    Thanks for uploading this important video to UA-cam. My Father worked on this aircraft in Palmdale. I wish he could have seen this while he was still with us!

    It amazes me how this was designed and built in the 1950s and looks as though it could be fielded today in the 2022 as a new bomber. The contrast between it and the vintage 1940s and 50s cars and trucks following it on the flightline amazes me. This plane was decades ahead of its time and a testament to American exceptionalism and ingenuity.

    Boring historical note: On this last flight, the XB-70 took off from Edwards and landed at Wright Patterson to be displayed at the Air Force Museum. The museum didn't have room inside, and thus the plane sat outside for a number of years. In 1978 it was outside and showing signs of weathering. Some years later, it was moved inside but at a hangar separate from the museum. In 2016 the XB-70 was moved into the new fourth hangar at the museum. It is back to it's glory!

      Some Wright Field and XB-70 trivia: Orville Wright was a dignitary at its dedication in 1927, which included an air race won at 159 mph, which had to be impressive. The lowest recommended touchdown speed for the XB-70 was 167 knots indicated and the winner's craft gross weight was less than 1%.

      @@cowboybob7093 Thanks for the amazing dichotomy of the two era. Think the Wright's first flight was shorter than length of XB-70...

      It sat outside until the late 1980s. I remember seeing it outside when I was little. In the late 1980s it was moved into the big Modern Flight Gallery. Then in the late 1990s I think it was moved to the annex with the old Air Force Ones and research prototypes. At least I think that's when it was sitting next to the YF-23. Then on Oct 26, 2015 it was moved to the R&D section of the 4th building. Then in Oct 2020 it was moved around again, but I think it went back into the same hangar.

      What a waste of a unique aircraft. Spend near countless amounts of money…LEAVE IT OUTSIDE when it’s no longer used. Nothing like it has been built since.

    A true technical achievement, even if it was outdated by then. I wonder what the manpower and hours would have been needed, if it did make it to service. Very Glad that it finally got a warm hut to sit inside. Many of the Chino CA Planes Of Fame Museum planes sat in the Cali sun for years and years, in it's own boneyard. They finally they went indoors and were spritz'd up a bit. Gotta save the History!!. That old tech might be new tech once again someday.

    I think it's important to note that this was not the actual final flight of this aircraft. It was flown to the Dayton National Air Force Museum for it's final flight.

      @@davidpwade44 Sorry, but that's Wright Patterson AFB, it's final stop. The only airport, other than Edwards, the XB-70 landed at was Carswell once for the 1966 Air Force Association show, it's only appearance open to the public. And that was AV-2.
      That object Fulton is carrying around is the aircraft's log book, which he formally presented to the Museum's curator, essentially transferring ownership.

    For those that know Wright Patterson it is split up into different areas the base. Museum property has its own runway completely separate from the main flight line. Did they have to tow the Valkyrie up the road to get it to the museum? My guess is there’s no way to landed on that museum landing strip which by the way is gravel. Am I correct on that?

    • @fighter_pilot_1698
      @fighter_pilot_1698 2 роки тому +1

      From what I could find, at this point in time the museum was still in its outside state, on the premises of the operational airfield. When the new facility was opened in the early 70’s she was then towed down the road to it.
