  • Here is my howard gem with a Kohler K301 engine, It always starts, but is much easier to start with the throttle open and the kill switch off!

Have you ever seen another rototiller that is very similar to these. I had one that was my grandfather's it had a 16 hp twin cylinder onan, it was bigger over all and had duals and a whole bunch of controls on the handle bars. Handle bars had many positions side to side and up and down.

Yes, there are many different types of pedestrian tillers big and small.

Howard Gems were the best rototiller ever made in the world & did the best rototilling job and the easiest to control.
And anybody who doesn't do a beautiful professional-looking job with it doesn't deserve to own one! Howard has a reputation to uphold!
Anybody can do a crappy looking rototilling job with a crappy cheap rototiller!
Howard Gems were selling for around $10,000 when they quit making them back in the '80s!
Unfortunately everyone that does a Howard Gem rototilling video for UA-cam doesn't know how to run them very well!!!
There's a company that still sells almost all parts for those old professional machines.
I dearly miss mine but I got too old to run it.
Those machines would easily do an acre a day if the ground is right!!!
Very few, if any other machines, can make that claim!!!
Many others cant even do 10 square feet a day that looks even half way decent!!!

My rototiller was running good but now the hand crank seems like doesn't engage the engine

Is it the crank on the gearbox or the one on the engine?

What, no tool box on that one? 😉
The Super Gems had a nice metal tool box with a locking lid.
I always kept a few wrenches and extra spark plugs in there just in case since mine was probably about 70+ years old. 😃

My tires keeps working loose, any ideas why? It get to the point that I have to put in tiller mode to move it because then the two tires are locked in.

Each wheel has a clutch. There are springs on each wheel nut. These make simple clutches. Could be that. ?

Hi, watched a few of your videos on your gems. I have just got one but I’m having problems with the dog clutch for the rotovators, it keeps popping out. Any suggestions would be appreciated 👍

Hi Daniel, I haven't had a gem in a while. Usually with them it is just an issue of adjustment. They are pretty solid and robust, but they do suffer from lack of maintenance, they are all old now and if they have been put away 25 years ago in a worn condition it can take a bit to get them back right. I would try adjusting it first, then taking it apart. I think that part is easy to get to. if there is wear it is usually pretty obvious.

      I think that that was a Howard 350 or 300. I don't think it was a gem.
