- BR Blue liveried Class 08 08871 is seen here Shunting, what are mainly Steel carrying wagons being prepared for the evening Speedlink Service. These shots were taken from high up on the North Bank which gave a great view of the yard.

Excellent. proper shunting by proper railwaymen. I was about from about 1991 but stills only. Wished I'd had a camcorder back then, the things I saw!

Thanks for sharing this. It's worth a thousand shots of railtours departing stations. Great to see a study of yard operation, loose shunting and all. I still cringe when I see shots of the shuntiong diving between wagons to pipe 'em up.

Loose shunting. "Tut Tut" - H&S issue these days.
Anyway, great video and brings back many memories. I working in Tinsley Yard at this time and can name the shuting lads shown.
If we didn't loose shunt the Speedlink trains would never have got done. Begs the question: Where as it all gone?
I still work for the railway (Controller with GBRf) but it ain't like it use to be.
All this did of course take place 24 years ago when there was a much more relaxed attitude to health and safety. Practices which are banned in 2014 were permitted, or a blind eye was turned, in 1990
The area looked amazing! will have to try and recreate this with my models!

Lovely to see so much loose shunting performed - you only tend to see this in very brief clips from the 1950s/60s material. I was suprised to see it was still allowed at the time of your filming! Some interesting rolling stock in the background too - some LNER design hopper wagons and Mk i corridor seconds and a "no-handbrake" (all blue-liveried) BG (of which theren't that many in the first place). Thanks for sharing these memories with us.

short sections & the line running along the bank is all that's left, tinsley wasn't the only one to face the destructive axe healey mills has followed the same fate which is currently ongoing
I think its called gravity shunting (i think) Its quicker obviously but its would be better if it was was done professionally. :D
This isn't hump shunting -- the hump was taken out of service in 1984. It's loose shunting (aka fly shunting).
It’s loose shunting fly shunting is where wagons are hauled forward loco detached whilst moving loco accelerates away through points points pulled wagons pass loco it saves running around it was only allowed to be performed by shunters experienced in the procedure high risk of collision but exciting to do all the same
