One thing that I really haven’t seen anyone talking about yet is the fact that Bonney’s transformation isn’t G5, especially from a character and story standpoint. G5 is the culmination of all of luffy’s mental and physical training from his journey, representing how far he’s come and granting him the total freedom that he strives for. He has NO CLUE who Nika or JoyBoy are. For all he knows, rubber can just do that. G5 is just another gear for him, hence the name. On the other hand, Bonney’s Nika transformation came about in a moment of hope amidst desperation, rather than physical battling or being on the brink of death. Bonney is literally 12 at this point, and her DF is quite literally only powerful because she herself still has child like wonder and hope for the future. She’s not using Gear 5, she’s mimicking the abilities of the god she most associates with freedom. From a writing standpoint, I’m honestly in love with bonney’s character arc so far. A tortured young girl who is unable to step in the sunlight, harnessing the powers of the sun god she looks up to achieve her own freedom. When you view Bonney’s Nika transformation and Luffy’s G5 from a narrative lens, it’s kind of clear that Oda didn’t intend Bonney’s transformation to replace or devalue G5. The only real reason I can see people calling it an ass pull is because of our perception of G5/Nika as an anime power up that has to be earned with raw force, when in universe its far more thematic.

I just recently finished reading OP and finding out that people in community are hating on Bonny getting Nika's freedom form baffles me. I, personally am really happy. He needs his companions (and I think this is what Joyboy lacked or was weak in this department) and I don't think I can ask for anythinng more than 2 Nika's on the same team. Tbh first time I felt that I wasn't fan of Oda making Bonney have this Power like Luffy, it feels like is that just easy to acquire that kind of power now.
