I started learning this solo in 1978. All you internet guys have it so much easier. Back in 78 we had no idea how this was done and the only way to figure it out was ruining your vinyl record skipping the needle back and fourth. Do I sound old... well it took months of trial and error and watching other guys who caught something you didn’t. Just to play something that resembled this. Anyhow. I just learned a few things I think this guy has right that I missed by ear. So much easier having a great teacher show you on video with multi camera angles and tab. Eddie was so brilliant. Young players will probably never know such a radical change in popular guitar technique as what happened when Eddie hit the airwaves in 78. We all end up in the ground. What a life he had. Amazing!
Back in the 80's we used "note to note" cassette tapes. It would take me forever but I learned some killer stuff that I would have never figured out by ear.
i started learning from an 8 track then 33's i scratched so many albums tryn to learn songs then when tapes came out i was in heaven these guys today got it made they have tabs and youtube!!

i wouldn't say that much ive been "practicing" guitar for a while and EVH was on my "hardest to learn" bucket list but I actually forgot about him. When he passed i was like "OS".
I remember discovering this video a little over two years ago when I began playing. I played on and off, but never got serious about guitar until this summer because football isn't in the way anymore. It's kind of funny to me how intimidating this solo originally was compared to now. Don't get me wrong, it's still difficult, but I finally feel ready for it. 4 hours of practice across 2 days has translated to me playing solid til 25 ish second mark of the solo, this one's a grind for sure but I know it'll be worth it. My fingers are SMASHED. I'm having a blast learning it though because just practicing sounds so cool. Thanks again for this awesome tutorial!!
Been playing for around 2 years as well. I'm learning this for my school talent show and its definitely worth the practice. Good luck getting this down!
Dude I feel you. Been practicing the tapping part, and after the first day the top of my left middle and ring finger and my right index finger had blisters. I still continued and played with my right middle finger the next day, which also got a blister and the next dat my right ring finger got one. Now all my fingers have calluses😂 but I can play unlimited guitar now because of this song.
Same, my fingers look like they got sent to Vietnam. The blisters on my fingertips hardened, and the guitar strings left permanent dents in the blisters.
My brother Ted learned how to play this with "note to note" tapes he ordered out of guitar magazine back in the mid to late 80's. I never tried because I was playing a Les Paul. For anyone worried about learning this, I have only been playing guitar for three years and in just the month or so I've put into this song I've seen really good progress. I honestly think that (at least for me) that opening lick was the hardest to get up to speed. I'm now about halfway through the second part with all the bends and tremolo picking and it really feels easier to get down than that opening bit. I know the part right before the tapping will be very difficult but the tapping itself is not very difficult and its easy to get up to speed. So already I feel like I can play half the solo well-- and trust me, I've never been good at playing anything fast. I really think that anyone can learn this if they just take it bit by bit (especially with Carl's awesome video), so don't be discouraged by any of the parts sounding difficult. You'll get there and so will I!
I love how you say the tapping is the easiest part, which is definitely true. People are so impressed by the tapping part in particular when the first few sections are the trickiest for me. After that it's just really fast picking up til the tapping.

Eruption! It was a masterpiece and it will never be able to be played again or even a great solo like it ever played again. The reason is it was actually musical and had a smooth flow to it. The reason this is magical is because even Eddie VH could never make another one. I just don’t think it’s possible. People can write and do whatever they want but I don’t see anyone ever making a solo at the level of Eruption. Even the name is perfect. Millions of guitarist can play it now yet not one will sound exactly like Eddie. This has to do with hand snap and size as well as every variable that each guitar player has that special to only them. If you look at the math behind it all the fingers being off just a 1/1000” will change that sound and then there’s the technique. I have heard every VH live solo and even Eddie doesn’t play it like the record. I’m not sure if he can but if anyone can he can come very close. Of course to get that recording he probably had to play it 100 times

At 0:34 i cant play that fast. Is it because of the stretch, or my fingers are small, (because i'm 12), or what? Is there an alternate way? PLEASE REPLY!
just started to practice this everyday about three months ago, and just completed up to the tapping, have to work on speed, transitions, smooth the rough edges and do the first beginning to end.
ugh this song is quite difficult. I got the tapping part almost mastered in just 2 weeks but the intro to this song is hard, especially the fast licks. I just ant seem to play it fast, any tips? My goal for the summer is to learn this song
Go slow. Really, really slow. And that after that you'll be able to play fast in no time. In order to play fast you should be able to play it slow. You'll make it tho don't quit now ;))
I’ve just learned eruption because of you, it’s been a lifelong dream to someday be able to play the entire song from front to back, and I haven’t even graduated high school yet. Thank you so much man.

Me after watching tapping part tutorial: Well it's not that hard after all, will require some practice but definitely doable. I'll go check out the rest of the song. Well shit.
I've been playing about 12 years self taught. Tried this 3 years in then just left it to Eddie. Picked it up the other day and it Was so easy to me. Time and practice is what makes you better! Try learning it again seeing your comment is a year old.
True enough... When I first heard it in '78 the tapping part was the mindblower to hear.... but now trying to get the track down it's the other stuff that is more difficult. :-) Live and learn.
Really it’s not, I don’t know how long you’ve been playing, (I’ve been playing for 5-6 months) but I’ve got it down at least 25 percent, really have never even learned the tapping part. But it does look pretty intimidating at first but if you get the licks down it’s pretty easy lol.
When you really look at it it becomes quite easy, I suggest watching with the speed slower while learning then perfecting it and get faster as you feel more comfortable.
I've got the first part down, but my guitar isn't full sized, so I've run into issues on the very high frets. I'll have to come back to it with a bigger guitar, but this is a great tutorial, and you're probably the best teacher I've seen on UA-cam
@@NoahMcCully333 Nice, I've managed to learn the first few passages for now. I'll work on them for a week or two to nail them and then move on to the next bit
As long as you can play it slow, but with the right tempo and hitting the right notes, making sure it sounds clean, ect. Speed WILL come naturally. Good practices makes perfect. If you can't do it, then go even slower. As slowly as you have too, in order to start a baseline.
I've had my electric gitaur since I was 8 and only learning the odd metallica song, random riffs ect on and off. Idk why I chose this to be my first song to properly buckle down on but I did. Surprisingly its actaully going really great, I've spent 15 minutes practicing and I pretty much have the first bit down already! I just need to improve my speed a little bit but after that i think I'll be ready to move onto the next part!
9:10 my hands are small as it is and i couldn't for the life of me hammer from 14 to 17 to 20, so i ended up doing a hammer on from 14 to 17 and then doing the 17 to 20 with my right hand with tapping. it works surprisingly well
I have wanted to learn this for a long time ..... I have been playing long enough now where I feel I MAY be able to attempt it ... Thank you for posting this!!!
It's been 4 years since I started messing with electric guitars and the songs that come with it. This is the first time I had the guts to try and learn Eruption note by note. took me a week to watch a 17 minute video lol
Never did I ever think I could even attempt this ....This is amazing practice routine . Exactly how you showed us piece by piece....Im having so much fun ...Thanks man !
At 0:34 i cant play that fast. Is it because of the stretch, or my fingers are small, (because i'm 12), or what? Is there an alternate way? PLEASE REPLY!
Dude you should just practice stretching distances to play notes and stretch your hands before playing.
ok thanks
Holy shit dude are you 20 now!?
@LiamFernandez-uc4b 😂😂😂😂😂
just started to practice this everyday about three months ago, and just completed up to the tapping, have to work on speed, transitions, smooth the rough edges and do the first beginning to end.
Nice Carl! Would you ever consider doing Soothsayer?
Carl. Thanks man. I come to a couple sites to learn or refresh and wanted to say what a great teacher you are.
Learning this for eddy, RIP
Yep, Carl is a great guitarist and one of my favorite teachers. Thank you for all you do.
R.I.P eddie, such a great musician
9 mins in and that horrible stretch hands between the 14,17,20 hands killing me haha.excellent video as always
Guys I’m gonna learn this song in memory of Eddie, I don’t care how long it takes. RIP.
I've been practicing this for days now and I'm nowhere near... but it's great fun trying! Great lesson and RIP Eddie. ❤️
ugh this song is quite difficult. I got the tapping part almost mastered in just 2 weeks but the intro to this song is hard, especially the fast licks. I just ant seem to play it fast, any tips? My goal for the summer is to learn this song
it's great that you have goals.... that is actually really important.
9luckycharm111 did you get it ?
asskikker123 nah I decided to get better in general then come back to it. This would of been my first time playing anything fast
Go slow. Really, really slow. And that after that you'll be able to play fast in no time. In order to play fast you should be able to play it slow. You'll make it tho don't quit now ;))
9luckycharm111 practice as I do with the song. First it started slow, then naturally your speed will increase.
I’ve just learned eruption because of you, it’s been a lifelong dream to someday be able to play the entire song from front to back, and I haven’t even graduated high school yet. Thank you so much man.
Can you make to live is to die by metallica please
To live is to die live🤣
hey carl great set of vids on this because of c19 i decided to pick up a guitar for the first time in 30 plus years and with evh passing away not only did i decide to learn to play this i actually built my own frankenstrat though late in the game for me learning from this video has ben a dream come true still have some work to do but getting there thanks for all theinstructional vids rock on and god bless
HOW ON EARTH DO YOU LEARN AND KNOW SO MANY SONGS???!!!! GREAT JOB!!!! 💪💪💪🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘💯💯💯
I never thought i would come to the point in my guitar journey where i would actually be able to try this song. Thank you so much Carl, youre great!
Finally nailed it for the first time ever today!!!! Thank you Carl!!!!!!
epic lesson carl!
Van Halen, THE reason to play guitar! Looking forward to this !!!
I can only play the tapping section everything else is hard lmao
Same lmfao
True enough... When I first heard it in '78 the tapping part was the mindblower to hear.... but now trying to get the track down it's the other stuff that is more difficult. :-) Live and learn.
Really it’s not, I don’t know how long you’ve been playing, (I’ve been playing for 5-6 months) but I’ve got it down at least 25 percent, really have never even learned the tapping part. But it does look pretty intimidating at first but if you get the licks down it’s pretty easy lol.
I’m 12, and the only things I can play is the tapping and tremolo picking
When you really look at it it becomes quite easy, I suggest watching with the speed slower while learning then perfecting it and get faster as you feel more comfortable.
evh wrote this in his twenties. now i'm learning this in my twelves
This lesson should be in the Library of Congress. It is a great explanation of a cultural milestone.
do through fire and flames ;)
Please
I've got the first part down, but my guitar isn't full sized, so I've run into issues on the very high frets. I'll have to come back to it with a bigger guitar, but this is a great tutorial, and you're probably the best teacher I've seen on UA-cam
I suck but I'm going to work my way through this slowly, 1 bit at a time. I'll let you guys know once I've got it down and I'll post a video
same thing im doing
@@NoahMcCully333 Nice, I've managed to learn the first few passages for now. I'll work on them for a week or two to nail them and then move on to the next bit
Got the beginning down, learning the part at 7:48 atm. What about you? Have you made any progress?
As long as you can play it slow, but with the right tempo and hitting the right notes, making sure it sounds clean, ect. Speed WILL come naturally. Good practices makes perfect. If you can't do it, then go even slower. As slowly as you have too, in order to start a baseline.
Awesome Talent as well as Teaching Method!!! Thank you so much for helping my 35 year playing skills even further!! Rock On!! ( Fayetteville N.C.)
*me not even having a whammy bar but still watching this*
I've had my electric gitaur since I was 8 and only learning the odd metallica song, random riffs ect on and off. Idk why I chose this to be my first song to properly buckle down on but I did. Surprisingly its actaully going really great, I've spent 15 minutes practicing and I pretty much have the first bit down already! I just need to improve my speed a little bit but after that i think I'll be ready to move onto the next part!
How hard in a scale of 1 to 10 would you say this song is ?
8.5
+Santiago Devincenzi 50
This song is a solid 9. The only thing that keeps it from being a 10 is the fact that it's not faster than it is.
what would you say is a 10 song?
Andrew G okokok thanks :D
That was freaking dope. Keep up the good work Carl.
0:55 is the hardest part
For me it’s the stretch from 14-17-20 I physically can’t do it with all the notes ringing
9:10 my hands are small as it is and i couldn't for the life of me hammer from 14 to 17 to 20, so i ended up doing a hammer on from 14 to 17 and then doing the 17 to 20 with my right hand with tapping. it works surprisingly well
carl’s a badass😂🔥
I have wanted to learn this for a long time ..... I have been playing long enough now where I feel I MAY be able to attempt it ... Thank you for posting this!!!
Ok he's just showing off at this point 😂😂
@@landonheath7914 it was a joke but ok
It's been 4 years since I started messing with electric guitars and the songs that come with it. This is the first time I had the guts to try and learn Eruption note by note. EVH's melodies are unmatched and legendary it seems so easy to hear but when you actually try to play it it's waaaaaay too hard. It's true when they say nobody can play it like Eddie.
I just came here to Learn that high E alternate picking part😂
goin into you really got me Had to be done , nice dude, been playin 32 years and I'm seeing some hidden gems man, keep it commin, you're helping me improve my game, you whipper snapper lol ,peace!
*He's starting to believe*
Great job Carl, you're a check of a player and super teacher!
Whose here in honor of evh
You're tone and accuracy..
AWESOME.
