That was a powerful lesson. I had that happen to me in the 90s with my co workers and I realized when you place value in meaningless things you usually lose in the long run. Same year I learned why black folks dont get loans like whit folk do.....If you graduate college and have good credit but purchased a Benz or a BMW you wont get no loan for nothing. Not because you wont be successful but the priorities are all wrong for the bank to trust your judgement. That is a classic lesson I wish many more of us would learn.

I have the opposite side of the story. I graduated FIT and I was an intern at a fashion house in NYC. I was part of a team of that had 2 other girls. I couldn't afford the luxury brands they had so I thrifted a few good pair of slacks and a few black tops and two pair of shoes. My team was killing it in the design competitions. Mostly I did the work, but they got to hang out with the actual staff. At the time I didn't care what ever worked I wanted the job. Two weeks later, I get called to the office and I was let go. They didn't give me a reason, but then said thank you. I go to the design room to collect my samples, sketches patterns all the things I worked on. I get to the lobby and the two other girls were there. Instead of consoling me they were like what are you doing with our stuff? I told them I took the things I worked on. They were like, this belongs to the team. I said I was taking it I did the work it was mine. So one of the girls said we knew you were getting fired, look how you dress. And why is your hair like that. Nobody said anything to you because your work is good, but you don't fit the image. I walked out the door with my things and held it together until I got home.
