong management to get anywhere.

rakjr6 That’s unfortunate for them to not have the big backing. More and more of American bands are dropping their labels and doing it all themselves now. If they are decently established they will drop the label and get more income from the records and all of the royalties. It’s a lot more work for the bands but the income is way better. This is especially better for the bands in today’s world with streaming services and digital format being the strongest.

Wow, so much to say! Only Fuki vocals and Jill violin are female. Visual Kei brings all the glamour &gowns and real makeup (not clowns or alien ghosts), these guys are a little in that direction. I’m still not sure if it’s a permanent tattoo on his neck or not, might be just for tours n promo.
Unlucky Morpheus was originally a project where they are fans of anime writing original music for the shows/fans, took a while to convert to commercial songs and shows.
These bands are all swapping members; think Ratt, Quiet Riot, Dio mid 80s, slash tried out for poison!, so the tattooed guitarist is in Yousei Teikoku, check “Astral Dogma” ua-cam.com/video/_EeYxtAeaX4/v-deo.html
Singer Fuki just turned 33, had been on 85 releases!, very sought after voice & lyricist. First was Light Bringer: whose Mao’s keyboards is in Lovebites, Mardelas, Fuki Commune, anime’s, and more (you know, those invisible background keys, even Ozzy did it). Fuki Commune also has BabyMetal 8string guitarist Isao. And my fav of hers is all female Doll$Boxx (more on that another time). Of course she does tons of guest work, like for Syu’s recent solo album Vorvados, here’s Reason ua-cam.com/video/958z1pk9_Ns/v-deo.html
and Syu’s main band Galneryus doing Angel of Salvation ua-cam.com/video/nsi9HEmZl9Y/v-deo.html
There is a prevalence of dramatic power metal the Japanese visual oriented prog thrash & even pop metal scene. I think the reason BandMaid is growing so fast is because they take a step back from the operatic and add a dash of Guns N’ Roses. Don’t think any of them sell that much in Japan. BabyMetal is huge worldwide, but kinda peaked two years ago, at least in the novelty/UA-cam sense. And Lovebites pulls directly and intentionally from British & German power metal, Helloween, Maiden, they use Nightwish’s mastering team, they are huge over there, actually had their debut (headliner) concert in London, write all in English for a reason, top10 albums over there n such, but just haven’t cracked the states. Yet.
I forget if you’ve seen Mardelas yet? They’ve got a new single, vid,&EP, but I’ll take you back a year to their 3rd full album with a spy theme. Actually two tracks in one cool video World vs Honor, just might be what you’re looking for... ua-cam.com/video/UGLNnnoH5ZM/v-deo.html

This whole Visual Kei thing has shocked me in a good way. We have only dipped our toes in this pool. There are so many cool bands for us to discover, its like when I was a teenager all over again. We are fairly ignorant to this genre and are slowly learning about it and what all it has to offer us. LoveBites and bands like this are more what I prefer! thanks for the view and comment \m/

I’ve been following lovebites for 1.5yrs now, but just heard their first full length “Awakening from Abyss” on a hiFi and it Sounds really good, rhythm guitars just slicing. Check the songs Hammer of Wrath and Apocalypse (no official vids tho), written by the bass player/founder Miho, with advice from Mao the in-demand keyboardist
And they can actually shred live too. Probably their biggest hit Shadowmaker sounds good even on this fancam from a British metal fest ua-cam.com/video/hYDXlTxV-jI/v-deo.html

Yup. Closer to the glam scene than XJapan, thus radio friendly, maybe a dash of Rainbow. Took a long time, but because they host all female rock festivals still/again, it’s a pretty straight line from the 80s to the girls metal scene that took off about 10yrs ago. Btw, this was the first “western” rock ever seen in North Korea from their civil war til the late 80s, must’ve been the shock they all feared!

I think UA-cam has eaten my comment...or at least I don't see it anywhere anymore. If you see this twice please excuse me and tell me shortly, then I will delete this comment.
You asked about a bit of backstory to Unlucky Morpheus. In Japan there is a form of free artist marked called "doujin". If you like a manga/anime/video game/book whatever you sometimes want to create your own fanwork around it, right? In western countries we know about fanfictions etc for example. You use the characters of an established series and create your own vision of what could happen to these characters. Now in Japan this became an entire genre. There are doujin video games/mangas/anime/music groups and the list goes on. It's all self published but in a way still commercial because doujin artists are allowed to publish their work at local shops, via the internet etc. Actually some doujin Mangas become quite the collectables.
Unlucky Morpheus are one of many (many) doujin bands who write within the Touhou Project (although they did original content over the last years) which in itself is a doujin video game. That doesn't only sound confusing it actually is ^^'' So they do not make lots of money from their anime/manga music. They just might have sold more CD's due to the fact that Touhou is a quite famous and beloved franchise. The main money these guys earn are from the other bands they plan in which actually are under contract (and without which they couldn't pay for creating stuff like this! You need to remind yourself that they pay for everything out of their own pockets!)
Babymetal on the other hand is a hybrid between a metal formation (the kami-band) and an Idol group. Idols usually start when they are very young, they are entertainers first and musicians second. You can meet them and support the career of individual girls by financing them, buy their merchandising, follow the bands they are in etc. It's a weird concept in my opinion (and one which quite often leads to prostitution in later life). The girls from Babymetal became somewhat independent with time.
If you look into the Idol world and the financing which goes into these groups Babymetal isn't actually THAT huge. They are more popular around the world and a lot of that comes from playing festivals. I don't have anything against the band or the girls (I think they work their asses off and are quite admirable performers) but they weren't the first nor the most original band to combine pop and metal and they don't usually play massive concert halls outside Japan. Actually the last Band-Maid Tour was sold out much faster in several countries than Babymetal's tour does right now. Band-maid don't have such a huge fanbase in Japan though (which again is mostly due to them not being Idols).
In short: Idol bands: HUGE financial support and lot's of pressure on the artists, bands under contract: Limited financial support and contracts about how much they need to release and how much concerts they need to play etc, Doujin bands: No financial support and all the freedom to do whatever the hell you like while enjoying the free advertising of your chosen franchise
To say that a lot of bands only become known due to Babymetal doesn't sound right to me either. Show-Ya where already known in Europe in the 80s and the first huge wave of Japanese metal transferring into the European and American markets was around 2004, way before Babymetal where in the making (I am inclined to believe that the success of bands like Dir en grey, Kagerou, MUCC and D'espairs Ray which all played huge metal/rock festivals outside Japan in the 2000s might have started the idea of creating and in how to promote Babymetal in the first place).
Before I started to watch reaction channels about 2 years ago I hadn't even heard of Babymetal and at first I saw them solemnly as an Idol band so I didn't even consider listening to them (again, that was biased of me. But it still shows that japanese (female)bands are known and famous inside and outside Japan regardless of Babymetal).
I would suggest watching a live performance of Unlucky Morpheus next. Either "Phantom Blood" or "Violet" would be nice :)
But I saw a lot of people suggesting "Knight of Sword" and "Cadaver/Revadac" which are pretty amazing as well (they just have been covered my many reaction channels before)
