    Could you please mention the TBW and the DRAM + NAND type specifications. Because drives with DRAM and TLC would have more TBW and would last longer. The QLC ones and without DRAM would probably fail soon and the customers are just going to end up losing data.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  Рік тому +1

      Not true as the qlc drives are also very good now. True story... I got ac2017 27 inch iMac in 2018. I also got Samsung qlc 1tb external drive. I used it as my boot drive on that Mac for last 5 years. Created 525 UA-cam videos on it mostly 4k and ran entire computer of it. So massive tbw. No issues and never even had a slight issue. Tbw are so high now and most drives blow past the by 2 or 3 times. I made a few videos on tbw so I'm familiar but in real world anybody would be fine with qlc.

      @@craigneidel Thanks for your great video's, just found out about your channel and have 2 'somewhat follow up questions on QLC'.
      I have a very specific use case coming up soon, a NVME External drive for Games-only, now my questions are:
      1. did you ever test if the heat of these ssd's goes down in an external enclosure (where the speed is reduced obviously (so no Thunderbolt but rather usb3-ish? ( I am worried about the heat long term! )
      2. again heat-wise, do you know if there is a significant heat difference in TLC and QLC drives in an External enclosure?
      I always have specific questions come up with any hardware and nobody else seems to care/bother. Thank you in advance!

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  Рік тому +1

      Heat on the NVMe is really dependent on the individual drives from my experience and how you cool them. Some drives will run hotter and some cooler without great setups. But adding thermal pads and other elements that correctly touch the metal cases to control heat can help keep them cooler for sure. So it's hard to answer directly and I think that is why people stay away from those tests. Since if you test one setup it won't be true for all drives and enclosures just that specific case. Thanks again and I hope that helps.

    What we need with all this metal are high speed enclosures, and I don't mean the UsB-c 3xxxx values. I mean real USB-4 and real Thunderbolt 4 speeds. What good is a drive if you can stick it in a race car? I did a quick search and boy.... yeah drives are cheap these days, the enclosure market... not so much. Anything over 3000 speeds would be acceptable.

      All drives are going to have a certain failure rate. Even drives like Adata are very low. Whoa………some of those are Sata Nvme’s and they are SSD speed (500 mb/sec). Also, those ones with QLC are not very good. I don’t buy Samsung (ie; 2tb 980 Pro) because they don’t stand behind their warranty and these drives had bad firmware initially. I got caught with that and the drive went into read only mode before I could update the firmware. Samsung wouldn’t replace it because I no longer had the invoice, but gave them the model and serial number + pictures of the drive. I’ll send it back and you send a new one to me…….but…..nope……sorry. The worst part of this fiasco is that Samsung is fully aware that early versions of these drives had bad firmware. Should be a no-brainer to replace these drives no questions asked. They had the SN…….so they know it was genuine. Double middle finger salute to Samsung. Haven’t used one of their drives in my builds since then. Switched to WD Blacks. Your continued loss Samsung………..just one loss for me.

    Thanks for your video, now I wonder if I should go with the 990Pro instead of the SN850x !!? My PC came with a SK Hynik in it for boot (pretty much the reason why I'm looking at your video!) And I bought a WD Black SN850x 4TB for my second NVME slot. The SK Hynik is so instable compared to the WD Black, can't handle big files, speed drops near 100mbs after 2 seconds writing. The WD Black keeps a great speed all the way through, no big drop in speed, even with big files. I'd say it takes 2-2.5 min to my system to start... similar to my old HDD booted PC.. not normal for a NVME! So I'm thinking about cloning my SK Hynik boot drive on another WD Black, to get a faster and more stable system. Any thoughts or tips?

      I don't have any tips but give it a try and let me know how it goes. I have not had the same experience with the SK Hynix but I was cooling it quite well. Good luck with everything and if you find anything out report back.

      I just switched to a WD SN860X 4TB from the 2TB SK Hynix for the same issue.
      My SK Hynix is acting weird. It slows down to much and gets too too hot all the time.
      I gave up on it as the start up drive.
      I’d get a 990 Pro but since my
      4TB WB SN850X runs great & cooler (w/o a thermal pad) than my 2TB 980pro and the 990Pro doesn’t come in a 4TB yet, I’m sticking with the WD.
      Next month Samsung will release their 4TB 990Pro for around $350. I found the WD’s brand new for $270 each. They work great.
      It’s a little to late now.
      I’m set.

      Thats a lot of SSD's any way you look at it. As far as price goes the sweet spot for drives right now is 2TB capacity. I think Linus did a review on a PCI-E unit that could accommodate a total of 21 m.2's, he used 8TB drives for a total of 168TB's of storage.... for a cost of roughly 31k. If you used 2TB drives you would only get 42TB's (only 🤣) which falls short of your goal quite a bit, with 4TB you would get 84 TB's but the cost of 4TB drives (not everyone makes them, Sabrent is one) you would probably be looking at 10k with the controller... so definately not cheap.
