If I’m paying $50 a month I’m a pretty serious reseller. At that point, I am selling my games on my own on Amazon, not sending you Phoenix to profit even more off me. This works great for someone who sells on eBay and can’t get the Amazon premium, but for someone who does, it makes no sense.
Very good decision on the pricing for collector tier. I said it in the last videos, but the value proposition for collectors doing this as a hobby isn't there if you charge money. They aren't having to look up prices and such 24/7 like a reseller. There is very little need to not just use free sites like pricecharting. I think this is a very good decision for growing the app, and maybe down the line you could have a median tier somewhere between collector and reseller. Or maybe you can offer individual features that each cost their own amount, so that each collector can customize the app to be for what they need. For example, I resell locally, so I have no need for seeing fees and such. But making Lots would be very useful.
Totally, have been realizing recently that the collection tracking features arent really our focus anyway so I'm glad I made this call back in September.

People kind of track across a few different apps because none of them are great really. Not a fan of the logo mark at all. But good on you for making it free for us poors and after pricecharting made their app free. It would be nice to see a dark mode or a grayscale option.

If there is a way to "turn down" the type face just a tad, I think it would look a better. I like the cyber/videogame theme but I think it is a hair over the top
Ultimately you made the correct decision by making a free version. I think most people watching these videos being released over the past 2 weeks thought you were crazy for charging 50$ for basic features. A lot more people are going to download your app now because it's free. You are going to be in the red for a long time on this app because of that, but over time I think it will pay off. Growing the app with users should be your ultimate goal here regardless of price. Smart move
I thought I misheard the price so I went back to make sure I heard 50 lolol. That price was CRAZY for new people getting into the space. I just started buying old nintendo games. I couldnt justify $50.

Caleb, been watching your vids along with Retro Rick since the pandemic. I run a few businesses myself and handle the marketing all by myself (physical and digital products), I did quite a bit of repairing and reselling on the side to fund my collecting and I've always thought your content was super fun and your style super engaging. It's been cool watching you pursue getting this app built. I'm not sure if the app will pay for itself or not, but I'll tell you it looks super awesome and I'm 100% positive it will be an awesome app that I can’t wait to use the free version of! That said, I’m not sure the numbers make sense. I don’t know the market as well as you do, but to just make back your $100k investment (and that doesn’t count ongoing costs, maintenance, etc.), you need to get 2,000 people to pay $50 at least one time. Let’s assume a churn of 3 months, meaning your typical customer pays for 3 months then cancels (typical for recurring subscriptions). That’s 667 people who have pulled out their credit card and agreed to give you money (and again - not counting refunds, chargebacks, ongoing maintenance, etc.), which works out to about 2 people PER DAY… Again, this is making a lot of assumptions and I’m sure I’m off somewhere. I think it can be done, but I think you’ll tap out the market of people who will pay $50/mo pretty quickly in this market. My guess is you won’t get rich off this app, but it’ll pay for itself and then some (hopefully). I’m sure you're already planning this, but you 100% have to get Riff, Rick, and all those other guys to promote you on their socials and in their vids (as well as in your own too) in order to get to the word out and get sign ups. If your goal is to provide something of value to your market, this is a freaking fantastic idea. But if your goal is to make money… I’m not sure this will do that. I think you could make more money by actually offering inside info on a regular basis, similar to how you have your discord set up. A lot of really smart and savvy business people are doing paid newsletters with information on market shifts, things to look out for, trends they’re noticing, new strategies and tactics, etc. As a casual repairer/flipper, I’d definitely pay $5-$15 per month for a weekly email on what to look out for or new tips and tricks on how to get deals (like your flipping switches for retro games idea and the like), but I don’t do this enough to justify $50/mo on the app. My hunch is the market would be bigger for something like this. I’m sure you already know this and I’m not giving you anything new, but I just wanted to put it out there. Shoot, another idea I just thought of is a $150 course. Cringe, I know, but hear me out. I feel like you could make $100k much easier by selling a course showing how exactly to do what you do - from sourcing, prospecting, checking fees, calculating profit, how to properly ship, how to avoid refunds, etc. I know that a lot of people hate the idea of courses, especially from self-proclaimed ‘gurus’, but the truth is that it can actually provide a ton of value, and would take almost no effort on your part to put together because you know this stuff like the back of your hand. I’m not exactly saying I think this is a good idea or anything, but there’s just something that prevents people from paying for apps. So many are offered for free, that it seems MUCH more difficult to get someone to pay $150 for an app ($50/mo for 3 months) vs getting them to pay $150 for a course. Idk, my business brain is just spit-balling at this point. At any rate, I wish you the best of luck and can’t wait to see what the final version of the app is like!
Cool idea! Crazy thought I had when you were talking about the scanning issue. Have you considered a “batch scanning mode” where you can hold in memory several scans at once and then swipe through them?
YES! Will definitely happen at some point, not sure if it will be version 1 or not because as it turns out the scanning side is way harder than I thought

The question will the app work when you're in a crappy internet area aka downloaded price lists so if u don't have internet in a place your scanning u have at least the current updates for that day for random systems

Also can you split up the $50 package to a $25 option? Not sure if discord access is bulk of the value, but maybe split that from top tier as an example.
Haha Discord access was originally going to be a paid perk, but as of now it's free. We may just have to gate it if there are too many members and it brings the quality down. Also I think you'll be happy with where this thing lands, so stay tuned!
Both Collector & Reseller accounts should be free to sing up and get started with. Monetize those that need extra features / use it a lot more. Maybe get daily prices once for all items, and then let premium users get real-time prices (too many API hits on prices by free users will be a loss)
That's a good thought, especially about the API hits. We'll have to play that one somewhat by ear I think. In general as a policy I'd like to reward our most consistent users the most rather than rewarding new users, got a whole vid coming out next week on the price convo though.
I'd like to know if he will sell the information he collects to other companies. Will he have personal access to what each user account contains, or can a user have privacy and hidden items from public/ Calebs view?
Payments will be processed through stripe, so whatever their privacy policy is will be what we default to. Although if you're worried about me stealing your credit card I wouldn't recommend selling us your games tbh 🤣
Nice choice. Freemium is absolutely the way to go. It's easier to convert an existing user to a paid user than to bring in a paid user from the outside.

Im very glad you made the collecter tier free for us non resellers, but i really do think you should add additional ads within the app for the collecter tier, as you would make your 100k back a lot quicker. They don’t have to be in your fave, just little side ads every now and then to make more income.
Can you guys really have to fix the scan tool I can open my camera on my phone and scan a QR code or a barcode in less than two seconds but with this app I need to try for 2 minutes at different angles in different lighting it's just terrible
I’m going to be honest, the business side to me is not interesting. Especially, when it’s just talking about business principles and apps. Since you got popular and now have people sending you games at a mass scale, the content has become very dry.
$50 for that reseller tier is still super high. I get that you can’t compare it to a Netflix subscription because one is for consuming content and the other is hopefully helping you make money but $50 a month is still a huge pill to swallow. $10 a month even sounds high to me but $50? That’s just out of the park insane when with a little extra leg work you can look up all of the info that you’re going to provide for free.
Glad to see the free tier. Still feels weird that people need to pay you 50 a month to sell to you. Your higher prices are lowered by that. That is the only thing here that confuses me. Other than that it is looking great
You guys need to keep in mind, he's not a GameStop. I think he's trying to remove the possibility of having to randomly buy 1 or 2 games from thousands of people and then never again -- that's kind of a mess logistically for his particular business. Keep in mind, even to use his current buy list program, you have to apply to use it and kind of 'prove' so to speak that you already move some amount of product. He's in the bulk business, not the one and done. Obviously there's more the the fee than that, but to me it makes sense. Full disclosure: I don't sell games because I'm a hoarder so I won't be paying the fee lol...but I definitely would if I was in that business.
Totally get that objection, let me know as the vids progress what your thoughts are, I hope you'll feel more optimistic when you see where it's landed.

Such a great idea to make the collectors one free. I am still new to reselling and that version would be the one I look at. It would make things much easier for me when I am buying to resell also, adding the discord is a plus. I did want know is that a flat fee or monthly? Even at $50 a month that seems like a deal. The moment I heard him say he wanted to charge 20+ a month for it in the first video I already knew this wouldn't be used heavily. Realistically speaking, aside from a fraction of his community using it, which is basically just a patreon at that point, the only resellers that don't watch him that would use it might be the top top % of them, and even then, why would they? Like if you're selling 6-7 figures or more on amazon or ebay respectively, why wouldn't you just use those apps that they already have, which are free? Amazon has a built in fee calculator and ebay does not, but it's not that hard to guesstimate what -12% is.
This is a huge W. It makes the growth of the app exponential, having people try and be able to see the functionality without a price gate is amazing. As someone who is super small time, I would have no use for the higher tier but will absolutely use it now.
He stated in the announcement video that he wanted to get it almost ready for release before releasing videos so that no one nabbed his idea. then hed be out 100k and not be first to market.

Or, make it a dollar and if they stick with you for some months and the higher tier works, make it free. $600 a year i think is way too much even with all the bells and whistles you could possibly think of you would ony attract people how are around your level of reseller because its too much for the average reseller starting out and thats who you said you want it for. It should be $50 for a year tops otherwise i dont see anyone getting it.
Why not just make the app all around free to use, and make other companies pay for advertising to cover the $$$ you want to make. You will get more users that way, and will probably make just as much money.
Since the quick flips is his own business, I think the buy in makes sense. It is a wall that separates him from having to deal with thousands of fake or poor submissions.

You have to at least have those small banner ads For the collector tier So you can get your investment back and maybe we can pay a small fee to remove them

Keep in mind, even to use his current buy list program, you have to apply to use it and kind of 'prove' so to speak that you already move some amount of product. He's in the bulk business, not the one and done. Obviously there's more the the fee than that, but to me it makes sense. Full disclosure: I don't sell games because I'm a hoarder so I won't be paying the fee lol...but I definitely would if I was in that business.

Such a great idea to make the collectors one free. I am still new to reselling and that version would be the one I look at. It would make things much easier for me when I am buying to resell also, adding the discord is a plus. I did want know is that a flat fee or monthly? Even at $50 a month that seems like a deal. The moment I heard him say he wanted to charge 20+ a month for it in the first video I already knew this wouldn't be used heavily. Realistically speaking, aside from a fraction of his community using it, which is basically just a patreon at that point, the only resellers that don't watch him that would use it might be the top top % of them, and even then, why would they? Like if you're selling 6-7 figures or more on amazon or ebay respectively, why wouldn't you just use those apps that they already have, which are free? Amazon has a built in fee calculator and ebay does not, but it's not that hard to guesstimate what -12% is.

This is a huge W. It makes the growth of the app exponential, having people try and be able to see the functionality without a price gate is amazing. As someone who is super small time, I would have no use for the higher tier but will absolutely use it now.

Im sure people wouldn't mind paying a dollar or two a month. Or, make it a dollar and if they stick with you for some months and the higher tier works, make it free. Im a pessimist and I cant see many people going to pay 50 a month and you are going to spend a lot o money on this app.

$600 a year i think is way too much even with all the bells and whistles you could possibly think of you would ony attract people how are around your level of reseller because its too much for the average reseller starting out and thats who you said you want it for. It should be $50 for a year tops otherwise i dont see anyone getting it.

Why not just make the app all around free to use, and make other companies pay for advertising to cover the $$$ you want to make. You will get more users that way, and will probably make just as much money.
Since the quick flips is his own business, I think the buy in makes sense. It is a wall that separates him from having to deal with thousands of fake or poor submissions.

@@retrogamerescue not everyone who resells, does it to make a full time living, so not every reseller is going to even want to use this. I am a case of that lol. I do resell for fun , I like the hunt, but I don't ask for extra discounts like some resellers and I don't try to rip people off.

Plenty of video game resellers already pay $49 a month to pricecharting for less features
