Bobbie observed that Joe's character has much more dialogue than Don's character. And she asked Joe if that posed any challenges. In buddy movies, it's not unusual for one character to talk much more than the other. Think of "Of Mice and Men" for an extreme example. In "Things Change," one of the great scenes is what I call the "honor scene." Don's character had just won a huge amount of money in a game of roulette that was fixed in his favor. But Joe's character recognizes that they ought to return the money to the casino. Joe's character struggles with a way to persuade Don's character that giving back the money is the best thing to do. Joe's character has developed insight into Don's character, and hits on the idea that giving back the money "is a matter of honor." Don's character relates to this and the idea of doing something out of honor resonates well with him. It's a wonderful scene and Joe's character is doing most of the talking, with Don listening and responding in few words. Yes, there's a special challenge for Don because he has to convey things by non-verbal means, but that's why Don Ameche is such a great and versatile actor. Don well knows and understands the character he plays. And the special respect that Joe has for Don, the actor, comes into play in their private conversation.
