I've been banging my head against the wall trying to get this to work. I just took over IT in my company and have no training, you've saved me! Thanks again
Very informative. Thank you! Check with the vendors for their .msi files. Many of them also tell you flags that you can use in an .msi editor (Orca - very useful!). I'm installing Bluebeam Revu and I am able to insert my product key and serial number into the .msi using Orca. Saves the end-users and myself a few steps post deployment.
Matt Dickerson Perfect, I'm working on developing an MDT environment at my workcenter currently and this will come in handy for sure. Is Orca a free program?
I personally like to customize the apps per client. I usually rename them by version /company name and tweak and options. I usually us admin studio to create MSI/MST packages. I'm doing a project for a smaller company and wanted to brush up on MDT 2013 (as it has been a while since I have used it). Your videos are great. Keep them coming. Peace
Keep in mind that some vendors will not support some modifications. Creating an MST is pretty straightforward and supported, however, if you use Admin Studio to recreate an MSI (such as using Admin Studio's Repackager), or modify the MSI directly, the vendor will not support it. Admin Studio is also a pretty expensive option if all you are doing is creating MST's. MS has a free tool called Orca that will do it.
Great video, but do you have instructions on when you export a Application list and need to import that application list on another MDT environment? Any tips would be helpful.
+BTNHD I only have exe file. do you have a recommendation how to do it without converting. I am having issue finding a reliable freeware converter. Also, can you also deploy software after it has been imaged? Like instead of deploying the OS again with the application, I would like to install software after. I do not have SCCM.
How about installing apps that require multiple files, in an installation folder? Will MDT automatically copy all the files over to the target client to run them?
Thanks for the video. I'm currently working on a deployment share for my company. I'm still a little unclear on the .msi file part? Will .exe's work? Have you ever used an exe to msi converter? Also how exactly did you implement that command line notepad file into MDT? (msiexec.exe SkypeSetup.exe /quiet /norestart /qn) Did you have to save the file first?
Related question for you. I'm looking for best practices on how to update your applications within MDT. Do you have to add the updated application from scratch as a new application or is there some kind of shortcut?
You never explained where you get the .MSI from. Most websites give you an .EXE file. Also, I was confused on the command line. What was the purpose of setting it to "quiet/norestart" during deployment? What happens if you didn't do this?
many applications come in .MSI form. sometimes the EXE file have command to extract the .MSI file from them. the quiet/norestart command was done because you if you don't do the norestart command the application will restart during deployment. the quiet will make the dialog box not appear when it's installing. you will only see the dialog from MDT installing it.
***** Wow, thank you for the prompt response. I truly appreciate that. I'm watching a lot of your videos now so I'll have a lot of questions. They're very helpful. I started a job recently where they're looking to bring in a new imaging process. We currently use Clonezilla, but I recommended MDT so I have to learn it. I've seen it used in a business infrastructure years ago. As I'm going through the videos though I don't believe you mentioned anything about multiple images. Let's say I have a Dell and an HP and I create two separate images, can I boot both the machines to the network and from there have a screen where I can select which image to choose from?
Aidyn Kulick yes you are able to do that on MDT. As long as you have the correct driver for your Dell and HP machine imported into your MDT server you can have multiple images.
***** Do any of your videos cover creating multiple images? The drivers aren't all the same and I couldn't find any videos. At my organization we have Dells and Lenovos and upon PXE booting the only option I'm given is what OS to install and what applications to install. But I'd like to create a "profile" per say for machines that are different.
Thank you for this video! Im looking for a guide to use "Application without source files or elsewhere on the network". Have you made that video yet? I can't find it. I have som .bat and .exe files i would like to deploy to my mdt 2013. Best regards Jenny
Hello. Good video! How can I install .exe files in MDT? I use .bat file to install .exe files using "start Skype.exe /S" for exemple! But it's not working in MDT! MDT only accept MSI files?
After following the steps I am not seeing the applications being installed during the "Install Applications" task within the task sequence. When deploying the image the applications are not installing. I do believe I am missing something but I am not able to figure it out quickly. By any chance, has someone ran into the same problem?
hi bro,i'm from viet nam, file skype.msi i search not found, i convert file skype.exe to skype.msi, but when install window done, skype still install manual equal click next next on app, i want find find file skype.msi for it install auto or tool convert standard, bro help me??
Solidworks 2016 : 2. Import the SolidWorksSerialNumbers2016.reg file as administrator to populate serial numbers for SolidWorks products. please help me i dont understand this..TY
this command only brings up options for the windows installer when i use it. What am i doing wrong the command i am using is: msiexec.exe WFBS-SVC_Agent_Installer.msi /quiet
***** Adding on to this the application deployment did not work with the exact command: msciexec.exe SkypeSetup.msi /quiet /norestart /qn the dialog box pops up during deployment, doesn't continue until I press 'OK' and then fails to install. It returns the error "1639" which when googled says "invalid commands"
the command should be msiexec.exe not msciexec.exe. if you open a command prompt on your local machine and do a msiexec.exe SkypeSetup.msi file you should get a dialog box giving you all the commands for that application.
***** Thanks, I was racking my brain tried to get this to work. Did the fix but was still running into some issues. After about a day of research this is the full command that finally worked exactly as typed maybe you could offer some enlightenment. There seems to be a lot of commands in guides that I found on the internet but no explanations as to what they do.: msiexec /i SkypeSetup.msi /quiet /norestart /qn

There are books on MDT that explain it from ground up

thanks Matt Dickerson for the tip. I used Orca in the past and it's a great MSI editor.

jjaroc86 it is a free program. You should be able to search for download sites and tutorial info out there.
Your MDT videos have been incredibly helpful, thank you!
no problem, thank you for watching and support.

the proper command for installing skype would be: "msiexec.exe /i SkypeSetup.msi /qb INSTALLLEVEL=1 ALLUSERS=1" hope it helps :D
Thanks!
I cant do the same for a full instillation of security essentials. once I deploy the image it asks me to continue setup to install it.

Hi Need help for creat task sequences in MDT for install SCCM application.
After following the steps I am not seeing the applications being installed during the "Install Applications" task within the task sequence. When deploying the image the applications are not installing. I do believe I am missing something but I am not able to figure it out quickly. By any chance, has someone ran into the same problem?

How to automate the application install process..........No need for next or something.............Appreciate your help
call the application inside your task sequence.
Solidworks 2016 :
2. Import the SolidWorksSerialNumbers2016.reg file as administrator to populate serial numbers for SolidWorks products. please help me i dont understand this..TY
Create a task sequence command line to call out your reg file - after MDT finishes the installation of Solidworks.
this command only brings up options for the windows installer when i use it. What am i doing wrong the command i am using is: msiexec.exe WFBS-SVC_Agent_Installer.msi /quiet
Bryan Lennox U forget the (/i) "msiexec.exe /i WFBS-SVC_Agent_Installer.msi /quiet"

RIP headphone users
