  • The WDR Rundfunkchor visits churches in North Rhine-Westphalia - this time, we get to know the Resurrection Church Heilig Kreuz in Mülheim an der Ruhr, also known as the "Urn Church". The Church of Resurrection Heilig Kreuz connects the beginning and end of our lives in a special way: Urn-niches on the walls are connected to the baptismal font by a floor band. The clock of life above the altar also presents the various stages of one's life.
In 2009, the interior of the church was converted into an urn burial site and received an architecture prize for it. Recessed into the walls, decorated with candles, the urn boxes make the church interior bright and warm. Mendelssohn Bartholdy's "Beati mortui" (Blessed are the dead) can be heard. Sung by the Men's Octet of the WDR Radio Choir, this space of life is filled with silent remembrance, devotion and consolation: for the warm and intimate male voices sing of the carefree life of the dead with God and the loving remembrance of them. The cycle of life becomes clearer here than almost anywhere else.
