LINUS I GOT SOMETHING TO SAY TO YOU. youre very smart and i trust your opinion over 99% of anyone else i ask,you helped me pick the right graphics card for my system and even though you have a larger viewer base you still take the time to read the comments and tweets and respond, thank you for your dedication.
Please keep doing this Linus. I know you worked hard on this and honestly, this is the stuff that makes you guys. Just going out and doing something there really isn't a quality review of and making it easily digestable and make sense to a normal consumer. I love the Mobo videos and GPU videos and CPU videos but always diversify. Although, I personally don't care about speakers, Just open and closed headphones.
Hi Linus, in this price range, the world of small studio monitors will deliver far better sound. Check out what companies like Adam, Alesis, Dynaudio, Behringer, Event, Focal, Fostex, Genelec, JBL, KRK, Kurzweil, M-Audio, Mackie, Tannoy, Tascam & Yamaha. E.g. - Yamaha HS5 pair is about $400 USD, looks pretty and sounds great.
What changed between cameras from 'then to now'? The colour grading and audio was so much better in the first half of the video (presumably back 6 months ago).
The Micca and Lepai setup I mentioned is just around that. Whatever you do, please just don't buy those cheap Logitech speakers. They are highly distorted and have terrible midrange.
$380 for these things......? It is ok Simple Audio can keep the speakers (and I will keep my money) for that price. Have you had a listen to the Z906s? In aus the z5500s I had were pretty damn impressive and great value for money.
Exactly, i still have the z-5500 and for the price they are really good. Yes the highs aren't that clear and the bass is a bit too 'boomy' but who's gonna pay that much for some desktop speakers.. you could get decent second hand home cinema for that.
///STIGTR well then don't buy something that is specifically 'PC speakers' or 'home entertainment system' is not going to get you anything that outperforms a pair of decent shelf or floor standing speakers. It's pretty easy to hook up speakerwire (fun IMHO) and you will turn out much happier in the end. Of course, you would also need a form of amplification, but you could easily find a used receiver on CL for next to nothing :) I have no idea how people could like those logitech speakers... They're loud but not very impressive
weyderwarr I have an old hifi amp (from an old stack) under my monitor, hooked into two decent speakers. Cost me £20 off ebay a few years back for what was well into the better half of a grand (£) in the early 90's. If the bulkyness isn't an issue, you'd have to spend £100's to beat them for audio clarity. Old, built like a brick, simple elegant design, a number of inputs and easy to fix/change speakers to your preference, from 2 monitors to 5 channel. Best £20 I've ever spent. Sure your not going to get the best audio at higher volumes with the 50w it produces, but for a desk? Sweet. Sure, not for everyone, but a damn good option for those willing to do a tiny bit of research and ebay/gumtree/craigslist hunting.
This was the first LTT video I ever watched and I bought these speakers (on sale) after this review. I still use and love the speakers years later and I still follow LTT. Thank you LTT for making the internet a better place.
Linus, can you please do a video on what are the best computer speakers for enthousiasts on a low budget? I'm talking like $75 and lower. tbh that's probably the maximum amount of money for consumer grade speakers I'd ever actually spend. Pretty please? :]
Love the speakers, too much for what you get. Linus, you are great at what you do. My family and I rely heavily on your advice and knowledge. Thank you for helping us lost folks out here. You rock!
Hearing Linus say Aluminium for once was so good. Gets kinda grating to hear the NA/Canadian version from Linus and The Tek. Love you guys over the pond really though.
I would like to say thanks for all the audio reviews, just gone over all the old headphone reviews and found a great buy. Without a trusted person to do reliable reviews I would be making my purchases blind (when ordering online) with regards to sound quality.
That is not a compression driver, those are completely different (a type of horn tweeter). That is a passive radiator. Don't want to sound like an audio snob - just saying :) Great review Linus, nice to see an actual unboxing of the product too
dont want to seem like the typical audiophile complainer. but the passive unit on the back, is called a passive radiator NOT a compression driver. A compression driver is what is used in high power mid/tweeters.
I just picked these up on sale from NCIX, the price was so good I have bought unheard, just went with the fact most reviews are positive. Kudo's to you Linus for going back and doing a sampled review, I would have had issues with what Simple told you!!
Incredible video. I am extremely impressed by the fact that you took the time to listen to other comparable products instead of just knocking the speakers. Great job. :)
Thanks for bringing new content to us. It is nice to see you guys bringing reviews about new categories. You should not do this all the time, but try to keep it the way you did. Compare a few of one product category as a small series and do it again at a later date using a new set of products. It makes it so much more comparable and I hope your channel stays with pc hardware at its core.
These really look good. I want these. Damn they are expensive to the point which makes them unreachable. Bose companion is half the money and even that is expensive.
linus you are awesome and really helpful for the tech world thats why as a tech geek i like following you more than any other tech review show Thanks Keep up the good work !!
These are $200 on Massdrop right now. Shipping of $50 is included. The appeal of $500 speakers for such a reduced amount seems, well, appealing. I already have some Creative Works T61 so I'm not sure if these would be much better.
supercooled Keep in mind with Massdrop, there's a chance where you will be charged custom fee when it gets to your door. I've got things from Massdrop and usually items over $100 in value will be charged. On top of it, it takes a long time to ship, up to a month if not more. Also, you have to be aggressive with Massdrop's customer service if things go south, otherwise they won't come to you at all. Amazon will have it on your doorstep in a week, and with much better customer service.
I have these and although they a pretty good, they are not $500 worth, not at all, maybe $100-$150 tops, only fancy multimedia speakers not really hi-fi.
Linus you should check EmpireMedia speakers; their speakers aren't full of whistles and bells, but are plain, simple and pretty good quality for the price.
Aww Linus. I don't ever comment, but wanted to say that you and your team are doing an amazing job informing all of us with these great reviews. I feel that your need to stay objective is reaching to the right audience that you are trying to gain. Thanks to you I've built my own rigs along with rigs for other friends and its thanks to your efforts I'm a better informed consumer of tech. Never strive for less than the professional standards that you set for yourself and your audience, and I'm rooting for you to keep up that great quality content you've provided, but take it easy on yourself once in a while and get some R&R.
I just bought a Sony D8 and replaced its Sub with a bigger 12" one (with separate Amp) for very deep bass. I don't claim that mine has clear or accurate sound, but if you listen to it, you will throw the Simple audios in dustbin. I can also switch off the Sub when not required. Total cost was 150 to 160 USD. You can buy Logitech / Creative speakers much cheap, which can out perform these, not in quality but in entertainment value.
I'm using a Creative T12 wireless and it's AUX as well as bluetooth is sufficient for me, since I'm not looking for boomy bass nor do I have the budget for such high end stuff.
It would be good if you did a conclusion video when you do a series of reviews, and make sure you include a graphic comparison if you do, it's so much easier to take in.
As an audio arts and acoustics student that attends Columbia College Chicago, I can tell you that these speakers are aimed at individuals who care deepy enough about their audio to want it reproduced accurately. I honestly only checked this review to see howbthey were with mixing audio. I think that Simple Audio should market towards the sort of people that shop on Sweetwater or Musician's Friend. These are not for casual listeners.
I would probably lean towards the Emotiva Airmotiv 4 at this price point. I think you are paying for a lot of extra stuff with these speakers like a capacitive touch surface and remote. The Bluetooth is handy I guess, but in nearfield all your music is there anyway. I look forward to seeing some more speaker reviews Linus.
Try Sonos Linus. We are Selling them at the place i´m working and i find them to have Great audio. Manly i mean the Play 5 in Stereo Setup. And with buying a Bridge you can also Control everything via Smartphone etc. Yeah it is more pricy but Sound is amazing if you ask me. Haven't tried the Play 1 yet.
In the same price range you have the Focal XS and XS book, that are very well regarded. I Think you should had considered them when you did your comparison. Personally I am better of with a T class amp and a pair of compact bookshelf speakers.
More speaker videos, please. High-end is nice, but what about budget stuff? Or better yet pro-audio monitors, which can also serve as decent PC speakers around the same price points, and they might offer better audio but at the cost of space.
Hey, if you want some good speakers, just pick up some dell speakers and subwoofers or some "basspulse" light up ones. the bass is good (hint hint subwoofer) and it will only run you like $20 on craigslist. don't get speakers that cost as much as a 2600k gaming rig.
It would be really nice if you could test a 5.1 system of around the same cost. In theory you should get lower quality audio because you are getting around 3 times more speakers (depends on if you get 2.0 or 2.1 compared to 5.1). So while i think my Logitech z5500's sound pretty nice it would be very interesting to hear how you think the audio compares. While my speakers are discontinued there is plenty of choice in that price range for a 5.1 system. Logitech do the z906, edifier and creative also have their own solutions.
I just realized some of the things I really appreciate and took for granted. -Working price and discussion link to the LTT Forum page. (no more links to search results on NCIX website. I didn't appreciate that, especially when some of them don't even work.) -The conclusion with "so who is this device really for?": It's great to know how good this product blends and how comfortable it fits into your butthole BUT what am I gonna use it for? I wanna know how this product can actually fit into my life. THAT, is how I decide if I'm buying that product or not. Thanks a lot for these 2 things. I really appreciate them.
great review even if i dont plan on buying these ever because of the price lol, but i appreciate the honesty in all your videos, keep up the good work Linus of the North
I too, like other comments I have seen, respect your tech opinion. I have one problem: I don't have the money to buy this stuff. Yes I still each anyway. On another note, when I bought my laptop (sorry not one you reviewed) I did not know it had beats audio. I knew beats were crap, but I ended up going to my local gas station and buying $20 iHome speakers and they were better than the beats audio that was in my laptop. As a warning to all out there: do not get beats audio, and don't get a HP laptop with them.
Will you be doing a portable speakers round up? Having done some very informal on the floor tests at Best Buy, I bought a JBL Flip sometime ago thinking they seemed to be a good price to performance portable.
Nice video linus, the speakers look nice, but like a lot of people here I wouldn't buy 'em. I might dish out 500 on speakers one day, but it will be something that's closer to profession speakers. I believe what I'm think of are studio monitors. Seen some nice ones on Guitar Center lol.
$500!? Sorry - no ball. You have to take the price into equation (which you did btw) - but the Bowers are also completely crap for their price, utterly crap. Your initial thoughts and comments were good in my opinion, something that you very much touched upon near the end of the review. They are small speakers -> So aimed at laptop users? If so - who would spend $500 for laptop speakers? If you want room speakers -> You wouldn't use them at all - maybe not even the ones you mentioned either. Desktop speakers -> Space CAN be an issue, but usually it isn't as much of a "big deal" On another note: I love you Linus - despite being bias sometimes. I especially love your LinusWifeTips on Facebook - they always make me laugh :D!
Could you do a review of the JBL portable speakers (they have two SKUs, but they both have the same drivers), those are the only non-room speakers I've listened to recently, and for $80, there isn't anything I'd rather have between them and a full Klipsch audio setup.
It's kinda funny, to watch this with 35 year old Speakers or better said a 35 year old Receiver which still sounds waaay better than most of the speakers I used before :D
After watching the series of speaker reviews (which were enjoyable), I am really surprised how confused (and confusing) the audio industry is. Audio comparisons are rooted the in qualitative analysis, "deep, rich, full, muddled" and the like, making all conclusions ripe for argument. The video industry by contrast has standardized terminology and clear quantitative benchmarking metrics. Can speakers only be analyzed by an oscilloscope in a soundproof room?
djphoenix901 yes I've got them. You can't really get any better 2.0 speakers/monitors for that price that's what I'd say. I have not tried a lot of other ones but they usually get either 9 or 10/10 from pretty much any user-review :)
for $500 i would have thought your original review would have been spot on , that's a lot of money and for that i really would be expecting excellent sound, simple
Well LinusTechTips I'm impressed by the fact that you know so many things even for the audio part ... i mean of course as you said you could have dumped away those simple audio speakers but you didnt .. instead you researched and reviewed other speakers before just judging ... well remember that when it comes to speakers headphones or even earphones, not many companies can overprice their products ... umm actually no ..beats by dr. dre but anyways there are many factors that would change the sound quality in speakers ... from design to the materials used and even how much space is given between the actual speaker and it's .. shell :P ... Anyways thanks for all the reviews and videos you and your team are doing an amazing job :D keep up
Linus I loved this review, and can't wait for the next one. Also, please review the Asus 27" ROG G-sync monitor soon well as soon as they send you one. Thank you for all the hard work.

I have so much respect for you Linus. You are the best unboxer, reviewer, previewer I have yet to enjoy. please keep up the great work!
Linus, can you review lower end speakers too? Mainly because the speakers you talk about are super expensive and I am poor. :(
The Micca and Lepai setup I mentioned is just around that. Whatever you do, please just don't buy those cheap Logitech speakers. They are highly distorted and have terrible midrange.
Those speakers look awful and the DT 880 is a lot better headphone than the DT 990 (Pro, I'm assuming). I'm sorry.

naycnay Definitely worth every penny! Most would end up liking a setup they have put together themselves much more as well
logitech's speakers sound like absolute arse in my opinion, the only decent thing in their sets are the subwoofers, but the satellites sound horrible.

Gadzookes, this is an excellent review! Great technical content, entertaining and funny too. Great job!
This how reviews should be. Honest. A real hands on feel. Pros and cons.
Can you do an unboxing for the Audio Technica portable speaker?
$230? Not worth the purchase-- you could purchase Studio Reference Studio monitors and a audio interface for that price. Forget this!
For same price you could buy small Genelec's with good quality DAC. Many sound studios use them.

You da man linus, speak up with those speakers.
It's kinda funny, to watch this with 35 year old Speakers or better said a 35 year old Receiver which still sounds waaay better than most of the speakers I used before :D
old school receivers have more power and quality than any new shit
Yup. I'm glad my father still had his one :D
I can't wait for the a5+ review
Do a review on a budget 15' notebook, like an Inspiron 15
After watching the series of speaker reviews (which were enjoyable), I am really surprised how confused (and confusing) the audio industry is. Audio comparisons are rooted the in qualitative analysis, "deep, rich, full, muddled" and the like, making all conclusions ripe for argument. The video industry by contrast has standardized terminology and clear quantitative benchmarking metrics. Can speakers only be analyzed by an oscilloscope in a soundproof room?
You should try out the M-Audio AV-40's. They cost around $99-119 and deliver really good sound!
Are they good? i'm thinking of getting them :)
djphoenix901 yes I've got them. You can't really get any better 2.0 speakers/monitors for that price that's what I'd say. I have not tried a lot of other ones but they usually get either 9 or 10/10 from pretty much any user-review :)
or you can like eat a donut they taste good
Jordan Johnson I'm eating donuts as I type.
Viin Rula
Mmm. Get your keys all sticky. Donuts.
Haha, great review! Nothing wrong, the speakers, I personally wouldn't buy them because of the price but they look good.
for $500 i would have thought your original review would have been spot on , that's a lot of money and for that i really would be expecting excellent sound, simple
Come on Linus you're awesome, man. No need to doubt yourself because of other's moronic comments.
Prepare yourself for this attack: you look great :D and you're great at what you do. keep up the great work
Screw what those jerk have to say, you reviews are awesome and your a pretty cool guy
Review the Creative Sound Blaster Roar!!! They sound really good for the price!!!
So if size isn't a factor, the A5+ is the best bet at this price point for music?
Working at somewhere like LinusTechTips or NCIX would be like my dream job!
Linus, Order some more stealth shirts. Also Do you use a sub with them?
Well LinusTechTips I'm impressed by the fact that you know so many things even for the audio part ... i mean of course as you said you could have dumped away those simple audio speakers but you didnt .. instead you researched and reviewed other speakers before just judging ... well remember that when it comes to speakers headphones or even earphones, not many companies can overprice their products ... umm actually no ..beats by dr. dre but anyways there are many factors that would change the sound quality in speakers ... from design to the materials used and even how much space is given between the actual speaker and it's .. shell :P ... Anyways thanks for all the reviews and videos you and your team are doing an amazing job :D keep up
Linus, you're awesome.
I love you Linus
how? 2h ago?
Toshan Bhujohory GOOD question. How exactly does one post a comment on a video two hours before video goes up?
fucking timetraveler
It's because I hacked Linus
Ignore the stupid comments Linus. I love your channel and your videos have provided me many hours of entertianment
What happened to the sound quality halfway through?
Obviously a cut from six months ago to now (check the hair). But you'd think he could have equalized it.
Then I kinda think the older mic sounds much better. Am I alone?
Linus should review some GX gaming sound systems
Linus I loved this review, and can't wait for the next one. Also, please review the Asus 27" ROG G-sync monitor soon well as soon as they send you one.
Thank you for all the hard work.
Did Linus not already make a video of the Asus G-sync?
weyderwarr Not of the 27" Asus ROG G-Synch 1440p monitor. However, I might be wrong please show me a link.
Thanks
