- Well, I couldn't resist. Had to do my own comparison of the mid range BB1024X and the entry level BB424X to satisfy my curiosity. As I expected, the 424X plays and sounds great for a bass in that price range. The 1024X does top it in build quality, playability and sound IMO, but I wouldn't hesitate using the 424X live. It's definitely a keeper, as is the 1024X. Wish I had the top of the range 2024 to throw in the mix, but alas it's an expensive piece.
The "bass less" backing track is by the Funkdawgs. Both basses were recorded through a friends Monique preamp into a Roland Quadcapture interface into Sonar LE.
Great comparison 👍👍 Yamaha BB basses are amazing instruments, I have 2 BB424’s (one with flats, one with rounds) and they poke thru the mix beautifully 🎸🎸🎸
I have a white 1024X. Beautiful bass with exceptional tone like a grand piano. Very heavy though so I don't gig it very much.
Yeah, they are definitely on the heavy side, but the sound is amazing. Try a nice wide padded strap, but I get what you say. Mine is around 4.4kg.
Have a 424 and gig all the time with it really craving a bb2000 from the 80's! I've seen a few on ebay aswell
I have a 424 and i agree the 1024 sits better in the mix and as a sweeter/rounder tone.
Excellent comparison and great playing! Helpful as I'm weighing up which one to get! Not a lot in it - which shows what great value the 424s must be. I thought the lows were slightly more clearly defined with the 1024. Loved the tone in the last section.
Thanks David. If you can get a good price on 1024X, thats what I'd go for. just more refined in build quality and sound.
I think the black one sounds cleaner and fuller.
You've improved since 2012.
Not a bad review. The 1024 seems more controlled and even, a bit more substantial with nicer clearer highs and lows.
Not a shocking difference tho, I like 'em both, for the money I'd go for the 424 but I'm considering a second hand 1024X (also black), think I'll go for that one.
Thanks!
Exactly my thought. The 1024 is definitely more even sounding. The more pronounced mids give it a fuller sound too.
I got the bb1024x and its great.most p basses tend to sound agressive anyway you play them, this one is worm and mellow but can sound agressive if you play it hard.Made a change to the controls so now its volume volume tone instead of the pickup selector.made it a much more verstile bass.
Leo Nidis congratulations......it's a terrific bass for sure.
Just bought a1024x. Lovely bass!
Congratulations, it's a terrific bass. I'm actually having some problems with my 424X at the moment.....the pickup switch is very noisy and at time the volume of the front pickup totally cuts out. No such issues with the 1024X which is as good as the day I bought it. Even more reason to go with the 1024X rather than the 424X.
Yea, I've had a bunch of basses over that last few years and the Yamaha suits all my needs. I thought about buying another one eventually. Sorry about your technical problems. Mine is dead quiet. Glad I was able to go for the better model.
T.I.N Mateus The recording sounds great. Nice playing!
Not super different but to my hears the 1024 has deeper and more defined low-mids giving it the ability to slightly better sit in the mix ... I heard a comparison of a BB2024 and s 1024 ... 2024 is also slightly better but I can’t honestly justify the price difference .. Yamaha should do something in this regard I believe
I think at the studio the 1024 makes a little difference. but I think adjusting the pickups on the 424 you could get super close. But live performance a normal person (non musician) wouldn’t hear the difference. maybe the 1024 it’s louder but, You can always tweak your amp
1024 has a deeper, warmer and tighter sound.
I totally agree with you.
Maybe it's just me, but it appeared that you were more "at home" on the 1024... Which is cool... I got my 425x a few months ago and love it... I might have to spring for the 1025 or (GASP!!) 2025 in the future... It's been working out really well for me...
The action on the 1024 was a bit lower so maybe that made it look more relaxed. I just bought another used 1024x.......gonna have it refinished in something other than black or white :-) Faded dakota red maybe with a tort guard.
That's awesome!! :)
Better yet,.....an older BB450 is practically the same bass. Same configuration....and they make great slappers.
Great review, thank you. What are your thoughts on the BBP34?
Sorry, I haven't tried the BBP34 so can't really comment. I'm really happy with my BB1024X.
1024 has a more "delicious" lower tone, other than that I can't really tell...
Over time I have come to really appreciate the better build quality of the 1024X. The pickups are definitely much better.
Imam u kolekciji i ovakav bas ali petozicani.Od ova dva basa crni ima malo puniji masniji ton.
Hvala Gorane.
The only real difference i notice is that the 1024 has a richer low end other than that very similar
Yeah and it costs double the price of 424.its really not a good deal. We'll it wasn't a good deal, cause they are out of stock new, you can find them on the second hand market.
Sound the same ..🤔
Hi Belman5:
I am planning to start play some Jazz, I would like to know your opinion on which could be a better idea, a BB424X or a BB425X, last... I being playing a 4 string Bass Guitar all the time, do you think that if I go to a 5 string would be harder or will be more or less the same? Your opinion is well taken.
Hi Paul, honestly I think a 4 string is more than enough. A lot of traditional Jazz is played on double bass so a 4 string electric bass will give you the same range. if you need to go lower than E then you can always buy an octave pedal. 5 strings also means you need to put extra work into muting the low B string to stop unwanted noise. It means you actually play differently. I always feel less free on a 5.....and even though I do own a 5 string bass, I still prefer a 4 string. If you can find a BB1024X for a good price I'd gonfor that over the BB424X. This is all just my personal opinion. cheers.

Hi, thanks for the advise......!!!!
thanks grat demo. Is there a tonal difference between 1024 and 1024x?
Maple Green The x means it has a pickguard. Soundwise they should be identical.
Hey there, did you experience any hum with the BB424X?
No, no hum at all from either bass. But the 424X does have some static noise when switeching between pickups. No such noise on the 1024X.
+Belman5 thanks for the reply man ✌🏼️
Seems like 1024 has better much rounder lows than 424 IMO.
So is the white one the 1024?
The white bass is the 424X. The black one is 1024X. Cheers.
1024 cuts thru mix very well. 424 does not
Abolit not true at all.I use my 424X only for recording and I can tell you it SITS PERFECTLY in the mix,no need eq or compression, its that good.
What?? You must be in some crazy band. I am playing BB424 and it's sound was always like an axe in hard rock, pop, funk bands
There's not a $500 difference...
Personally, I feel that there is. If you can save the extra cash then the 1024X is the one to get. I still have them both and hardly ever play the cheaper one. A video doesn't tell the full story. If you can play them both you'll know what I mean.
I appreciate your input 👍🏿
@@farrgone I recently bought a BB734A, the gloss burst version. I highly recommend trying one of those. Incredible value for money on that one and its active/passive with a passive tone control. Great sounding bass too and a bit more versatile than the 1024X. John Patitucci is using the 5 string version in one of his bands.
