Steve Perry has the range of a high tenor and solid alto and is considered a countertenor. He is a rare tenor altino, a rare form of countertenor, a voice that many consider incomparable.
Absolutely my fave Deep Track of any album. Trouble Child, Castle Burning, Trial By Fire, Where Did I Lose Your Love, A Better Life, Kiss Me Softly, Live and Breathe, Loved By You, and What It Takes To Win are some other incredible songs that nobody really knows.
This one of my favorite songs on the Frontiers album. Steve Perry’s vocals on this track weaves a story of rocky divorce. Steve Perry teleports you there with his voice. Neal Schon guitar playing fills in the passion and anguish of the song. Steve Smith and Ross Valory(the rhythm section) lay down the back beat of the song. Master work of keyboards and synth by Jonathan Cain. This song is a masterpiece crafted by Steve Perry, Jonathan Cain and Neal Schon. You clearly see why Steve Perry was nicknamed the Voice and Neal Schon the Finger of Love. The Kings of Arena rock in the 80s.
Frontiers is my favorite Journey album. This album literally saved my life and helped me through some very dark times when I was a kid dealing with an abusive father, with "Edge of the Blade" being one of the key songs. It's hard to get people to listen to deep Journey tracks, and I'm so glad you have found Journey and aren't just sticking to their radio hits. I would suggest listening to the 1981 Live in Houston version of "Mother, Father." It is Steve Perry at his absolute vocal peak, and is the second best live performance I've ever heard.
Neal is the remaining one that started Journey. 1974ish. Manager brought Steve in the fall of 1977. First album together is Infinity. Neal is a beast in the guitar and so melodic guitar. Him and Steve compliment each other’s talents.
Journey songs like this you just have to set it on repeat and crank it UP!!!!! My other favorites like this are ..... 'Escape, Ask The Lonely, The Party's Over, Chain Reaction'
They had Ask the Lonely and Only the Young ready for Frontiers but decided to include Troubled Child and Back Talk instead. Management kept the two aforementioned songs in their pocket for future release. Then those songs were part of movie soundtracks. Can you imagine how biig Frontiers would have been if it had included those two songs even though Troubled Child and Back Talk are great songs. In retrospect, the second side of Frontiers is the better one because it isn't commercial. Yes, Journey is Neal Schon's band. The 3 three albums before Perry joined are masterpieces and I love Steve Perry.
@scottdavidson9963 Absolutely. Starts with Edge of the Blade and ends with Rubicon. I was referring to the additional commercial success the album would have had with those other two songs. Love Troubled Child and Back Talk too. And, of course, the title track. I love JSS live version of Edge of Blade.
The Frontiers album is the moment Journey created a harder edge. There’s some really nice guitar driven Rock with this one. Reminds me to recommend one of Neal Schon’s solo albums called, “I on U.”
I was 16 years old when this album came out. Journey absolutely floored me! I have always been a fan, and I’ve never looked back. Steve Perry has a voice like no one else! Pleading with you guys to pa-lease react to “Troubled Child”. It’s on this album and it’s, in my opinion, the most underrated song Journey has ever done. You can hear Steve Perry‘s true vocal ability in that song more than any other. It is a mind bender and, telling you, it’s worth every second of listening. I cannot get through that song without crying every time I hear it. It’s a deep song with beautiful meaning and Steve Perry KILLS IT! Really hope he tours with them on the 50th anniversary tour! Journey just isn’t Journey without Steve Perry!!!❤❤❤
Frontiers came out when I was a Junior in High School. I wore out out the triaxle speakers in my Mustang blasting this on Cassette. I got into Journey because of Neal Schon but this track got me into Steve's voice too. Insane vocals on this. I think there is a live version.. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
The lyrics, in case you're interested: You've been tryin', very hard Now this time you've gone too far Your performance perfect In every way perfect! I hear rumors all around Contracts and lawyers And champagne downtown Tell me what you think You want me to do I've been always fair with you Turning on me After all we've been through You want trouble then that's just the way it will be [Chorus:] You're caught up in the power A blue magical maze Now the circle is broken In a spellbinding rage Better see if you're holdin' The wrong edge of the blade If it's sharp, if it cuts Enjoy yourself
This song is just one of many examples of the depth of Journey that goes well beyond what they're typically known for in the mainstream...and they were unparalled live at their peak...take a song like Mother Father performed live in 81...it could be argued it is the greatest live performance both vocally and musically of any song in history ever performed live...of course people can offer other examples since it's subjective...but I have never heard a better live performance in my life
great rock vibe, you;re right, B;J the guitar man is something, got to do(dixie highway live)the last section of the song is sick,🎸and pretty sure ASIA gonna like it. keep rockin,🤘⚜🤘
Journey, founded by Gregg Rollie and the real young Neal Schon, guess in 1974 after their departure from Santana, was Neal Schon and Steve Perry actually. They made this unique sound and music.
Jorn Lande (one of my favorite rock vocalists today) did a great cover of this back in like 2000, back when he could hit some of those Steve Perry notes :)
Absolutely perfect for when your best cousin take sure wife on vacation for Play some journey play that journey song. I'll be all right, be all right without you The lover
Man i am so glad y’all reviewed this song. It’s one of their best songs they have ever done. The whole band is so dialed in and synced up. Y’all really nailed this review. And your faces during the guitar solo at and don’t lie!!! ❤
Members were going through divorces and penned this song to reflect upon how messy divorces can be with lawyers and contracts downtown. Grest rocking song by Journey.
Surely one of my Favorite songs from this amazing band called Journey! the Frontiers tour was epic! Neal and Steve are Journey!! those two together will steal your soul...
Another harder-style song ( not mentioned ) is Back Talk. The songs Only The Young and Ask The Lonely were more of the style associated with the band; they ended up on movie soundtracks and were hits on their own. There was consideration to put them on the album. It probably would have pushed the album sales higher than the actual sales, at the loss of two of the rocker style songs.
Such a rocking song.. but I’ve only seen them do it live twice. Jeff Scott Soto killed it when he was on vocals for the one tour. Troubled Child is another great deep track from this album. It kind of stands on its own, in its uniqueness
You know when you're cousin when you're best. Cousin takes a vacation, watch your WIFA. It may good to play journey, I'll be out. I'll be all right without you. That's a good song for when your wife goes down. The road with your cousin for a couple weeks journey, does it? I'll be all right.
Neal Schon’s guitar mastery is present in the other bands that he’s been a part of. Santana, Bad English, Hardline and HSAS (Hagar, Schon, Aaronson, Srieve.) What else can one expect from a guy who’s hardest decision as a teenager was having to choose between two guitar icons who both wanted him to be in their bands. Those guitar icons? Carlos Santana and Eric Clapton. Can you imagine having to say no to one of those guys?
@@PaulJoeTX Yeah, that was a nice one. I love his outro solo in the song Everything by Hardline. It was a bummer that it was faded out to soon because he was just starting to really rip it on that one!
Steve Perry has the range of a high tenor and solid alto and is considered a countertenor. He is a rare tenor altino, a rare form of countertenor, a voice that many consider incomparable.
What I would call a Super Head Voice.
Facts ...
One of the deep tracks from Frontiers and one of their best!!
Trouble Child is nasty vicious. @@bryanw4637
This and troubled child are my favorites on that album.
Definitely heavy metal side of Journey
This album is total fire….We forget this is 40 years old sometimes……Playlist.
One of their best harder tracks

This song is amazing. This song really rocks! It’s all about Neal Schon and that amazing guitar. He’s ripping it UP! Love it!!!!
Neal Schon’s heaviest guitar solo, of all his work with Journey🔥🎸
MAYBE in the Perry-era, but definitely not in his entire career with Journey.
@@RustyHinge Hustler from Next is maybe his Heaviest guitar solo ever.
Heavy metal Journey!
Yes 1975-1977 was like unleash the Fury on Perry was control the Fury.@@ssRocker-nn3tp
You would be surprised how many of these artists come to see reactions from people like you ! 🙃

This song was sang with rage in mind. Rage at whatever situation the lyrics describe. I would love to hear a remake with as much energy.
It sounds like it was about, or at least foreshadowing, the problems brewing for Journey after Frontiers.
Never heard this one. 1983 Frontiers album, so epic. I do suggest "Chain Reaction" and "Only The Young" thanks yall :D Neal Schon rocked that guitar.
That mug is HARD. Every time I play it I get goosebumps.
The guitar riff is absolute FIRE
