That’s so cool! For me, this single comment makes the whole channel worth it. Love to read things like this. Good luck on the search for more P70 items!
Wow, these are incredibly rare cars nowadays, I've never seen one in person. Because of the wooden frame under the plastic, most of them just rotten away, and fell into a pile of rubble if they were left outside for decades, so not many have survived. It's a very tedious and expensive job to recreate the whole frame, kind of a restoration nightmare... but such a fun little car! It still rattling along with cool noise and smoke after 64 years, unbelievable! Where will todays' cars will be in 64 years?
I think those first composites were amazing. I own an old Honda that has panels from modern plastic (ABS) and they crack if you just look at them wrong. Seeing this still hold up is a testament to glorious East German technology. That that bit about special bacteria to compost the panels? That was 80 years ahead of it's time. Wish that woudl be possible with today's plastic.
Duroplast was developed by Auto Union group in the mid 1930s. AWZ took over the former DKW brand in East Germany, hence the 2 stroke engine. The factory name later changed to VEB Sachsenring which subsequently brought out the Trabant. The S on the bonnet of the Trabant is for Sachsenring.
Very nice video, have never seen anyone review this car on UA-cam! I got to see one of these in real life at a little Trabant museum in Prague 2 years ago.
Don’t forget DKW. All DKW Front cars were built in the Audi factory in Zwickau until 1945. That two stroke engines that were used in the P70 and later the Trabandt and Wartburg were originally developed by DKW.
@@Plisnensis I know, but in Zschopau Rasmussen, the owner of DKW and later Audi, only built motorcycles, not cars. The front wheel driven DKW F1 - F8 were all built in the Audi factory in Zwickau. DKW also sold rear wheel driven cars, but they were built in Berlin-Spandau.
P70 was the predesessor of the P50. First one with composit panels but with a 700cc water cooled 2 cyl. 2 stroke instead of the later 500 and 600cc air cooled engines.
The car that inspired the birth of a legend.
For its time it was a very modern car!
This video has started a P70 obsession for me. I have watched this nearly 10 times. Watching everything I can find on the P70 and bought 3 diecasts.

The die casts should be made of duroplast🤣
Saw this video a year ago, and it got recommended again. Came across a scale model of a P70 saloon, and an estate on eBay. Sorely tempted!

Genuinely an amazing story to look back on. The forced necessity of East Germany created some wild innovation.
So cool! My grandparents had one of those.
Didn't even know such a vehicle existed, neat!
That’s exactly what this is all about! Really appreciate you taking the time to watch.

Why did germany (during WW2) never made aircraft panels from Duroplast instead of aluminum?
This was probably your best video yet! Loved the background info about the manufacturer.
Thanks Andrew! Let’s drive 2 stroke cars together.
A nice looking car. That is one serious gear lever-and I like 2CVs and Citroën DSs!
One day I have to try a 2-stroke car...🤞
Saab two strokes are also nice! (and fast!)
Steering wheel is on correct side, nice.
It’s entirely odd driving left hand drive on the left side of the road! That’s for sure.
I live in Zwickau in Saxony/ Germany ! Nice to see this Video !
IFA also made the Wartburg car a range of large trucks and some motorcycles like the Simson and the MZ!
You just got yourself another subscriber! Looking forward to more awesome content!
@@mr.carguy654 trabant p50 and Dkw f1 coming sometime soon.

Thank you so much for watching! Hopefully you enjoy some of the other videos.
Zwickau ist the birthplace of Horch, Audi, Sachsenring and Trabant.

@@geraldwagner8739 That's right. DKW has its origin in the Town Zschopau.

Great Antique. My dream car.
Congratulations - 2T can be clean, good and strong in performance, greetings
100% IFA, similar to DKW, water cooled, my first car was a DKW 1000S.
It's super to see a video on the P70 in English. Lovely old thing, isn't it?
It's a unique machine thats for sure. Really enjoyed driving it.
Very nice video and a rare car. Best regards from Zwickau
Wow! Thank you so much for watching. I hope to make it to Zwickau some day!
@@MovingOurWorld If so, then write to me, we then get a Trabant out of the garage and drive it to the museum. so, I'll show you
This is great Antique. I love DDR classic cars.
This car is the rich man's Trabant !
That would more likely to be the P70 Coupe, now that's really really rare...
P70 doesn't have boot lid :) So this one is modified , with boot opening from P50/P60

The car from zwickau most often overlooked (clearly overshadowed by the P601), I actually prefer the early ones they seem to be less of a rushed job.
Great video! Where does this fit in between the Trabbie P50 and P601?-John in Texas

This thing is rad as hell. I love a good Trabant, so naturally I dig this.
Registered in NZ or na?
East German plates look cooler
0:52 they made a Sequel to the World War? Wow! I never knew anything about it. I bet it was totaly and radically forgettable.
Is it syncro?
Its non synchro, you get used to it quickly enough.
