Tim Wise states this very succinctly: Capital has no borders, and can move wherever it wants, but labor is prevented from doing so by the existence of borders.

The EU actually does allow the free movement of people too (albeit only from other European countries, and they still can't claim citizenship instantly), which is why fascists hate it so much. Ironic, considering it's basically the only good thing the EU does.
@@ChavvyCommunist I'm from the US, so I'm not super knowledgeable on the EU, but wouldn't it be better to federalize at this point? Citizens could freely migrate, and granted permanent citizenship immediately, and it would be easier to enforce laws, among other things.
@@pugduck1917 the EU already enforces laws that in a hierarchy are higher than country-level laws, but I'm afraid that federalisation would be a fair bit too much of a commitment for Europe.
capital has borders, they are called laws. Capital cannot move into certain areas e.g. I cannot as a US citizen invest my capital that is in the US into Iranian industries because of sanctions.
Thank you for pointing out that unguarded borders used to be the norm throughout most of the world. It's annoying how conservative act like open borders is some crazy unproven extreme leftist utopian idea.

It's always disturbing to hear how angry conservatives are about immigration, but it's even more disturbing to hear anti-immigration rhetoric and policy coming from Democrats.
Democrats aren’t actually progressive, they just are a little more marketable to dishonest assholes, while Republicans and Conservatives in general are more marketable to “honest” assholes.
socialists do it too (fuck you, Angela Nagle). even some misguided supposed libertarians.
I'll let you in on a little secret: (most) Democrats are also conservatives. The US Overton window ends before the Left begins
I like how it ended on a hopeful tone
We are a weird species. We create so many artificial impediments for each other that have no benefit.
it does have a benefit for someone or else we wouldn’t do it, just because it doesn’t benefit the masses doesn’t mean it’s not benefitting somebody.
@@aquariusangel816 True. But the long term cost for our species is high. Just ignoring climate change is going to have a huge cost for everyone.
People who are for 'free trade' but not for open borders are hypocrites. Labor is a market force. If you want to open the borders to trade, that has to include labor.
You helped me realize I'm an anarcho communist too. Always was. Thank you for helping me find others who see it this way!
BTW: I grew up in "Socialism", in Tito's Yugoslavia. I think it's actually better for all of us to be "equally poor" (materially not worrying about survival but not have anything meaningfully more than personal property; I grew up in a big family and never felt I lack anything until we had to flee to Germany, were I,in school, quickly learned about "brands" and all that shit) than some poor and some rich.
I'd never trade growing up that way for all the riches in the world. (I know the system there wasn't good either).

Great video; learned more on immigration in 25 minutes than I did over the last year. Loved your citations and books to read on this subject. It is ironic that the typical white American strategy to create the conditions that cause racism, poverty, or increased immigration and then blame it on the same groups they oppressed is pretty much the bane of America's story in many respects. Keep making the videos; you are doing a great service online
Well, that had me in tears

They *are* mutually exclusive. One cannot have enforced borders *and* free markets; one can have one...or the other.

I'm a 2nd generation Mexican American and my parents told me about a time people were allowed to go freely between the US and Mexico and most people were chill about it. They said Mexicans and Americans had a greater sense community and friendship. Wish we could go back to those times.
That's exactly it isn't it - people go back and forth. Where you have such tight restrictions people are scared, not just of staying, but of leaving because they could be prevented from getting back into the country - leaving to visit family, to, if the situtation back home has improved, or new opportunities are present, to travel back to work for a time, or to retire but still be able to go back and forth to visit extended family in the country they were working in as a migrant. It traps people inside as much as outside.
If you travel to a country on a limited visa then overstay - which is one of the main causes of someone finding themselves an 'illegal immigrant' - then they know that the only way they could realistically get back in once back across the border is via an 'illegal' route.
People don't leave home because they hate where they were born - often the opposite is true. They would love to be in a position to travel back and forth.
This issue affects so many people, I had to leave my country as a teenager to go to America by myself because it was the best thing for me and my family. All I wanted for years was to be able to be closer to my family and in the end, I won a lottery, yeah a lottery, good old fashioned luck is how I was able to bring my family to the US. BTW the year after my family moved here, the lottery was unavailable to people from my country, so my family were literally the last batch of Nigerians allowed in the US via the lottery. My story is literally a fucking miracle, I have friends who haven't seen their families in like 10 years because they can't leave the US to go see them, they don't know if they'll be allowed back in and once Trump passed the muslim ban, it was even clearer that they wouldn't be allowed back in. IF rich countries aren't gonna stop under-developing poor countries and also pay back the stolen wealth then the least they can do is not make life unbearable for migrants and deliberately create policies that prevent families from being together. I feel like this pandemic should help people understand, even a little bit, how bad it feels to not be able to see your loved ones whenever you want to, people shouldn't have to choose between living in failed states and being with their families.
I'm so sorry you & your family had to experience that. It breaks my heart to know so many of us have been trying to be "good caring people" in America working to be good citizens, only to realize all of that time & energy is simply fueling an insatiable leviathan. And most of us can't even recognize that much... No one should have to suffer like this. Not your family, not anyone's family, not our human family & not our planet. I'm so ashamed, b/c human potential can do so much better, but not in the belly of this beast...
Damn dude. Just... damn.
"IF rich countries aren't gonna stop under-developing poor countries..."
It's ok to say "exploiting" here. Because it's the truth.

I'm a filmmaker working on the border area. I've been seeing this hysteria about the so called border surge. People don't really know how the US/Mexico border works. In theory, you should be able to present yourself at the border, claim assylum and be processed, but that's now what happens. People are made to wait in Mexico. People get desparate. I was working as a camera operator for a Japanese network a few weeks ago. We interviewed a family from Honduras. They said they crossed into the US at a point where there wasn't any border wall. They people don't mean to sneak on over. Their strategy is to find border patrol agents, surrender and request assylum so that they can be put into the system. The family told us that Mexican immigration officials were there. They told them what their plan was. The immigration officials told them it would do no good, as instead of them being taken in, they would just be handed over to the mexican officials right there. When the family crossed into the US, mexican immgration officials called the Mexican National Guard, who crossed into US territory and dragged the family back to mexico while US border patrol watched.
Where can I watch your works? Thank you for sharing this with us by the way.

Thank you so much for mentioning Ellis Island. It feels like as time passed the Statue of Liberty has just become a big sculpture and the island has been lost in a Mandela effect mass hypnosis.
I'm a geography teacher. I'm often at odds with what I know to be true with regards to international migration, international trade and the relationship that low income countries have with advanced economies. I have to make the concept of debt relief for a poor nation look like a favour, when the debt was actually created as a result of colonization by the country relieving said debt. In regards to migration, specifically the US-Mexico border, the curriculum I teach has the pupils thinking that the American people are the victims, rather than the refugees being forced to flee their nations due to conflict or climate change. It's really depressing to think I am creating a generation of pupils who have little compassion to those more vulnerable in the world, which is the entire purpose of teaching geography.
Yeah, sucks that it is that way. Here in Mexico we are aware that anything we do that could make the US angry will result in punishments and sactions in the economic landscape, because we are always holding the short straw in any kind of negotiation regarding the whole northamerican region. This in turn has bred a xenofobic attitude towards central and southamerican immigrants that come into Mexico to try and get to the US because we are supposed to take care of the people that didn't make it to the other side. This has resulted in violence in our south borders to prevent immigration, discrimination against immigrants here in the capital, the fact that these immigrants are vulnerable to be drafted by cartels as cheap or free labor only to be killed within the next two years, vulnerable to human traffickers, vulnerable to xenofobic violence in the border with the US, etc. It has gotten to the point were many accomodated mexican people think that illegal mexican immigrants are "bad representation" of our country because they "get us in trouble and project a bad image" for richer nations.
I graduated with a BS in Geography (and minored in intl relations), and altho I decided that continuing a path in academia was not for me, I have continued studying up on anti-imperialism and related topics with others. I have friends who are teachers, and I know that sometimes you aren't always able to provide a curriculum that you want (either due to pressure from the education system, parents, or because of the demographics of your students). However, one of my friends who teaches English in a v conservative, rural area where many of her 10th grade students did not even know what the holocaust was told me about how sometimes, the best she can do is pick her battles, and try to give the kids a taste of nuance in a topic that they hadn't encountered before. Not to say that you should immediately start your next lesson plan about the devastation of neoliberal policies on the global south, but if you can- pepper in some nuance about a topic you think your students would be open to seeing the possibility of another side to, see if you can get them accustomed to a narrative about the world that isn't solely the same American propaganda we're fed through our education systems, media, and each other. I feel for you, Geography (especially at the higher levels) is such an underrated, multidisciplinary subject that helps provide a perspective on history, society, and (obviously) the world and it pisses me tf off how often we're dismissed about subjects we have valuable insight into

I used to be one of those staunch Conservatives who advocated for a wall. Then I became friends with a Syrian refugee and heard his personal stories of escaping violence and losing family members. What really convinced me that our immigration system is broken is that he was unable to attain residency after years of studying in the US and volunteering in the community. A man who tried his hardest to represent Syrians in a positive light and embraced American values was told to go back to his war-torn country where none of his family lived. He did everything legally and was denied due to an inhumane QUOTA. I don't know what happened to my friend, but he was more deserving of American citizenship than anyone else. I hope one day I can help change the US immigration system because my friend deserved better and it makes me ashamed that my country failed him over a quota.

"A nakedly bigoted argument is inherently worthless." Correct.
In addition to the data and excellent fact-based arguments you've presented here, we can also argue in favor of the abolition of borders at a metaphysical level. Indeed, our world is not a planet of many nations, but rather a planet of one species. There is no "them." "They" are really us. We live in one world, and we all must learn to share it harmoniously, or we will never know peace.
Glad this channel exists!
Thank you for bringing how the discourse on immigration is focused on "legal vs illegal" that gives many white people and other American citizens an excuse to racist and xenophobic. Turkey is 15th in the most carbon emitting countries, which doesn't surprise me. Most people still believe we are an underdog country, but we're enforcing border rules, bombing "terrorists" every month, but also funding other "militant groups" to fight for us. We're not the same country as we were in WW1. We're now the oppressor of Kurds, Armenia, and Syria. We accept refugees, but we are also responsible for their displacement. We have one of the biggest military forces in the world, but there is conscription, you can't opt-out. We bomb people indiscriminately and show the footage on daytime tv for propaganda, and when those people retaliate, we call them terrorists. We've been doing nothing but bombing to resolve the conflict with Kurdish people, and when they try to use our "democracy" and get into the senate legitimately, we call them terrorists and arrest them. Turkey turned out the be a good apprentice of USA.

This video has made me think again about the increasing popularity of the idea of independence in my country. I wonder what your take on it might be. I am in Wales and support for the idea of Welsh independence has increased hugely, especially since Brexit. It's never been more than about 20% previously, but recent polls suggest support is approaching as high as 40%. This would, if it ever happened, entail a real border between England and Wales. I'm not sure what it would look like or what we would want this to look like. I have been boradly in favour - not of a border as such - but of the idea of escaping the bankrupt ideologies that seem to be becoming more deeply engrained in Westminister and the general shifting further and further to the right and this seeming inescapable - to be able to be a country in our own right and enact policies more humane and environmental and actually be more outward looking than England is becoming. Less hostile to immigration. More open to the rest of the world.
Wales has never voted for a Tory government - not since about 1880. But we do keep getting one.
I agree with the message, and the goal of telling it. It lacks any real nuance, which is disappointing, but ultimately I sympathize with the goal behind framing things in strictly this way. Here's hoping one day I'll be able to cross into the US and work there as well.
