Me too. Games like Prototype, Mercenaries, The Saboteur. Good times. Maybe one day we'll get to the indie retro budget open world era, similar to the indie retro fps era we're currently in.
While the story wasn't the greatest and the combat was alright I still love this series for the traversal alone. To which I think Prototype 2 does all of it a bit better.

Pretty much agree on all fronts here. I genuinely adore the world of Prototype. Learning about the virus in game and stuff online always fascinated me. Web of Intrigue was excellent, was never forced but gave more context, with just enough information to get an idea or create your own when not all the information is available at that time. Saying the characters were the problem is actually the thing that I always felt was iffy, however never realised until now. It was never cringy to me personally, it just felt flat. Like those a really bad anime dub, just barely any care but enough to get the job done. Side content was pretty ass, I've gotten all the platnium medals on all the challenges and fucking hated every second of it. Using stupid as hell tactics to get the most points (for example you use a tank and destroy others, you just hijack tanks in the area and put them next to where you spawn and get instant points.) Prototype 2 100% does it better with making them more natural, just randomly finding them and the rewards are always worth it. Wish there were more narrative driven side content. Difficulty is fucking ass, again I've beaten the game on hard, no deaths and not consuming civilians(no deaths was different run) and yeah, I've practically fully found out how to cheese areas and bosses to get past areas. Supreme hunter was 10 minutes of jumping and whipfist, Elizabeth was just muscle mass and tanks, final boss was muscle mass and random missions in between. The hunters are the worst with stun locks, staying in the air is the safest place. I'll always agree that the blade and whipfist were too op, however nerfed too hard in 2. If the game ever got a remake, better dialogue and voice actors for story, less horrible mission design, interesting side content, balancing enemies and yourself are my top ones.
Very well said and at this point I'll take a remake to fix the games many faults that hamper its potential or take all the lessons from 1 and 2 and make 3 the best damn game possible!
I remember enjoying a lot this game when I was 13 or 14, it was my very first digital game I bought on my ps3, and maybe, I completed it at least 6 or 7 times, I fell in love with the games where you have superpowers after that. I played saints row 4, Spiderman, control, and currently playing miles morales. I'll start with infamous in some weeks
Prototype 2 is pretty good with the whole "traversal" thing as well... Really, the traversal of the game kinda makes the vehicles redundant... But then your forced to use them, which is kind of baffling, but I guess the developers REALLY liked tanks and helicopters . inFamous had a pretty good travel scheme too, but this series had a little bit more freedom of movement over it... (inFamous needed powerlines.. The two prototypes... Not so much).
That's what I always found so odd, the movement is so fluent and fun... yet the game pushes you away from it? Makes no sense. Infamous had a more linear traversal system that was good fun and I love but Prototype wins that duel no question
I remember loving this game the only problem I had with it was the end after you beat the boss nothing could challenge you at all you where just a crazy power house
Éste juegos es caos en su máxima expresión, a veces no llegas a entender lo que pasa en la pantalla, es una pena que no tenga al menos una remake. Disfruto muchos tus análisis, sigue así.
I am gonna be real this is one of my favorite games of all time. Is it a masterpiece? Hell no but it's a blast to play, the campaign tells a dark story that is dumb fun and the powers are fucking awesome. Honestly this game has the best superpowers of any game I have played. I love Prototype lol.
I do wish you talked a bit about the soundtrack as well, but I guess the story and gameplay mechanics are more up your alley. As a music guy, I can never not gush about a game's soundtrack, and for me, Prototype's soundtrack was not only extremely fitting for the world, cinematic in many greats ways, and pretty unique for game's at that time imo, but they had a nice shift in the sequel. I have a preference for the original soundtrack as it's just more memorable imo, but the sequel's was fitting for that story since the protagonist and mood of that game was definitely not as bleak or "origin story" heavy as the first game.
I've gotten this sort of comment on a few of my retrospectives and the main reason I usually don't touch on the soundtrack's in games is because I don't feel I can add anything interesting to the conversation. I could say it emphasises certain moments but I can't go into any great detail because you're spot on, it's not something up my alley. If it's something to do with visuals and art design, that's right in my corner but music has never been my thing
@@MayorHairBear Respectable. And you're right, if it's not your thing to get into the music theory or technical side of music, then that's totally understandable. I just feel like in particular, Prototype's music rarely if ever gets talked about. I definitely hear people talk about Infamous' soundtrack and many other well known titles, but somehow Prototype doesn't get the same attention even though I'm sure many people love the soundtrack.
bro you deserve way more subs man. greay content, fully extended reviews and videos, great insight on the games you review and you got me back into playing darksiders again. GOOD SHIT, im a fan❤
At 18:44 to 19:14 when you describe Mission 13, yeah I just played this mission today and no joke......I got a game over like 3 fucking times, and it was the most miserable thing I had to experience in a Sandbox-style game. I just hope Prototype 2 is not that bad when it comes to its difficulty spikes.
@@MayorHairBear Well ok. I guess that's fine. Now I'm not saying I hate hard games, I do enjoy a challenge, but when a game has elements like Mission 13 of Prototype, THATS when I draw the line.
I love the non stop fun of prototype. How bases would pop up. The infection would spread around. It was truly amazing when i was a kid. Ahead of its time
I definitely remember liking this game a lot when it came out but on replaying it recently I felt the same about the story being overall an interesting concept but the cutscenes feeling just bad. I agree with the difficulty at points and that one tank hijacking mission is why I don't play the story anymore. It is a fun sandbox game to kill a little time and if I want a little more structure I try to get platinum medals on the side missions but even those are just kinda meh, I'll usually just do one or two each time I boot it up if I feel like it. I still like playing it every so often just because running around is so fun and you can just create your own chaos mucking about the city. There were definitely a lot of interesting ideas that gives the game a ton of variety to mess around with but it feels like an overall lack of focus in much of anything besides maybe traversal that everything just lacks a little bit of polish. Great video and well scripted, you hit the nail on the head for my personal thoughts on the game for sure. Can't wait till your Prototype 2 retrospective.
Thank you mate, I'm stoked you enjoyed the video! A lack of focus is a great way of putting it, it has so many great ideas that unfortunately are poorly executed. Prototype 2 has been a lot of fun to revisit so far!
when i was that age, i was getting into Ultima Underworld - the Stygian Abyss.. i did play a bit of prototype back when that came out too though. but i was about 30 by then
I remember when I was too young to actually remember these games and I only really watched my uncle play it I would always ask him what was that game that was like assassin's Creed(Alex's hood) but you could jump off skyscrapers
I attempted this game after playing Prototype 2 and I tried standard difficulty thinking I would be fine and ended up rage quitting during the Elizabeth Greene fight. Next time I try it, I’m going with the easy difficulty lol
For the mission without powers against tanks, you have to use stealth to take them out. You can easily hijack each tank one after the other if you consume a blackwatch or military trooper. I also use rocket launchers from a far rooftop whilst maintaining zero alert level
I have always described Prototype 1 as having a good story that is told poorly. It was an interesting riff on Alan Moore’s work on Swamp Thing. The sequel has an awful story that is told pretty well.
@@MayorHairBear Definitely. But I still enjoyed it. And that soundtrack is still spectacular. That constant undertone of danger that occasionally erupts into explosive violence. Spectacular work from Sonic Mayhem.
I hope you’ll see this cause this was a great video bro. I 100% agree with everything you said. As well I wanted to ask have you thought about doing prototype competitor? Otherwise known as inFAMOUS
I remember playing the absolute hell out of prototype 2 on Xbox 360 a few years back, I absolutely fuckin loved it, I even 100% it, it was so fun to me. I'm definitely gonna give it another try now
I would like a remake with a morality system like in Infamous and the Citizen system in Vampyr. Also, we never really spend enough time with any character to actually get attached to them, there isn't any character progression.
The game might not had been perfect, but it did what it was supposed to do, being a power trip and hella fun. Even tho I would love a Prototype 3, I don't trust the Publisher to not make a microtransactions mess, with some cheap BR attach to it
There's an alternate dimension where this got the budget and the horribly overrated Infamous didn't. The Fundamentals of Both Prototype and it's sequel (which i much prefer, more variety of missions, more refined abilities and not ridiculously frustrating like this game could get) are just so sound, It took till the PS4 for infamous to feel good to play like Prototype. Not just combat/traversal the way the conspiracy targets would give you little narrative crumbs was so compelling, and although the open world stuff was super copy paste the way the world was so plunged into chaos really drove you to do it. It's just that Radical didn't have the budget to deliver, core story missions were just open world stuff, combat had potential but lacked interesting enemies to fight, stealth again had massive potential but enemies didn't have patrols or anything and the world lacked detail in how you could interact with it.
@@MayorHairBear it has flaws, like needing to assign only one core for a tutorial mission on PC. Gfx arent impressive either. But the O.S.T. The Gameplay and Movement, Atmosphere. Awesome. I play it every year in fall or winter. Can't wait to dice and slice again.
Prototype has that old school difficulty spike. New thing comes around. It destroys you for sometime. You don't know how to beat it. Then you find it's weak point. Then it's a piece of cake. You can actually complete the whole game without using the Blade and Armour once. Thanks to Musclemass and Hammerfists. Only thing that stays pretty useless are the claws. Cause you are not fighting human size enemies after like the first sequence.
So I fuckin love this game for what it is but I find it funny that most ppl don't know that it has a predecessor in a completely different IP from the generation of consoles before the 360 and PS3 and that is HULK: ULTIMATE DESTRUCTION
Have you had thoughts of making a video about that horror action adventure underrated gem named " Obscure" ? i would love if you made a video about it giving your review even if you didn't play it but know of it. And if you should play it for the first time, I personally say yes! playing that game back as a kid gave that one vibe and intensity never felt before How does that game that came out in 2004 ( if i remember correctly ) hold up with todays horror adventure genre? the only problem is i feel that the sequel didn't give the original one justice.. the sequel is just really off.... and then they never made one game like Obscure ever again, or I just feel there aren't any games that feels good, coöp game like Obscure
If you hijack a chopper you can keep the interest of the leader hunter by just shootong base bullets at it, it sont take almost no damage and its literally impossible to lose it, just jump out the heli at the entrance of the base and gg
I think sucker punch could be great at making prototype 3,but theres needs to be bigger better mission areas that lacked in both games especially the world but i love prototype
I personally didn't mind the dialogue that much, it at least didn't stick out to me enough to remember it as bad. I'm sure the bruding tone is emphasized alot with this game as a whole, revels in being grim. If anything I think a lot of the dialogue from both alex and the new MC in 2 war far more cringey and try hard as they doubled down on the dark tone to a ridiculous degree. The most this game annoyed me with were sudden difficulty spikes and obnoxious side activities. The biggest sin in any game trying to have a lot of "content" really.
What I'll say in regards to 2's dialogue is overall I found it a lot better at least funnier as opposed to try hard but when it's bad (mainly with Alex) it is dreadful.
@@MayorHairBear honestly I hated both James and Alex in 2. Idk, there were like some funny dialogue moments but overall I just found Heller supremely unlikable and Alex's shift into a total villain was far too sudden for my taste. Even with the tie-in comic that takes place between 1&2. Seems this series has always had trouble with writing one way or another.
So I have just beaten Prototype today, and uh........well....... In all honestly, I really did like Prototype earlier, the idea behind Prototype and the feeling of being a powerful demon was so cool. I also found the gameplay to be fun as well, being a Sandbox very much like GTA/SR/JC and a few others, I really do like the since of freedom that the game gives you and, while I didn't do all of the side missions, there's a huge replay value that makes it fun to replay again and again. Despite that tho........the later parts of the game were a bit.......ughhhhhhh, and the reason is simple.....its difficulty. While I do like a challenge, Prototype just got too brutal near the end game, and while I wouldn't call it as brutal and hard as Lost Planet 2, there were many missions and bosses that really....REALLY got under my skin, the last stage before the final boss in particular was also HUMUNGUST pain in the ass. Overall, Prototype is a bit of a mix-bag for me, I do LIKE the game, but there are too many elements that hold it back, chef of which is its difficulty and its lack cluster bosses. I am looking forward to play Prototype 2, tho I just hope its' difficulty is more....balance then previously.
Prototype 1 & 2 where great games.....it just it got purposely forgotten compared to its predecessors success such as "Crackdown 3", "Spiderman", "Marvel The Hulk" & "Infamous"..... unfortunately this game didn't age well...the graphics is very 2 gen ago, the open world gaming is slowly declining for more open environment linear game play.....& the game quietly found a whole & it crawled in it & doed off...... 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
I miss these types of games.

I highly recommend it
Ultimate Destruction is incredible, agreed highly recommend and you can see how Radical went from that to Prototype
Have you had thoughts of making a video about that horror action adventure underrated gem named " Obscure" ? i would love if you made a video about it giving your review even if you didn't play it but know of it. And if you should play it for the first time, I personally say yes! playing that game back as a kid gave that one vibe and intensity never felt before
How does that game that came out in 2004 ( if i remember correctly ) hold up with todays horror adventure genre?
the only problem is i feel that the sequel didn't give the original one justice.. the sequel is just really off.... and then they never made one game like Obscure ever again, or I just feel there aren't any games that feels good, coöp game like Obscure
Obscure is definitely on the list of games I'd like to cover, it's just a question of when not if.
If you hijack a chopper you can keep the interest of the leader hunter by just shootong base bullets at it, it sont take almost no damage and its literally impossible to lose it, just jump out the heli at the entrance of the base and gg
I still hope for prototype 3 😁
Me too mate, me too 😂
I think sucker punch could be great at making prototype 3,but theres needs to be bigger better mission areas that lacked in both games especially the world but i love prototype
The tone/delivery of the narrative didnt age well, but overall the game and story is still a solid 9/10
I loved the game but it could definitely be frustrating at times
Definitely has it's fair share of frustrating moments but you're right, good fun
Around the time this game came out I got Bionic Commander instead. That was a good game!
prototype has almost limitless potential, its sad that they didnt go for it.
I still prefer infamous in every way but nice retrospective I miss super hero games like this
The 2000's were super hero games prime!
Please do 2🥺also; ever considered doing all of the fallout series?
About to start replaying 2 now mate and yes, I'd love to cover fallout someday!
You're voice is incredible but if you had less little stops while talking it would be amazing
a game i love the fun i have in this game its a 10/10
The game is good fun!
Yes
Controls are admittedly clunky, but honestly I think this game gets ragged on pretty heavily which is unfortunate.
Was this game like infamous?
This is favourite game by the way
I love game from that Era where companies cared about delivering a fun experience rather than being try hard and woke
The 360/ PS3 era really was a great time for gaming!
18:50 just skyjack a helicopter
Clunky unfair combat was never fun
Great video as always!
Thank you mate, glad you enjoyed it!
🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
I mean tbh to be frank lowkey likeeee I kinda liked the dialogue and the characters great video btw
I knew some people would 😂Thank you mate, glad you enjoyed the video
21:00 you never just eat everyone and exploded! Lol
Great review. I found myself agreeing with everything you said 100%
Thank you mate, glad you enjoyed the video!
Thank you for putting this together !
